"Of course you're underprepared. You didn't think you'd be killing your employer, let alone your employer that has turned out to be a shapeshifter." He said, as if it were so obvious. "But, unfortunately, we don't have any more shapeshifters at our disposal. Just me. That's what happens when humans kill off your people." He said, only a hint of anger noticeable in his voice. The smaller man didn't notice Ques's protective glance, too busy thinking. Fable rolled his eyes at their ideas, "Sure, the real king might have a few enemies, but my father isn't the real king. He most likely murdered the guy in his sleep and enchanted the princes." He explained, as if it were nothing.

Fable turned around to look as well when Gideon stopped, tilting his head slightly. What is he doing..? He asked himself, scratching the back of his head in confusion. Is he.. talking to something..? He could hear faint words being said, but nothing completely clear to his eyes. He watched as the creature took something from Quesnel's hand and frowned slightly. What is going on...

Gideon let out a cold laugh, shaking his head. "What an inane conundrum I've gotten myself into." He hummed in thought. "Guess it's just us, then. Fantastic."

He leaned over when Fable noticed what Ques was doing. "He's a witch," he muttered under his breath, completely unbothered. "He swears he's not, but it's so obvious." He shrugged slightly. "Not too powerful though, just talking to animals and stuff. Can't make potions for shit, can't do hexes or spells."

Quesnel placed his hand on the ground, palm up, allowing the creature to scurry up his arm. The rat twisted around his forearm, perching on his shoulder, still grasping the trout jerky. He stood, careful to not let his new friend fall off, and turned, startling slightly. "Oh, sorry, I didn't realize..." he paused, rubbing the back of his neck. "Didn't, uh, realize you guys were waiting for me." He shook his head, glancing at the rat.

"This is Pinenut. He's going to help us get into the kingdom without attracting too much attention."

Gideon stared blankly at Quesnel, before busting out in laughter. "Pinenut?? What kind of name is Pinenut?" Quesnel gasped quietly, shielding the rat (who squeaked angrily at Gideon), before scowling at the red-headed man. "He's very sensitive about his name, be nice!" he hissed.

"Exactly." He agreed, nodding in Gideon's direction. "Ah.. of course. Just what I need. Being tied to a witch. Y'know, my kind hates witches? Bad history. He's lucky he's cute." He answered, his cheeks turning a light shade of pink. He crossed his arms, trying to act tough so the other man wouldn't notice how far gone he was for Ques.

His eyes widened as he saw the rat, "oh, how cute!" He cooed, running over to the little creature. He gave him a few head scratches, "Psst. I like the name Pinenut. Don't listen to Gideon, he's just jealous. My name's Fable." He whispered, holding a finger out for a paw shake. Of course, whatever the rat said he would understand. Since he was technically an animal. He looked up at Ques, eyebrow raised. "How come he all of a sudden appeared right when we need a guide, though?" He asked, slightly suspicious.

"Anyways, let's keep going."

Gideon swallowed back a snicker. He clicked his tongue, elbowing Fable in the arm jokingly. "Maybe that's why he likes ya so much, huh? Some sort of magical aura and whatnot," he said, wiggling his fingers. "Like, uh... that magnet stuff. Being drawn to one another or whatever." He frowned for a moment, gears very obviously turning in his head. "Ya know what, never mind. I can't remember where I was going with that."

Quesnel beamed down at Fable as he dashed over, cooing affectionately at Pinenut. The rat let out a dignified squeak, shoving the rest of his jerky into his mouth. He cleaned his whiskers off, before placing a tiny paw on Fable's outstretched finger. His nose twitched slightly and he quietly squeaked, seeming almost... bashful?

Thank you, he said politely, tilting his head up at Fable. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, good sir.

As Fable looked up at Ques with a raised eyebrow, the larger man gave a nervous chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. "I, uh... found him a couple of days ago. It was the night you and I met when it was all rainy... he was super cold and he came into the cave with Cerise and me..."

He paused for a moment, scratching at Pinenut's chest, thinking back to that day. Gods, it felt like it was forever ago, but was it only... two days? He glanced down at Fable, a strange glint in his eye. He swallowed a lump in his throat, before quickly planting a kiss on Fable's forehead. Standing straight again, as if nothing had happened, he side-stepped the man and walked over to Gideon, a grin on his face. "Yes, let's," he said, cooing softly at Pinenut as he let the rat crawl onto his hand and put him on Cerise's back. The little brown rat squeaked, clinging to the bear's fur.

Gideon grinned smugly at Quesnel, leaning towards him. The man rolled his eyes, pushing his face away.

"Oh dear, what a dignified rat." He said, having ignored Gideon's awkwardness, shaking Pinenut's paw. "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance as well." He answered, winking at the rat. "You're acting extremely suspicious, Ques. I don't like that." He said, glaring up at the taller man. He grumbled as the other leaned down to kiss his forehead, pushing him away. He turned to watch him leave, eyes narrowed. He didn't trust how Quesnel was acting, he had a bad feeling. But, although he knew he would probably regret it later, he pushed the feeling down and followed after the two men.

Soon they had arrived at the back of the castle, the stone patterns of the gray brick repeating over and over again. A cacophony of unnatural perfection. He moved through the brush, looking for secret passages, anything that would get them inside without being noticed would be appreciated. He looked back at the dumbasses he had brought with, "You gonna help? Or are you just gonna sit there and look dumb?" He asked, frowning at them before continuing his search for a loose stone that might conceal a switch or lever that would open a door. He mumbled under his breath as he worked, something about 'not being appreciated fpr everything he does'. Eventually he found one, pulling the large piece of rock out of the wall and reaching into the hole. He pulled the lever, letting a dusty, and obviously rarely used, door pop open.

Quesnel grimaced, still turned to Cerise. Was he being suspicious? He wasn't trying to be. He had nothing to hide. Except... he shoved the thought away. No, he wouldn't think about it. If he didn't think about it, it wouldn't be true. He shut off his mind as they walked, remaining strangely silent.

The large man brushed his fingers over the wall absentmindedly, not even glancing up as Fable said... something. He was too lost in his thoughts, which had crept in despite his desperate attempts to block them out. Cerise huffed in indignation at Fable's remark, however, and shoved her snout against his shoulder. Gideon also crossed his help, muttering something under his breath.

As the door scraped open, Quesnel was pulled from his overthinking, and his eyes widened. "Oh, good find!" He grinned at Fable, eyes glinting. He peered around the corner, scratching his arm nervously. "Sure is dark in there," he muttered, eyeing the dusty walls. Gideon snickered. "Sure would be useful to have a witch to conjure some light, wouldn't it?" Quesnel looked over his shoulder and narrowed his eyes at Gideon, who did nothing but shrug.

Quesnel shook his head, before looking back at the tunnel. "I think," he said, glancing at Cerise. "It's gonna be too big for you to join us, girl." Cerise huffed, slightly offended. Quesnel swallowed down a snicker. "I'm not saying it's fat," he whispered, before hushing her defiant rumbles. Pinenut squeaked from his perch, and Quesnel held a hand to him. The rat leaped off of Cerise's shoulder, scurrying up Quesnel's arm again and curling in the crook of his neck. He glanced down at his bare chest. "I should... probably wear something concealing."

Without waiting for a response, he reached into one of Cerise's packs, pulling out a dark cloak and slipping it over his head. Pinenut gave a disgruntled squeal, leaping over onto Fable, and crawling up to sit on his head.

Fable made a sound of acknowledgement, but otherwise he didn't answer the man. He chuckled softly when the rat jumped up on his head, reaching up to give him a few pets on his back. He stared into the dark of the doorway, lips quirking down into a frown. He shrugged and entered, disappearing into the dark. His eyes quickly adjusted to the pitch black hallway, due to his inhumanity. He pondered as he walked, Why didn't he tell me he was a witch? I mean, granted, he had no reason to, but it would have been nice to know I was falling for my kind's mortal enemy. How goddamn stupid am I? I should've felt it. Maybe I was ignoring it because he was cute? He growled slightly, crossing his arms.

And why is he acting so weird? Is he hiding something? Was Ques lying about liking me? Maybe this is a trap?? He felt panic start to rise in his gut before he squashed it. If this is a trap, then I can overpower them when it comes time. I'm stronger than the two of them. He reassured himself, but a little seed of doubt was growing in his stomach. It whispered to him how weak he was, and how when it came down to it, he wouldn't be able to attack the men even if this was a trap. He tried to ignore it, but he knew the voice was right. But maybe that wasn't such a bad thing? Not being able to kill them? They're his friends. For now.

Gideon glanced at Quesnel, who was still reluctantly peering into the darkness. The red-haired man's joking demeanor dropped as he frowned in concern, reaching up to pat Quesnel's back. "Gonna be alright, Ques?" he said in a low voice. Quesnel swallowed back what he was going to shake, instead fixing his friend with a grin and a nod. "Yeah, I'll be fine. I'm always fine."

Gideon narrowed his eyes but didn't press him any further. "After you, then," he said, motioning to the doorway. Quesnel turned, taking a deep breath, and strumbled into the dark, Gideon leaving a decent amount of room behind him. The large man's shoulders brushed against the tight walls, and the top of his head nearly scraped the ceiling. It was hard for him to breathe, but not because of the air, thick with dust.

He hated small spaces.

Wringing his hands together, his thoughts began to whirl, staring at the faint outline of the back of Fable's head. You're acting extremely suspicious, Ques. I don't like that. Fable's words rang loudly, repeating themselves over and over again. He had a complicated past, yes, but did that really warrant suspicion? I would be wary if I was in his shoes, he answered himself, a pang of sadness making itself known. Why did Fable seem so... distant all of a sudden? They had been joking around just hours earlier. Had Quesnel said something wrong?

Ever since he... found out I was a witch. he mentally kicked himself. He never told anyone he was a witch; why should he? He provided no help, other than the ability to talk to animals, and even then he could very rarely convince them to help. It was pure luck that he had encountered Pinenut, and that the little rat was indebted to him and Cerise.

Quesnel knew not many people liked witches, and with good reason. They weren't usually nice people. But I'm nice, right?

Are you? a tiny voice whispered in the back of his head, filling him with an overwhelming amount of doubt. Was he nice? Did everyone see him as nice, or just trying to be? Was he actually a huge douchebag? Quesnel had encountered people that tried too hard to appear nice, and very obviously hadn't had the best of intentions. Was he... one of those people? Did Fable think so?

Gideon didn't usually hang around "good" people. Is that... is that why he stuck around?

No, no, no, stop thinking about it, stop it. Focus on the task at hand.

But he couldn't help but worry about how Fable viewed him, and it made him sick to his stomach.

Fable coughed slightly, the dust trying to creep into his lungs. The more he tried to keep himself from coughing, the more he needed to. As soon as he felt like he was about to explode, he entered the dim light of some sort of dungeon. He let out a few coughs, bending over slightly and placing his hands on his knees. He took a few deep breaths after, finally able to stop coughing. He stood up straight again, looking around the dank and dimly lit area, frowning slightly. Some of the cells had people in them that were barely skin and bones, and others had only skeletons in them. A lot of the people had been dead for a long time, judging from the awful smell. He gagged, holding his nose so he couldnt smell. He walked up the stone stairs to the door, pushing it open and peeking into the brighter lit hallway.

He couldn't see any guards in the area, so he whispered down the stairway to the other men. "C'mon, its clear." He said, loud enough for the two to hear but quiet enough in case someone was listening they wouldn't be able to listen in. "We don't have much time.." He stepped out of the dungeon, glad to be out of that foul-smelling place. "Walk slowly. Keep close." He advised.

As Fable coughed, Pinenut jumped down onto his shoulder, sniffing worriedly at his ear. Once he had stood up straight again, the rat turned his attention to the room. He narrowed his beady eyes, nose twitching. Not good, not good feelings, he squeaked, curling his tail closer to his body.

Quesnel and Gideon emerged, the larger man letting out a quiet sigh of relief at the larger room, before nearly gagging as the putrid scent hit his nostrils. He covered his mouth and nose with one of his large hands, swallowing down the bile that rose in his throat at both the smell and the sight of the rotting corpses. He hurried after Fable, desperate to get out of this dreadful place. He leaned over Fable's shoulder, breathing in the fresh air deeply.

Gideon began to follow suit, but he paused, tilting his head slightly. Something felt... off. He glanced behind him and stared down the dungeon corridor. He saw...

Two pairs of eyes, glinting in the faint light. Staring at him. "Uh, guys?" he whispered loudly over his shoulder, his voice echoing. Quesnel looked behind him and frowned in concern. "What is it, Gid?" he whispered back, turning slightly. He tilted his head in curiosity as he spotted Gideon just standing there. Pinenut peered over as well, nose twitching. He let out a sudden squeak, leaping off of Fable's shoulder onto Quesnel's arm, scurrying down and across the floor to Gideon. He squeaked again, cautiously, scooting closer to the pair of eyes.
