Hunting scent trails discussion

Hunting scent trails discussion

I'm sure everyone has noticed the different colors of the various scent trails. I'm curious as to whether the color has any particular meaning. My theory is that color might relate to how difficult that particular hunt will be, or possibly relates to the type of prey you're chasing. It might relate in some way to hunter personality? Perhaps certain personality types are better or worse suited to certain game?

Has anyone noticed any correlation between scent trail color and anything? It might be worth recording scent trail types, color, location, wolf personalities, and hunt outcomes to see if we can find any correlation. Thoughts?

I thought it would be like different prey (ex: birding trail = pheasants, quails, critter trail = raccoons and rabbits, etc.)

Have you seen one labeled birding trail? I've only ever seen critter, small, and medium. I'd be excited to see birding though!!

I’m pretty sure the color matches the label of the hunting trail. Green is always critter trails, blue is small, purple is medium i think, and whatever the other color is is large.

And I don’t think that birding is a category, as far as I know birds can be caught on critter trails. I could be wrong though!

Birding was just an example

There is no birding category, there is just critter, small, medium and large trails - and each has its own unique colour that is always the same. The colour is just there to also easier see the difference in the scent trails. So it only relates to what kind of pray you're going after, but it has no relation to your hunters' personality or the outcome really. Other than the bigger the trail is, the harder the hunt will be.

Critter trail is usually just small birds, but the large trail can be things like elks and horses.

I think the colors represent how many uses of food a prey will have, if that makes sense!

This is what I noticed

Green = Critter trail / small animals with low amount of food uses

Blue = Small prey (max 4 uses)

Purple = Medium prey (max 8 uses)

Pink = Large prey (max 20 uses)

The color matches the size as others have said green will always be critter blue will always be small and so on

But what I've noticed is that the sent trails will be shaped differently

Example green = critter trail (sometimes it will be  horizontal like swishes and others vertical like swishes)

I believe the shape of the trail may determine what pray is at the end but I've yet to document it
