Stories of the Mighty Oak Pack

Stories of the Mighty Oak Pack

I've decided I want to write a series of stories for my pack, at least one story for each wolf as the POV character. This will likely be an endeavor, but I'm nonetheless excited about it.

Each story will be its own post in the thread, and they will be chronological, since I hate going out of order. This is as much for my own archiving/remembering my own wolves as it is for others to read.

Signs

POV Character: Jones

First Fortnight of Winter, Year 6

Jones had been noticing it, and he was sure his pack had too. Ever since the strange encounters with anomalies and such seemingly caused by Bronagh, he had noticed subtle changes in his wolves. Though the angered mother spirit had been pacified several months ago by now, it seemed that magic still lingered in his pack.
At first, the magics were subtle, but seemingly stronger in younger wolves. He suspected that maybe their births being nearer to the blurring of the barrier between worlds may have something to do with it, though the powers lingered, and seemed to grow stronger, in pups born after the affair in the caves.
"Perhaps the veil between worlds will forever be permeable from now on," he thought to himself.
And on the topic of strong magic, he was especially worried about Device. Device was his great-great-grandpup, and, at only a month old, had been gaining strength in magical powers at a frightening rate. The poor thing was only barely learning to control misel limbs, much less bursts of magic. It was unpredictable, but nothing to blame the pup for. Still, it was somewhat worrying. Just the other day, Device had howled for the first time. Normally, a pup's first howl was a joyous occasion, but when to howled, to had caused a great chill in the nursery cave, frost leaking from misel jaws, causing misel littermates to shiver vigorously, snuggling up closer to their papa.
As the firstborn pup of the litter, Device would one day inherit Jones's place as pack leader, though only after several other generations of succession before to. Still, that, combined with the unpredictable nature of Device's power, was cause for concern, not only for the safety of the other pups, but also that of Device mistletoeself.
The thought of any wolf in his pack coming to great harm was one that Jones could not stand. If only he had maintained contact with the wolves of the Chaorainn Pack, they seemed to have greater knowledge on arcane matters than his own pack. But maybe his herbalist would know.

Jones trotted towards the herbalist's cave, to be greeted by Adrik. "Oh, Jones! Are you feeling ill?"
"No, not quite. I have a question, though."
"Then, what is it?"
"...I'm worried about Device. To's showing signs of magical powers, but more strongly than any I've seen. Do you know of a way to help the young pup control misel powers?"
"I truly haven't seen magic in our realm prior to the arrival of the wisps. Though, that's not to say there isn't a way to teach young pups to direct their powers. After all, we have taught them to direct their teeth and claws for generations."
"So you're saying... this is like teething?" Jones tilted his head to the side and rose his tail hopefully.
"Well, I'm only saying it is a possibility. It's worth a try, right?" Adrik wagged the tip of his tail stiffly, a nervous smile on his face.
Adrik began working with his herbs, with a knowledge that Jones had always admired. This wolf had truly saved the pack, coming to them when their old herbalist had passed with nobody trained to succeed her, and Jones was eternally grateful.
Jones was pulled from his thoughts when Adrik nudged the bundle towards his nose.
"Take this bundle, Jones. These herbs are for calming and centering, and may help Device's magic teethe."
"Thank you, Adrik."

Entering the nursery cave, Jones headed straight for where Flint lay with his litter. He gently placed the bundle in front of his packmate, causing them to look up at him.
"This is for Device. Adrik said that the herbs may help to focus misel magic."
"Oh thank goodness. Just an hour ago, to sent a thundershock through my body while nursing, and judging from the yelps of misel littermates, it spread to them as well."
"It only might help, I cannot guarantee-"
"I know. And if it doesn't, I will search for something myself," Flint interrupted.
