Loss of a pack

It all started one evening as a soft growl that then erupted into a harsh roar. Sheets of snow rushed down the mountain sides and headed towards the pack below. Alarmed, several heads rose to face the deafening sound. Immediately afterwards, Alpha called out for the pack to flee but he couldn't be heard. The arctic wolf then resorted to nudging wolves to follow and help get the pups away. The roaring grew louder and louder until you couldn't hear anything but the rumbling snow. Everything went by so quickly.. Too quickly.. The last think Alpha saw was his pack being consumed by the snow..

...

...

...

Alpine gasped for air as she clawed away out from under the snow. It was a good thing that she has managed to run pretty far until the snow enveloped her.. Shaking the snow from her pelt, the snow wolf looked around.. All she could see was the glimmering, pure white snow that seemed to grimace in amusement.. Her pack.. Her pack! What had happened to them?! Whimpering softly, Alpine padded towards the direction of the dens, also the last place she saw her friends and family..

It was much worse than she has imagined.. Everything was buried in the snow and the dens that had once housed her pack mates had collapsed at the weight of the snow. Lifting her head up to take in the scents, Alpine attempted to catch the scent of her pack mates but she couldn't smell anything. The snow had covered up the scent and it was too deep to walk around without the snow dragging her under. The she-wolf paced around, now trying to find anything that would suggest her pack mate being around.. The only clues she could find was a few tufts of fur that laid on the snowy ground.

No one was there. No one else had survived.. Alpine stayed in the middle of the pack grounds, solemn. Night fall was starting to arrive but she had no intention of leaving. This was her home. Well, it was, now it was nothing more but a cold grave. The she-wolf curled up in a ball to reserve body heat and kept an eye out, now waiting till dawn.

The light of dawn and the soft singing of the birds greeted Alpine as she raised her head and shakily stood up. Hunger pricked her stomach but grief held back most of the pain. The she-wolf shook off her pelt and looked around- The warmth of the sun had melted away some of the snow but despite that, she still couldn't see any signs of life. Alpine trudged through the snow over to a bird that had fallen out of it's tree and froze to death before quietly taking a few bites out of it. She didn't feel hungry but she knew she needed energy for what she was about to do next.

The snow-wolf discarded the remains and padded over to the collapsed dens before starting to dig. Even if her pack mates where dead, they deserved a proper burial. One by one, Alpine slowly dug out her pack mates before digging out a huge pit. The ground was frozen and her paws burned but that didn't stop her from trying. Eventually, the she-wolf had dug up almost every single wolf in the area and buried them under the ground. She didn't want their bodies to stay above ground when the snow melted and she definitely didn't want anything to mess with the bodies.. Now finished with her task, Alpine left a few flowers over the grave and left with a long, mournful howl.

The she-wolf limped into the foliage of the forest, now out of the mountains. Her paws where sore and the feeling of exhaustion and hunger hit her like a boulder.. Or an ava- Alpine made a temporary den under a log and curled up in the den, letting her exhaustion take over. The last thing she saw before falling asleep was the first few flakes of a light snowfall.

Finding a friend

Opening her eyes, the she-wolf lifted her head, yawning. The sun was barely up and a few birds where singing to greet the morning. Silent, Alpine crawled out from under the temporary den, her paws stinging. Flinching slightly, the arctic wolf padded around, stretching. Despite her aching muscles and sore paws, Alpine had enough energy to last her for a while.. Hunger pricked her stomach.. Lifting her head up, Alpine took in the frigid air and caught a whiff of pheasant. The she-wolf quickly navigated towards the bird but quickly stopped a few meters away and went down into a hunting position. Eyes narrowed in a focused manner, Alpine slunk closer- Suddenly the pheasant looked up as if alarmed. The she-wolf froze as well but did not keep her eyes off the bird. She took in another breath to taste the air- The pheasant couldn't have sensed her, right? ... She was correct- The scent of another wolf was nearby.. Hopefully they weren't that close- Alpine slunk closer before leaping onto the pheasant- In a flurry of panicked brown feathers, the bird immediately fled the scene. The she-wolf let out an annoyed sigh before testing the air again- The wolf seemed to have moved closer.. Nervous, Alpine looked around.
It didn't take long for her to spot tufts of dark gray fur sticking out from the snow.
"Who are you?"
The wolf inquired, looking up at Alpine in a curious manner- His ears where pricked forward but his tail bristled slightly as if nervous.
"I could ask you the same question."
The she-wolf snapped back, not exactly in the mood to talk to someone who might've caused her prey to flee..
"I was only asking a question, you didn't have to go all hostile on me.."
The stranger responded, a slight whiny tone in his voice. The arctic wolf snorted softly, her tail flicking to the side slightly.
"Fine, the name's Alpine and remember it well."

Alpine looked up at the sky after catching a brief whiff of what seemed to be 'cold'..

"We should probably find shelter soon, seems like a snowstorm is approaching."

The stranger nodded as Alpine motioned for him to follow. For some strange reason he followed behind, no questions asked. The arctic wolf quickly navigated to an abandoned coyote den and ushered the stranger in, not exactly thinking about it too much. Alpine laid down at the back of the den and looked over to the stranger, her yellow eyes observing his movements..

"Thanks but you didn't have to get me here. I could've easily found a place."

Alpine raised an eye in a skeptical manner before looking outside- White flakes of snow had begun to fall and the wind was strting to pick up.

"I know you could've but why did you decide to follow?"

The stranger only gave a sheepish expression-

"Er- Well.. Uh.. I.. Um.."

The she-wolf chuckled lightly in amusement as he struggled to find words.

"Anyways, I never caught your name."

"It's Shard. Just Shard."

In search of a home

The pair trotted side by side, the snow underneath their paws crunching at the weight. It's already been a few days after the two had met and they grew close- Not in that way- They're just really good friends.

"Honestly I feel like a foresty area would be great to set up a pack."

Shard chimed as the two continued. Alpine shook her head, her yellow eyes keeping an eye on the path forward.

"A forest sounds nice but so does a cold area. Like the mountains or maybe the tundra."

"Right, right."

The two stopped walking and looked around- Alpine brought her head up to taste the air.

"There's a herd of elk around here."

She stated before turning to Shard.

"Wanna go try to catch one or should we continue?"

Shard seemed to think for a minute before responding.

"Hunting sounds like a good idea. We've been walking for the past few days now without much of a break so taking a break now might help."

Alpine nodded.. And with that, the pair went forth to hunt.

The hunt was a success and Shard was the one to bring it down! The pair happily ate in silence before taking a small break and leaving the carcass for other organisms to feast on.. Shard and Alpine continued, quiet. A cool breeze blew by and Alpine seem to relax a bit, comforted by the cold. Eventually the pair found it. A place that seem to match both of their preferences, the Taiga. It was cold, and Alpine loved it. There was a thin layer of snow on the ground as well as the trees. There seemed to be a lake nearby as well by the looks of it.. Satisfied with the area, the pair settled down in a spot between the clearing by the Tundra and the huge lake before starting to set up the area. While Alpine helped build the dens, Shard went out to look for food. Things where great.

Dang this is shorter than usual-
