🌗 Cartico Pack - Lore Thread

This is purely a thread for me to record my own wolf lore as I like- it likely won't be particularly organized but maybe I'll make it fancy later

Please no commenting ; - ; however im always happy to chat via dm's

for now I'll just dump the current lore I already have written

Vetrius doesn't remember who she was, or supposed to be. Her first memory is waking up in a hushed forest, starlight peeking through branches. There was a stranger standing next to her, almost as if keeping watch, waiting for her to awaken. Their fur seemed spotted with the same stars in her eyes.

Her and Oryn bonded immediately, soulmates in definition. They began to wander together, Vetrius searching for some sort of purpose. As the dreamlands opened it seemed she found one, her and Oryn both beginning to study the night sky with the aid of both logic and magic.

Wolves joined them during their nomadic movements, some staying and some going. With the aid of carefully constructed wheeled carts the pack was able to move from territory territory with a bit more ease.

Vetrius was getting close to unlocking....something. What, she wasn't sure, but she could feel the tense vibrating energy of something. She could feel it deep in her bones, and it made her actions shivery with anticipation as her and the pack prepared the latest ritual.

Though the dreamlands opened on their own once in a while, Vetrius was positive she could find a way to open the portal willingly on her own as well. As the ritual preparations finished they laid in a circle, closing their eyes to enter a meditative state. Oryn cast her a nervous look, his fur bristled with anticipation as well...but unlike his mate he could sense the dark edge of something sinister lurking as well. But they had never run into any serious issues before, so it should be fine.

As the participating pack members began their meditation everything fell into silence. Oryn opened his eyes without opening his eyes, finding himself standing on a large expanse of reflective water. He could hear the distant voice of Vetrius, talking to someone. Before he could try and find her in the astral though he was wracked with a burning pain. He yelped in pain, collapsing in the shallow water as he writhed around.

As quickly as it started blackness took his vision, and before he knew it he was awakening to the fearful shouts of his pack mates. Vetrius looked at him with wide shocked eyes as he opened his own in the waking world once more. "Oryn I'm sorry...I - I didn't know this was what the deal meant...."

His answered his own question when he tried to stand, and realized that his body now sported some new feathery sprouts. Looking back up at his mate he noticed her eyes were glowing now as well, and they both radiated a heavy magical aura.

He took a deep breath to steady himself before offering her a comforting smile. "Well, let's figure out what you've done." They could deal with this together, as they always have.

Kori (next stud / beta) joins the pack

The heat of the desert cast everything in mirage- it made it difficult to even look around without making Athelia's eyes water.

Fortunately, she knew her way through this area pretty well, so it wasn't too much trouble to look at her paws as she walked. She kept her nose and ears peeled- the smell of dust, the coppery tang of a snake's venom (a quick few steps left to avoid the rattlesnake nest), the tumble of a weed nearby. The faint whining breaths of an injured wolf- wait...

She froze in her tracks- head snapping up as she quickly scanned around her. There was nothing that she could see- but now the weak smell of a stranger had also drifted to her in the still air. There was a wolf nearby, and whoever it was didn't sound good.

There was a large boulder a few feet away, since she couldn't see anything she had a feeling whoever it was may have collapsed in the small sliver of shade the rock could offer.

Sure enough- as she approached and circled it the sound of breathing and the smell of sickly wolf grew stronger. Still- a shock ran through her turning her blood cold when she saw how small the wolf was. They couldn't be much more than an adolescent! It was a ruddy colored wolf- laying on their side with jaws parted in an unhealthy sounding pant.

They seemed to be passed out- the reasoning could have been anything in the desert. They didn't so much as mumble or wag a tail as Athelia rushed over and began to hurriedly lift them onto her back. They felt like nothing to her- already a large wolf and being so withered away the other wolf felt as if they weighed no more than a feather.

She traveled as quickly as she could from the desert, more than relieved when the air began to cool on her fur as they passed through the prairie and neared the forest line of the mountains where her pack was currently settled.

The moment she arrived she called for Nepenthe- her half sister but more importantly the pack's herbalist. Nep emerged from her den with a nonplussed look, but once she saw Athelia and the stranger a look of surprise flashed across her face before settling into neutral determination. "Quickly- bring them in."

The stranger was laid in a soft nest in the herbalist's den. "Go tell Vetrius- I can handle this from here." As Athelia left to inform their pack leader Nep hurried to work gathering flasks of water to carefully hydrate the stranger.

It was strange- it seemed as if they had been unconscious for quite a longer time. But there would be no way they could have survived in a coma in the desert for as long as Nep suspected they'd been in said coma. Their fur burned to the touch and as they gained a bit of strength from the water they would occasionally shudder violently.

Nep sighed- this would not be easy. This wolf was dehydrated, malnourished, and who knows what else. It was impossible to tell what had happened to them- Nep's best guess was that they grew ill while traveling somewhere and collapsed in the desert...but that didn't explain why they were alone- or why no one else had come to find them, presumably their original pack.
The dreamlands was quiet- it was usually during the in betweens of the lunar openings. Not many wolves could access this place on their own- but Oryn was not just any wolf.

He soared above the ground with raven feathered wings- enjoying the calm of flying. It was much harder to fly in the waking world- a funny fact he liked to ponder often...the lines between real and fantasy. Vetrius was studying with a cnitharian friend the subject of sigils- so he was planning on visiting the trader couple. They always had fun gossip to share if not items at least.

Swooping down he landed with a practiced ease, padding towards the trader's hut. He could hear voices inside- theirs and an unfamiliar one. Uncommon but not unheard of- they did sometimes have visitors when Oryn came.

He knocked and was called in, but froze in shock as he looked at their visitor. It was a ruddy wolf with glowing blue eyes, clearly a bit younger. They seemed to be a cnitharian if the tendrils starting to grow from their body were any evidence but...they looked exactly like the wolf Athelia had found one moon ago!

It had been almost a full lunar cycle yet their stranger still lay comatose- but alive- in the herbalist's den. Thanks to Nep's expert work they were far from the brink of death now- but still in an odd fever coma nonetheless.

"Who are you ?!" His voice must have come out a bit more aggressive than he intended because both the traders rose from their seats with concerned looks at him. "No, no, I'm sorry it's just...." he looked at the ruddy wolf "You've been comatose in my pack for almost a month now!"

The other looked just as surprised. "I am?" They patted themself as if to check that they were real. "Well...this sort of explains a lot actually...."

The traders look between the two- "perhaps you should step outside and get to know each other?" one offers diplomatically- Oryn nods and the other wolf follows him out a bit more timidly. That's understandable- Oryn is a stoic wolf with wings afterall.

"So, who are you?"
"My name is Kori- from the Red Ridge pack." Her voice was gruff- but soft and pleasant to listen to.
"I see...you have to know that you're in the dreamlands, what is the last thing you remember when you were awake?"

There was a long pause..."I know I'm in the dreamlands...but I didn't realize it was still in my sleep. With all the fae stuff going on I guess at the time I figured I had just been snatched through a portal- some other missing pup to talk about." She looked at the ground before speaking again.
"The last thing I remember is me and my brother, we wanted to go out night hunting, just us two. You know...kid stuff. We got carried away, we had wandered way too far. Something attacked us, a boar or a cougar I honestly couldn't tell you. My brother ran one way and I ran the other.

It didn't chase me but I was so terrified, I was barely an adolescent at the time, I ran until my paws gave out. I finally collapsed in a cave I came by. When I woke up- I felt sick- I tried to find my way back to my pack but I ended up in the desert. And I could tell I was growing more ill.

I can't remember much more after that- just sort of struggling my way through the desert..."

"I see. This does explain a lot- but it also brings up a lot more questions. Like, how do we wake you up..."

After the meeting in the dreamlands Oryn and Kori regularly met up . In the waking world- Kori was still stuck in her coma- but in the dreamlands Oryn got to work teaching Kori. The ways of the pack, wolves in general, and most importantly their way of the moon.

Kori unsurprisingly took to magic with ease, and her personality flourished as she became more confident.

In the waking world something had begun to happen- though Kori had remained in her fever dream her body had begun to change. Reflecting the dreamworlds she had begun to grow tendrils, and her fur began to develop odd glowing patterns. Nep recorded the changes with interest.

and im too lazy to continue so thats all for now folks

Vetrius finally tells Oryn of the details of their curse...though he's aged her fur has grayed while his remains sleek and shiny. There's no avoiding it- he will live much longer than she will.

He isn't sure how to process this news..it felt like they'd have together forever. They nestle close to each other for comfort, trying to grapple with the reality of life.

Though it's hard to confront- Oryn promises to watch over the pack one day, once she passes of old age... He will make sure to pass down the knowledge theyd gained.

Vetrius smiled weakly up at Oryn, gray fur flecking her muzzle and eyes crinkling in the corners. She had successfully had her last litter, and Oryn looked on with conflicted feelings of sadness and joy.

"This is the one." She cooed, nudging one of their newborn pups. In all their years- this was the first one they'd had that shared either of their fur. Just like her father's...
"How can you tell already?" Vetrius chuckled softly, looking up at him.
"You should know by now, sometimes I just know these things."

He nestled up against her- spreading a wing over her and the pups. They snuggled against him with soft whimpering squeaks. Despite being the same age- Oryn's fur still shone with the sleekness of youth, even as Vetrius acknowledged her coming sundown days. He resisted the urge to open his mouth to point out the unfairness of it. It was time for him to accept what was coming...

Vetrius was going to die, the magic in her too unstable- too powerful. On the other hand...Oryn, he was going to live...quite possibly forever. And this pup, this would be their next lead. And it would be up to him to help guide her once Vetrius passed...

He glanced over to her, she was studying the pups with a soft smile on her face. He wanted to ask her...ask her if their pups also carried their magic. What would it mean for the future lead? But he held his tongue. His mate might seem all knowing, but even he knew not all things can be seen.

Instead, he heaved a sigh, and laid his head over Vetrius' back. The two slowly drifted into a soft warm sleep, tiny bodies snoring against them.

It was later now- Oryn watching the pups while Vet stretched her legs, got a drink of water from the stream.
Her ear twitched, and she paused to turn to the side. She stared into the dark of the forest. After a few seconds, a dark figure emerged like a shadow. It was a large cat, fluffy black fur and piercing green eyes.
"My friend! What brings you here?" Vetrius greeted the cat- Blake, with a soft headbump.

"You know what brings me here, Vetrius. I owe you a life debt, and you are growing old...I fear I will not be able to repay my debt in your lifetime." Vetrius seemed shocked. "What do you mean?"

"I've been keeping tabs, lurking- as my kind do- and I've overheard that you had one last litter coming, and that you would pick a heir from that litter. So I have come- to pledge myself to you and your pack.
Please, allow me to join your pack, and keep watch over your heir."

Vetrius seemed speechless for a few moments. "What-? Of course but, are you sure?"

"Of course, I've been on this earth longer than you have even, and I may be here longer than Oryn is as well...I've been around, and my life has grown boring. And to be honest, lonely. My existence has lost its purpose, I can't even remember if I had one to begin with. So please, allow me this burden, and know to me it will mean so much more. I mean this in a good way, not to be misunderstood."

The cat was not one for many words, so Vetrius knew this was serious. "Okay, I accept your loyalty. Join my pack, and become the companion to my heir."

"Offer me your paw." Always one to rush headfirst into a magical deal, Vetrius didn't even hesitate with her trust. She winced but didn't flinch away as Blake used a sharp claw to quickly slice the pad of her paw.
The cat did the same to their own paw- and then took Vetrius' in her paw. Their blood mingled- Vetrius felt her body tingling with magic.

"We are kin now, and by proxy so is your heir. I will be bound to you by blood, so you may go into the night easy, knowing my code will not allow me to break the rules." Vetrius felt her eyes well up with tears and emotion as the gravity of the situation sunk in.

"...Thank you, Blake....Please, when I pass on to my resting place, keep my family safe."
She would escort Blake back to Oryn now, tell him the situation...or most of it at least. Then they'd introduce the pack...this might be a little bumpy- but nothing that couldnt be smoothed over.
