Roles in the pack

∆ the council ∆
Queen - Lightning Crown
The queen is the overseer of the entire pack. The pack trusts her to act fairly toward them, and she trusts the pack to follow her laws. She makes the main decisions when it comes to the pack's safety. Always has the suffix -Crown.

Mate/Companion - Moon Heart
The mate or companion to the queen is the second in command of the pack, and often acts as an advisor or mediator in between two wolves. They are often seen helping around the pack or assisting the Queen. If the Queen were to die before an heir is chosen, the companion would be in charge until the heir was determined.

Singer - Hollow Song
The singer is the spiritual healer and guide of the pack. They protect the pack from otherworldly threats, as well as assist the circle of life and death within the pack. Wolves in this role have quite a large burden, being associated with the balance of the cycle, and rarely make friends while they have this role. They are not allowed to have a chosen mate. The role of singer is passed down from mother to eldest daughter. If there is no daughter to take the position, then a young female pup is chosen to learn the stories.

Herbalist - Hollow Song
The herbalist is the medic of the pack. They heal the injured and ill wolves, sometimes working with the singer if there are any major illnesses or near death experiences.

>The Main Pack<

Hunters
The hunters are groups of strong and fast wolves who help feed the pack.

Pupsitters
The pupsitters are gentle wolves who take care of the pups, acting as permanent mothers. They take care of abandoned pups, or pups who's mother's are on hunts or scouting.

Scouts
The two scouts keep watch in the outer reaches of the territory and scout out new lands.

Unranked
The unranked are a minority of the pack. They help around the camp and keep things clean, sometimes awaiting apprenticeship or earning of a role.

The Camp

The River Light Pack makes it's home in various campsites throughout the river's course, but all camps have a similar layout.
>Dens<

1. The Root Caves - A large series of burrows where most of the pack sleeps.

2. The Moss Den - A small-ish den with vines covering the entrance. Wolves directly related to the Queen live here, if they are not hunters or pup-sitters.

3. The Cave of Souls - A medium-sized den holding the spiritual/prophetic members of the pack. Usually the Singer and Herbalist sleep here, and sometimes other wolves blessed by the spirits.

The Territory

The territory of the River Light Pack stretches along the banks of the Oak River, mainly through the forests. It ends at the base of the Howling Mountains.

Riparian Woodland

1. The River Cave: a large cave covered in paintings, recording the history of the pack in the Riparian Woodlands.
2. Loon Lake: a large lake and a well known fishing spot. Young pups are brought here to learn how to swim.

Deciduous forest

1. Fox Creek:  A small river where herbs grow along the banks.
2. The Storyteller's Cave: Legend says that an ancient wolf lives in this cave, who tells his story to any who stop to listen.

Grasslands

1. The Red Den: A large barn, best avoided if one wants to avoid contact with humans.

Mountains

1. The headwaters: a large lake partway up the mountain, where the Oak River begins. Formerly divinus valley until the great flood.

Traditions and Culture

∆Rituals∆

Crowning of the Queen
When the old Queen dies, the chosen heir will undergo three tests to prove her worthiness. The first test is a test of strength. She must defeat three wolves in a battle. The second test is a test of smarts. The herbalist will quiz her on things such as weather patterns, hunting, and more. The last test is a test of agility and endurance. The singer and the new queen will travel to the headwaters, following a winding path up the mountains. Once they get back down, the singer will begin the ceremony. The leader must pledge her loyalty to the pack. When the ceremony is done, the singer paints the leader with white paint and the leader will receive a vision from the old Queen.

Silent Name ceremony
When a wolf choses their silent name, they tell the Singer what they want their name to be. The pack gathers around while the Singer addresses the wolf by their spoken name and gives a short speech and a mark is painted on their foreheads.

∆Traditions∆

Silent names
A wolf's silent name is the name that represents them in the face of the deities. There are only two people who know every wolf's  silent name, the wolf themself and the Singer. The Singer will use a wolf's secret name for spiritual healing or during a funeral ceremony.

Names
A wolf's adult name is split in two words. Prefixes, which are usually adjectives based on appearance or personality, and Suffixes, which are based off of appearance, personality, or skill. These names rarely change after adulthood, but sometimes a wolf will change their name after a major appearance or skill altering event.
Some suffixes are restricted to certain roles. Crown is the traditional suffix for Queens, and Star is the suffix used for heirs. Song is for singers, and Whisper is typically for singer apprentices.

∆Values∆

Respect and Cooperation
The Broken Shadow Pack is built on mutual respect and cooperation between wolves of the pack, with the understanding that they need every member to function. Above their respect for other wolves comes their respect for order. A wolf who disrespects a fellow packmate will be reprimanded in minor ways, but a wolf who disrespects the laws will be reprimanded in major ways, sometimes resulting in exile or death.

Determination
The pack sticks together until the end, knowing that they would not be able to survive the mountains alone. Their determination keeps them alive in the darkest winter nights, and gives them the strength and energy to keep moving when all seems lost.

Devotion and Wisdom
The pack believes that the deities guide their everyday lives and the wolves will worship them and praise them. A wolf caught disrespecting the deities or acting as a heretic will be exiled from the pack. Some wolves follow more closely with this value than others, following every word and teaching of the deities.

Preperation
Every wolf is trained in multiple roles, especially hunting and healing. Any wolf in the pack can provide basic care to an injured wolf, or hunt and fight to defend the pack.

History

The Broken Shadow Pack was created when Twisted Crown was a new adult. She lived her life alone on the riverbanks, hunting and traveling with her daugher. One day, Crow Heart, her daughter, had a vision from the deities of a sacred valley that she could live in if she promised to take care of other outcasts.
Twisted Crown agreed, and she began her travel through the grasslands, where she met Silver Cloud, a charming wolf who soon found out that she had a wit of her own. He had also been abandoned by his pack, and was looking for a pack to stay in. She told him about her vision, and he agreed to help her.
As they traveled through the grasslands and into the foothills, they found more wolves, including a fierce wolf called Burning Spark, who provided useful in protecting the pack on more than one occasion, and Shimmering Stone, who Twisted Crown eventually chose as her mate.
Finally, after many hardships, the pack made it to the valley, which Crow Heart named Divinus Valey, after the divine beings who led them there. The pack got to work quickly, creating a camp on the western side of the valley and exploring the surrounding mountains.
Now, the pack is known for their determination and strength, and has begun to expand and explore beyond their borders, as well as make allies and enemies of neighboring packs.

After a fierce storm that washed away much of the protection around camp and flooded the valley, the pack was forced to move, and soon after, Lightning Crown became the new queen. She brought the nomadic lifestyle to the pack, so they wouldn't be destroyed if there was another disaster.

Religon

The religion of the River Light Pack is shrouded in mystery. Most wolves in the pack don't know the true depth that the spirits hold. Few are able to understand the ancient myths. The wolves that do are revered as Singers, avatars of the spirits, and often worshipped as minor spirits after their death.

The spirits live in courts and have many names, such as the fair folk, elementals, and wild walkers. There are four major courts, each with it's own queen.

°Court of the Sun°
Feori - The Queen of the court of the sun, and the personification of light and the sun. She is a brightly colored wolf who wears a necklace of sunlight. She is passionate, friendly, and nurturing.
Abaro - the Companion to Feori, and the personification of fire. He is a rust-colored wolf who carries a faint smell of smoke.
Gemi - The spirit of passion and love.
Lillemor - The spirit of family and protector of young pups

°Court of the Moon°
Oskena - The Queen of the court of the moon, and the personification of night. She often appears as a blue-grey wolf wearing a silver necklace. She is quiet, thoughtful, and distant.
Jore - the Companion of Oskena, and the personification of dreams.
Ira - The spirit of wisdom and wit.
Gene - The spirit of knowledge and mutation.

°Court of the River°
Alira - The Queen of the court of the river, and the personification of life and earth. She appears as a green wolf with ivy growing on her.
Eskir - the Companion of Alira, and the personification of water.
Havi - The spirit of storms and wind.
Herbert - The spirit of medicine

°Court of the Below°
Moran - The Queen of the Court of the below, and the personification of death. They appear as a dark wolf with black wings and green eyes that lack pupils.
Ceros - the Companion of Moran, and the personification of time.
Nos - The spirit of rebirth.
Ferine - The spirit of illness.

The River Light Pack also worships notable ancestors and deceased packmates, including Crow Heart, the first singer of the pack, and Blue Light, the herbalist that led the pack through a severe plague.
