[ Time Skip: Morning ]

Quesnel awoke to the scent of bacon and the quiet clinking of metal on metal. He blinked groggily, smacking his lips, and taking a deep breath. Glancing down at Fable, he smiled, his brain still all foggy. He noticed that Cerise wasn't laying with them anymore, but he was used to that; she was always the early riser. He ran his fingers through Fable's hair, leaning back again and just reveling in the peace, before realizing that Cerise couldn't cook. He turned his head slightly, careful to not wake Fable up, and peered out of the cave as much as he could.

Lo and behold, there was a man hunched over their firepit, cooking something. He had brown hair with tints of red that reached the middle of his neck, shaggy and unkempt. There was something about the way he sat that seemed so very familiar to Quesnel...

Slowly, he sat up, shifting Fable to the side and laying him on the bed, covering him up with the blanket. Brushing his curly hair out of his face, he gave him a gentle kiss on the forehead, before standing up and stretching, turning to the cave entrance.

He walked out, blinking in the sunlight, and once his eyes had adjusted, he noticed Cerise was sitting close to the man. She raised her head at the sight of him and nudged the stranger, letting out a huff of greeting. The man turned his face lit up. Quesnel felt his heart soar as he let out a gasp and ran over to the man, tackling him in a hug. His old friend stood up, almost falling backward as Quesnel hugged him, and let out a joyful laugh.

"Gideon!" Quesnel exclaimed, grabbing Gideon by the shoulders and pulling him away, grinning madly.

"Good to see you again, brother," Gideon said, grinning just as wide. "It's been forever since we've seen each other, yeah?" Quesnel laughed. "Forever isn't two years, but yes! It has!" He pulled Gideon into another hug, before pulling away again. "How are you? How's everyone back home?"

Gideon chuckled, sitting down on the rock, and Quesnel settled down beside him. "I'm doing fantastically, and so is everyone else. Aurelien was crowned king a couple of months back," he said, turning to his breakfast, which consisted of a couple of eggs and slices of what appeared to be deer meat. Quesnel reeled back in surprise. "King?! Aurelien, of all people?" Gideon laughed. "I know, it was surprising to me too, but Jubilee seems to think he'd be a good fit," he said, rolling his eyes. "Although, one can never trust a drunkard's judgment. I honestly don't know what Aurelien sees in that person." He sighed, shaking his head. Quesnel just shrugged, feeling, strangely, defensive. "He loves them, isn't that what's important?"

Gideon shrugged back, smiling. "Speaking of love," he started, raising an eyebrow at Quesnel. "Who's that lad in the cave?"

Quesnel could feel his face start to burn. "OH, uh, yeah, that's um, his name's Fable," he stuttered out, clearing his throat nervously. Gideon grinned mischievously. "Never took ya for a lover of the frail-lookin' kind, Ques," he said, slapping his back. Quesnel let out a nervous bark of laughter. If only he knew, Quesnel thought, thinking back to the two's first meeting and how terrified Quesnel had been.

Fable grumbled as Ques shifted him away, snuggling down deeper into the blanket. He continued to sleep until he heard laughter and talking, he grumbled and slowly pushed himself up. He was immediately awake when he saw the strange man, looking him up and down. Who's he callin' frail? He growled internally. He looked down at his wound, noticing it was almost completely healed. He shifted into his beast form, snarling slightly. He didn't perceive the man as a threat to Ques, considering he was conversing with him as if they were friends. Which was most likely, considering how friendly Quesnel was. He slowly moved in a circle, keeping his distance from the other man.

He made his way around until he was behind Ques, glaring at his friend. I'll show him frail..! He thought, dropping down and immediately pouncing in Gideon's direction. When they collided, he used his claws to grab onto the man's clothing, making sure he didn't get any skin. He pushed the man to the ground. "Frail, huh?" He asked, peering down at him as if he were staring right through his soul. "Think again." He growled, tail lashing as he retracted his claws.

Gideon laughed, poking at the fire. He sat for a moment, his face falling into a frown. "There's somethin' happenin' that I think you should know --" he started, before cutting himself off abruptly as he spotted Fable. "Ques, get down--!" He shouted, drawing a sword and standing. In the blink of an eye, Quesnel whipped around and saw Fable leaping forward. "Fable, no!" he yelped, reaching forward, but as always, he was too slow.

The beast pounced on Gideon, knocking him to the ground, and he gasped as the air was pushed from his lungs. He bared his teeth, about to swing his sword, when Quesnel called out again. "No, stop, Gideon!" The large man rushed forward, grabbing onto Fable's arm with one hand and wrapping his other arm around his waist. With a heave, he easily picked Fable up and slung him over his shoulder. "No attacking friends," he scolded, beads of terrified sweat rolling down his forehead. He turned and set Fable down, holding his arms out to separate him and Gideon.

Cerise sat and watched the whole thing with an amused expression on her face.

"What the hell is that thing?!" Gideon yelped, sitting up and scooting away. His normally chill exterior was shattered as his face twisted in terror. Quesnel hunched his shoulders, turning to grin sheepishly at his friend. "Um, yeah, uh... remember that guy? In the cave?"

Gideon stared incredulously at Quesnel before it visibly clicked in his mind. He let out a groan, rubbing his face. "Oh, gods, Ques, of course, you choose the shapeshifter," he mumbled. Quesnel furrowed his brows in confusion. "What do you mean?"

The other man uncovered his face and chuckled coldly, shaking his head. Sighing, he stood up and sheathed his sword. "I had really hoped it wouldn't be you," he said, wiping the dirt from his pants. Quesnel glanced back at Fable, before looking at Gideon again. "Just spit it out already, Gid, this isn't some sort of play where you can just be dramatic," he said, placing his hands on his hips. Gideon chuckled. "Well, you know how I'm an assassin, right?"

"...yeah? And?"

"The king of this land hired me to kill a beast-protecting monster-hunter," Gideon said, running his hand through his hair. "And that would be you."

He growled, wriggling around as Ques picked him up and pulled him away from Gideon. He shifted back once he was put back down, shaking himself off angrily and muttering insults under his breath. "He's not my friend." He spat, if he had been in his beast form his hackles would be raised.

"Oh, gods, Ques, of course, you choose the shapeshifter."

What is that supposed to mean?? He thought, hands clenching into fists. He already didn't like this man, and he had just met him. Who did he think he was? Coming here and deciding that he had any right to mess with him? Anger rose in his chest, as well as a beast's thirst for blood. If this man took one wrong step, he'd lose a limb. Even if Quesnel hated Fable for it. No one messes with this shapeshifter and leaves in one piece.

Wait a fucking second? What is he saying?? His eyes widened as he started acting strange, especially for a human. He laughed when Gideon said he was an assassin, "Well, not a very good one." He growled out, face contorting in anger. He felt the animal inside him begging to be released, to be used against this man. This man who was trying to threaten their lives, "Right, and what's the kings name?" He asked, taking a step forwards. Somewhere, deep down, he had a feeling that the king had not hired this man. But if it wasn't him, who could it be? He didn't know anybody else who would want him dead.

"And that would be you."

No... this can't be happening..

Quesnel put a hand on Fable's chest. He knew he wasn't strong enough to hold Fable back even if he wanted to, but he had to at least try, right? He swallowed a lump in his throat, staring at Gideon. "You're... you're not gonna--" he stuttered, stepping in front of Fable instinctively. The other man let out a cold laugh. "What, kill you? Of course not, you ninny!" He sighed heavily. "Honestly, Ques, you'd think we're strangers." He eyed Fable.

"That's rich coming from someone being hunted himself. Besides, you haven't seen me on the job," he said, lifting his chin in defiance. "And the king's name is Ezekiel Rannison since you so desperately need confirmation."

Quesnel tilted his head at Gideon, eyes narrowed sternly. Gideon sighed again (no doubt his chest was feeling heavy). "Alright, alright, I'll place nice," he said reluctantly, before glaring at Fable. "But if he lunges at me again, I won't hesitate to give him a couple of scars."

"Speaking of which, get into a couple of scuffles while I was gone?" he said, pointing to the jagged gash on Quesnel's face. He huffed in annoyance. "Quit trying to worm your way out of explaining what the hell is going on, Gideon," he said earnestly, and Gideon shrugged. "Fine. But you two will probably have to sit down for this," he said, taking his place at his rock. Quesnel glanced back at Fable, eyes worried. He bent down, grabbing Fable's arms.

"Please, I know how Gideon can get, but please don't take anything he says seriously," he whispered, looking Fable in the eyes. "He just tries to rile people up to get a reaction out of them, and the bigger of a reaction, the more he's gonna keep messing with you." He looked to the side, biting his lip. "If he starts to annoy you, just... put your hand on my hand or arm or knee, and I'll try to calm him down, alright?"

Everything Quesnel did meant nothing when Gideon said that name. He staggered backwards, face twisted in fear. No, no, no.. this cant be happening. He thought, a panic attack rising in him. Please, please, please let this be a dream. He felt as if he were going to be sick, his brain running over what that man had done to his mother. "You- That's impossible." He stuttered, backing into a tree. Everything was falling down around him, How did he find me? How did he find Ques??

He pushed Ques away, "GET AWAY FROM ME!" He screeched, his whole body going into panic mode. Why is he doing this? Why couldn't he just leave me alone!? He started hyperventilating, eyes trained on the messenger. "What have you done?? Coming here? How did he know?? How the fuck did he know I was here!?" He questioned, fear still coursing through his body. "Oh no, I cant be here. I need to leave. I cant." He muttered, pacing back and forth. He wanted to cry, he wanted to scream. He wanted to do anything but stay here and pace.

Gideon whipped his head around when Fable started screeching but said nothing. He turned back to his breakfast, leaving Quesnel to deal with his crazy companion. The large man stepped back from Fable, worry etched into his features. He wanted to wrap his arms around him and just hold him still until he calmed down, but he held back, shoulders hunched and arms out like a zombie. "F-Fable, it's okay," he said, waving his hands like he was trying to calm down a cornered predator. "We won't let the king hurt you, I swear."

Gideon scoffed, causing Quesnel to glance over his shoulder at him.

"I sell my services to the highest bidder. And the king just so happened to be the highest bidder," he said, poking the fire with a stick. A shower of embers shot up into the air, cascading down like shooting stars. "And he doesn't know you're here. I'm the one that found you."

At this, Quesnel let out a sigh of relief he didn't even know he was holding. He turned to Fable, smiling softly. Everything is alright, he thought as hard as he could, as if he could somehow project it into Fable's mind. He straightened his back and began fumbling with his hands as Fable started to pace. What do I do?

Gideon looked at Quesnel and tilted his head at him. "I'm a very good tracker, thanks to this one right here." He sighed, stabbing the stick into the ground. "To be honest, I was hoping the target I was given wasn't Quesnel," he said, clicking his tongue. "But who else has vitiligo and an uncanny ability to befriend beasts of all sorts, hm?" Gideon chuckled.

"So, what are you going to do now? Go to the king and tell him you couldn't find me?"

Gideon shook his head. "He's the resilient sort. If one fails, he'll just hire another to take their place. What we need to do," he said, standing up again and wiping his hands on his pants. "Is get you two out of here as soon as possible."

Quesnel took a step back, clenching his fists. "No, I'm not leaving until I take what is owed," he said stubbornly, crossing his arms. Gideon raised a brow. "And that would be...?"

"An herb, to heal Maman." His voice cracked ever so slightly. "One that the king lied to me about. I want the truth pried from his lips, and if I have to sneak into the kingdom and into his castle to get it, I will."

A cruel laugh flew from his lips, "of course he convinced you he was the king. That sly bastard." He growled, threading his fingers through his hair. "He's not a king, far from it. I'm sure he wishes he were. But of course he'd say that to trick you. Using his dream position as a cover." He explained, falling from his hair and crossing over his chest.

"If you think he doesnt know you're here right now, you're very much mistaken. That man, had you followed." He said, walking towards him slowly. "You just didnt know because they were in a different form than you would be looking for." He felt the being's eyes on him, piercing his skin. "He knows we're here. And he knows you're here. Which means as soon as he realizes you're not going to kill Ques, he'll be after you too. And he'll get you no matter how far you run." He said coldly, his face blank but a pain shining in his eyes. He was living through that realization right now.

He cracked his knuckles, "you wont have to tell him. I'm going to kill him." He answered, taking a deep breath and exhaling.

"Before you ask who he is, I'll tell you. That man, Ezekiel Rannison, is my father."

He spat the word out like it was dirty. And it was, he didnt deserve to bear that title. He deserved to burn for everything he had done to Fable's family and he wouldnt stop hunting him until he did. "And yeah, you could say he's... persistent. This is certainly not the first time he's sent someone to find me and exterminate the people around me. But no, we're not leaving until Ques gets the medicine."

Quesnel's head whipped around, staring in shock at Fable, his jaw slack. Gideon stared at him as well, eyes wide. The larger man waved his hands, shaking his head. "Wait, wait, wait," he said, mind reeling. "He's not the king? He's... he's your father?!" Gideon let out a cold laugh, kicking at the dirt. "What scum," he mumbled. "I knew I should've been prepaid." Quesnel couldn't help but agree.

He wanted to scream, to punch something. He had been fooled twice by the same man. How could he be so stupid? He took a shaky breath, his arms trembling as he forced them to his sides. Cerise lumbered over, brushing her side against him. He laughed abruptly. "Wow, this guy knows how to piss people off, huh?" He looked up at Fable, eyes ablaze with fury.

"Let's destroy this son of a bitch."

Cerise let out a bellow of joy, turning and bounding into the cave, gathering up their supplies. Gideon tilted his head at Fable, picking up his belongings. "You know more about Rannison, right? What else do we need to know about him?" He cursed himself under his breath, smacking himself in the head with his hand. "I knew he seemed suspicious, I knew it."
