Ad: The Wandering Circus is the most famous troupe in the world, performing magical shows wherever they travel... and stealing anything they can get their hands on. Performers by day and thieves by night, they've never been caught, and no one knows of their dual nature, except, as it turns out, one individual - who's hired them to perform the largest heist they've ever attempted.

World:

Duesfer

(will insert a map here so everything makes more sense) Duesfer is a large continent, about the size as Asia, Africa, and Europe combined - thanks to this size, the land has a vibrant sea of diverse peoples, cultures, and terrain. The southern parts of the continent resemble the land and demographic of South America, and African-like and Indigenous-like people inhabit the east and west of the center-continent respectively. The north has a European flair, with paler skin and a history with Viking-like traditions; the north also has a vast ocean of islands. Between the equator and north is a culture and people similar to that of the Middle East, and the west is inhabited by Asian-like people with similar traditions. People resembling Polynesians are scattered across islands off the west coast. When making your character, please be mindful of these areas, and while they are similar to our modern world, as this isn't Earth, they aren't completely the same, so allow yourselves some creative freedom in moderation. The world has just entered the "steel age" and the first models of "cars", or automobiles are being made and sold to those that can afford them. This world is quite steam-punk-ish, and while it's not very modern, isn't medieval. Almost everything is powered by steam and gas. The currency in this world is known as luege, which takes the form of small copper coins and are worth about 50 cents, so something that would cost two dollars would be four lueges. (once there's a map, we can go a little more into detail about the world) *Note that although Duesfer is steampunk, it retains some semblance of realism. There just happens to be a bit more focus on the creative and mechanical aspect of the world. Consider the style of the world, or a font.

City:

- Dunster -

The city of Dunster is one of the largest cities in the world, and is one of the most culturally diverse places on the continent, being the epicenter of trade nestled on the border of the northwest and east above the equator. Hundreds of people from all over the continent live and work here. It's a bit of a tiny mock-up of the continent itself - the north of the city has the most northern people and culture, the northwest the most Asian-inspired culture, northeast the middle eastern based, and the southern parts have the African, Native American, and South American flairs. As you could imagine, the poorer parts of Dunster, also known as the slums, aren't very pretty; they're filled with trash and sewage, but these parts are luckily quite small. The city itself is a maze of buildings, cobblestone roads, and steam, and while some might see it as gloomy and cold, others see it as beautiful and full of energy. The buildings are built compactly next to each other, and there's little room for "gardens" or greenery, outside of parks and the properties of the rich.

Performance:

- The Wandering Circus -

The Circus is the renowned across the world. They've traveled the continent a hundred times over for many, many generations, and never once has their act been dull or repetitive. They may perform the same story a few times over, but no matter how many times the people see it, they are always entranced by their ability to tell an entire story and convey so many emotions with just the movement of their body... and of course, the simply exhilarating stunts that can seem inhuman at times. While it is unknown to the public how the circus always finds new performers when the old ones can no longer perform or die, it's quite a simple process. Wherever there's a large amount people, there are thieves, pickpockets, and beggars. The performers are always told to keep an eye out for these sneaky little children, and often approach the ones that don't get caught with an offer. 'Work for us and never starve or sleep on cold hard dirt again'. Sometimes even a rebellious child from one of the more privileged families gets caught up in this, searching for an adventure

Heist:

- Aether -

Usually, The Wandering Circus plans numerous small thefts that require one or two members at most. Maybe one of the performers has a grudge against someone who lives in the city they're performing in, or sometimes it's a challenge by others of the troupe for a bit of fun; members could return with a scarf, an antique painting worth hundreds of lueges, or perhaps more. As the circus is quite successful, their need for extra currency is relatively unneeded, but certainly enhances their performance. Because they usually partake in minor crimes, this one is quite out of the ordinary... The leader of the crew (who doesn't necessarily have to be the mastermind) has been receiving information from an anonymous source that is promising such a prize, that all the circus performers could live a life of comfort and privilege till they die, if they can successfully steal this Aether and hand it over to the person who has hired them. Currently, all they know is that the Aether is somewhere in Dunster, and are waiting for the next bit of information from this nameless, faceless person. And, what is this odd, so important Aether? They're not quite sure...

Roles:

A quick explanation- there are twelve character slots, but fourteen different types of characters. That's because this isn't a circus vs. a gang of thieves. The circus acts are the thieves, and so, in the sign-ups, there will be two role slots, one will be one of the available circus acts, and the other an available criminal role.
As an example, your character can be the Ringmaster and one of the Thieves, or an Acrobat and one of the Sharpshooters. No circus or criminal role needs to really have anything to do with the other.

____

Circus Roles:

Ringmaster
The Ringmaster, sometimes known as Ringmistress or Ringleader, is a critical part in any circus. While they don't have a specific act, without them guiding the audience through all the performances, the show would be quite confusing. They are also there to 'hype' up the acts, making them seem much more spectacular and dangerous than they might be. This character is most likely very charismatic, able to tell tales and entrance the audience with only a few small words. They are the true voice of the circus. This character is usually dressed up in fancy, eye-catching clothes that always make their presence known, at least during the circus... who knows what they do outside of this spectacular show...

Acrobats
The acrobats are the true wonders of the troupe. They can perform extraordinary human feats of balance, agility, and coordination. Some say they are the body of the show, and that without these talented people, there would be nothing holding the circus together. Their talents can vary from the many forms of trapeze to aerial silks and hoops to dancing and gymnastics. They can perform single, couple, and group acts, and as stated before, are very well balanced, strong, and flexible. They most likely wear flowing or skin-tight clothes when performing. Though, whether they're so elegant in real life is still up for debate.

Contortionist
The Contortionist is similar to the acrobats, but this is more of a one-man act that doesn't include any climbing or flying. They are incredibly flexible with the ability to almost tie their own bodies into a knot... or multiple knots. The crowd is awed by this incredibly flexible person as they move through ever more difficult poses that are impossible for the normal human. Like the acrobats, they wear colorful skin-tight or flowing garments during the show.

Clowns
Clowns are the heart and soul of any circus, and while they aren't the most adventurous acts or even very anticipated acts, are vital. They give the crowd a comedic break from the tense and dangerous shows of the other performers and can bring almost everyone to laugh with their playful antics. They can be quite acrobatic in their performances, despite their goofy appearance, being able to ride unicycles, juggle, and tumble, even if they appear to make themselves fail for the sake of humor. While some opt for that more traditional role, some choose to venture onto comedic monologuing instead, or something similar to stand-up - it's a personal choice, and often clowns adapt to the story on a show-by-show basis.
They are usually colorfully dressed in oversized clothes and heaps of makeup, which some people think is quite creepy. Whether the clowns are truly monsters in disguise, we'll never know.

Knife Thrower
The Knife Thrower holds one of the tensest acts in the circus... and most interactive with the crowd. They can do many different performances and throw many more things than just knives, though this is what they are known for. Sometimes there are multiple targets that the knife thrower must hit blindfolded, or with a fork, but usually, they pick a 'volunteer' from the crowd and strap them to a spinning wheel, and if they're feeling rather generous, give the volunteer an apple to bite on. Next, the wheel starts spinning and the tension begins.
There is no set 'costume' for the knife thrower, but it's definitely not casual wear.

Tightrope Walker
Another form of single act acrobatics, the tightrope walker is a person with incredible balance and core strength. They are known to perform on tightropes suspended high above the ground, where if one were to fall... well, it wouldn't be pleasant. They can do all manner of things on the rope, from dancing to tricks without ever accidentally losing their footing.
They usually wear the skin-tight clothes that are typical of acrobats.

Fire Dancer
This dancer is trained, as one might assume, to handle fire. Performances range from elaborate ballet-type numbers, tricks and feats of incredible risk, swinging fire and bodies through the air, or even tightrope work. Those who work with fire are versatile; usually they are part of a team of dancers and acrobats who simply specialize in a subcategory of tossing flames about. On occasion, they collaborate with the equine performance as well.

Wheel
The last circus act of this particular cast is another acrobatic one, of course. This acrobat performs an act inside a metal wheel, which could be a single ring, known as the Cyr wheel, or two rings with hand-holds, known as the Rohnrad. The acrobat performs tricks and exceptional feats of strength by using momentum in an almost dance-like way, being able to fall completely and build up again.
They usually wear skin-tight clothes for their performance.

NPCs
Of course, there are more circus members than listed in the above slots; extras, a plethora more of dancers, acrobats, and tight-rope specialists, equipment managers, fire throwers, the balancing performers, the musical crew, equine team, the story and show developing team - and troupe members often switch out, one cast performing in one show, and taking a break for the next. However, this RP focuses only on this particular, limited cast, who are the main specialists in any sort of outings of thievery.

Heist Roles:

Mastermind
The mastermind, as stated in the name, is a mastermind. They are incredibly smart and plan for everything. This individual is usually the leader of the crew, making all the decisions on who does what and finding the target in the first place, but that's not always the case; the mastermind sometimes lacks the ability to lead, and while they are a very valued asset, do not take on a leadership role over the crew.
There is only one mastermind.

Assassin
The assassin is the killer of the group, possibly the only one who's ever killed another human, or possibly one of the many in this crew to have participated in an act of murder. Either way, they are known as the assassin for a reason. They are the most knowledgeable of the group on the human body, and similar to the spies, are masters of stealth. The assassin is not used often, seeing as avoiding murder generally seems to be the best option, but they have come into play if it comes down to life-or-death.
There is only one assassin.

Distractions
The distractions may seem like small roles, but without them, any heist would be incredibly hard. These two could be the distractions themselves, simply forcing someone to pay attention to them to keep the others out of view or cause the distractions by starting a fire or other immediate emergencies. They, unlike the rest of the crew, want to be seen... most of the time.
There is one available distraction role.

Muscle
The muscle, or muscles, are there for when things get dirty. While they aren't exactly taking part in the theft, they are vital. They are usually hidden in the sidelines prepared to help any of the other crew members should they get in trouble, though sometimes they are partnered with a different role that won't have time to protect themselves during certain times. Though it's most common for these roles to be filled with large muscular people, as long as they can fight and take down others, they fit.
There can only be two muscle characters.

Sharpshooters
The sharpshooters are skilled in any form of ranged weapons, whether they be guns, bows, crossbows, or throwing knives. They are usually placed in towers and on roofs of buildings for keeping an eye on everything while not being right in the middle of everything and take up the role of a 'sniper' in a way, shooting down any possible trouble before it even gets close to the others. They can also work as muscle, hidden in the shadows, or partnering with another member as protection. Some choose to use non-lethal weapons like darts, whereas others will press a trigger without a problem.
There can only be two sharpshooters.

Spy
The spy is a mix between assassin, thief, and distraction. They are skilled in combat and stealth, and quite sly of hand, meaning if any of the thieves were incapacitated, they would be suitable replacements. They are charismatic and can make it seem like it was their target's idea to give them information, and are the best for doing reconnaissance before the heist.
There is only one spy role.

Thieves
The thieves are vital for any heist, and while they may not be as charismatic as a spy or distraction, skilled in fighting as the muscles, sharpshooters, or assassin, or as smart as the mastermind, are sly and flexible. They can break into and steal anything they set their mind to and, like the assassin and spy, are masters at hiding in plain sight. Their job is the one that cannot be seen at any cost. Ever. They usually don't have the ability or strength to kill any witness like the assassin or the skill to talk themselves out, which is why the sharpshooters, spies, and muscles are sometimes partnered with them.
There are two available thief roles.

- NPCs -

Populace
While our little circus troupe are the only available roles, that does not make them the only humans in the world. There are of course hundreds of people in the city that this RP takes place and can cause trouble of their own. They can be mentioned and controlled for short periods of time, though never as a point of view character. If any action of an NPC could change/move the plot/reveal information please PM me to make sure it's okay; small things like bumping into your character is fine, but if they, let's say, catch one of the thieves stealing something, you would need to let us know first.
