Locations

The Market [Wolves for Sale]
A small cave which houses only one permanent resident. Their name is unknown to the entire pack and they are often referred to as "Silver Friend". During the day, they roam with the wolves of the Order who wish to move on, trying to find them a new home. At night, none of the Order can find them.

The Bureau [Herbalist, Scouts]
A well concealed cave which houses the lead, herbalist, and scouts. The lead stays closest to the entrance and never seems to truly sleep. The scouts and herbalist keep an eye on their lead and do their best to keep the pack in good standing.

The Library [Mentors]
At first glance, this appears to be simply a large clearing. Closer inspection (and thorn removal) shows it to be so much more. Dense brambles and undergrowth protect the opening. Several trees have small dens and the far side is a low bluff filled with small cubbyholes. Various supplies fill each, and a handful of deeper holes are filled with comfortable bedding material. The mentors use this area to teach the young ones everything they can until their final days.

The Nursery [Pregnant, Nursing, Pupsitters, and Puppies]
A massive cavern past the armory and training grounds which has countless spots for pregnant wolves, puppies, and weary but joyful pupsitters. There always seems to be activity and energy here.

The Armory [Hunters and Future Hunters]
A seemingly small cave with well concealed passages to the nursery and training grounds. Three groups of hunters and the adults waiting to join a group can be found here. The first is a collection of female identifying hunters, known as the Ladykillers. The second is a collection of originally only birch males which expanded to all male identifying hunters, known as the Birch Boys. Last but certainly not least are the trainees, those working on building up their skills before joining their respective teams. As time has gone on and new leaders have come to power, the gender definition between the two groups has begun to slip from favor. Ultimately, it will become whichever group the hunter feels most comfortable filling their role in.

Training Grounds [Adolescents to be Kept]
Past the armory is the training grounds, a place where adolescents wanting to join the Order are found. Here they determine what role they wish to take. Each shadows as many representatives of their future job as they can, preparing them for their role in the Order. They also cross train and learn much about the Order, just in case their chosen path is less appealing than they initially thought.

Wanderers [Raise & Chase]
These adolescents strive to leave the Order. Simply because they were born into it doesn't mean they wish to stay. They are often seen near the Silver Friend's cave. They typically say their goodbyes the day before they leave and slip away during the night. Those who slip off into the wilderness and find their way to a new pack mention the Silver Friend giving them advice and helping them along the way. The fate of those who aren't seen again is unknown.

The Infirmary [Quarantine for Contagious Wolves]
Rare as it is, sometimes a wolf comes in injured or ill. When this happens, the herbalist is summoned and the wolf is ushered to the secluded medical cave. If necessary, they will remain their in quarantine. This cave is a small one, not intended to hold many wolves at once as the herbalist works hard to make sure everybody is healthy and happy.

Silver friend lore?

(Posted 14 June, 1100 game time, as part of The Great Migration Event aka my kick in the rear to finally start writing down my lore)

Compass paced the outskirts of the Order. They were still new here, many of them still training. Only recently had he begun sending the scouts out beyond the forests, grassland, and mountains. Even now, he found himself missing the shade and shelter of the place he’d first started his pack. While the mountains certainly provided plenty of caves and dens to call home, it brought far more risk for the few puppies they’d brought into this world or adopted from other packs. One wrong step and they might simply slide off the edge before Mist or Bat could catch them or even see they were in danger. At least in the forest, he and the pupsitters knew how to counter almost any dangers they might find.

A blissful distraction came in the form of the hunters, all wolves he'd met while exploring save for his dear friend Map, bringing back their prey. The small doe seemed like it should take more than one wolf to drag. Unsurprisingly, Frolic ever so stubbornly dragged it alone. A soft red now spread across her. Not blood, he realized, but almost certainly another new marking. How these markings appeared on her baffled him. When they'd first met, she'd been a soft cream with a lightly shaded back and lines of white along her undersides. Then it'd been a touch of grey on her back, such a small thing he almost hadn't noticed. Then her neck had darkened, another easy to pass off change.

Now this. This couldn't be missed. The color reminded him of the clay he'd accidentally wandered into far too many times while exploring. She caught his look as the excited hunters approached but said nothing, an amused glint in her eyes. "A good catch, that should keep us well fed. Take it over to the bureau, the scouts should be coming back from their morning patrol soon and Aspen hasn't eaten yet either," he fell in stride with Map as the group headed for the central cave and lowered his voice, "What happened with Frolic?"

She headed him off toward a small clearing, briefly calling back to the other hunters to let them know she'd catch up with them later. Her attention returned to Compass, "I'm not sure. I saw her slip away for a moment when the chasers were just starting but I was still helping them stay on track. She came out of nowhere when it was her time, that doe never saw her coming. Neither did any of us." Both contemplated the potential reasons for this. Both knew Frolic to be excellent at what she did. Yet these markings unnerved them. They appeared out of nowhere, just as she had. This most recent one in particular couldn't be passed off as aging or the coat lightening in the sun. Map reported guiding them through several streams and rivers, claiming it was to cool off. The clay-like marking remained.

"I suspect there's something quite wrong with this place," Compass finally admitted. He'd been trying to hold off his suspicions. After all, what did he have to base them on? A gut feeling, the sensation of somebody else watching over his shoulder, even the day to day sameness he felt exploring. How many times had he seen that toad? How many groundhogs had screeched at him? And that adorable little pika, surely there couldn't be that many of the little creatures with their shocking ways!

"I agree. We were talking about it while we were heading out, and we'd like to move back home."

Compass stopped dead in his tracks, not entirely believing that she agreed. That all of the Ladykillers agreed. "I-okay. I'll talk to the scouts when we get back and see what they think. Maybe they'll have an idea of how many wolves we'll have to clear out to get back in there, or can check next time they go out."

"Thank you," she briefly nuzzled his neck before trotting off to find the hunters.

Compass made his way back toward the bureau, weary from the adventures of the day. A quick nap, then he would talk with Adventure or Frost. It was time to go home.
