It depends. If you want the pup to have a job where certain stats are important, then you should train him/her in those stats.

Stalkers need wisdom and smarts
Chasers need speed and agility
Finishers need strength
Leads need strength and agility (for battling)
Scouts need strength and wisdom (for the most difficult biomes)
Herbalists don't need any specific stats, but in the future, they will need wisdom and smarts
Pupsitters also don't need specific stats, but they should have good numbers across the board if you plan to use them as tutors also.
