In the early 1800s, there was an influential man in Massachusetts name George Peabody. I and everyone I know pronounces "Peabody" the way it's spelled, but, apparently, in Massachusetts, it's pronounced "PEE-buh-dee". George Peabody married a woman who's maiden name was Baxter. They had a daughter and named her Phoebe Baxter Peabody. Abbreviate the middle name, and her name becomes Phoebe B. Peabody. Pretty funny, right? Well, that's not the end of the story. As time went on, Phoebe grew up and married a man who's last name was Beebe, making her name . . . Phoebe B. Peabody Beebe |
