Purple Moon Pack Lore [no posting]

With time, training and a lot of help, Amber Sun soon grew more comfortable being the pack's new leader, although she still was a long way from being as strong as Amber Moon. Days went by, and an ancestor of Sakutaro, Autumn Frost, brought home a very particular pup from the bear Lillemor, one which Amber Sun agreed strongly reminded her of Solar Reverie, the breeding male of the Noel Winter Eve pack. Amber Sun agreed to let the little pup join the Purple Moon Pack, and invited Solar Reverie and his mate Lunar Dream to name the pup who resembled him so much despite not being related to him at all. They decided on the name Solar Dream, and Amber Sun could see how her eyes where shining looking at Solar Reverie.

A few days later, Amber Sun was approached be the herbalist Minoki. "I am retiring", she said firmly, and Amber Sun looked at her dumbfounded. It was true Minoki was getting old, and she knew that she had already had picked a pup to be the new herbalist, but tradition had it that the current herbalist stayed until their passing. "I am not asking you for your permission", Minoki added, "I had a good life and a loving mate, I want to live out my days in peace without having to worry about herbs and illness. I was picked out of lack of other options, Corax had already passed and I was thrown into this role with no experience, I made a lot of mistakes. Kimiko has a natural talent, I already trained her and I can still help here while I live, she will do so much better than me. Please don't try to change my mind." Amber Sun sighed and smiled. That was Sakutaro's family for you alright. Stubbornly running with the head through the wall, unchanging will, but kind and strong. "I guess it is time to change the traditions, then?", she answered and Minoki closed her eyes thankful, "I have no right to forbid you your wish. You served the pack well, and Kimiko is very skilled with your training. Do as you please, you earned it."
Minoki retired from the herbalist den, making space for Kimiko, a naturally gifted pup with a strong spiritual connection. Kimiko was able to see and summon the dead, using her third eye, although doing that was extremely exhausting and should only be done in an emergency.

It was a breezy fall day when Amber Sun roamed around the territory, looking for new hunting grounds. The air was cold and whispered stories of a hard and cruel winter yet to come. Lost in thought the trailed off her usual paths, until the scent of another pack hit her nose. She sniffed, it was a small pack and she couldn't sense any hostility. She heard whimpering and howling and carefully approached. The pack was gathered around a rather big, black and white puppy...or two puppies? No... no it was one puppy with two heads. It reminded Amber Sun of Star and Sun, however this puppy was different. While Star and Sun where joined right at the neck, this pup and its heads had their own set of front paws, and two tails. "Tell me, what do we do with them? They will never hunt!", a big black wolf roared, Amber Sun thought that must be the alpha. "They are obviously in pain, too", another wolf sad and a brown she-wolf lowered her head in sadness. Was that their mother? The alpha bared his fangs, ready to put the sad mutated pup out of its misery, when Amber Sun jumped right into their camp. "You don't have to do that!" She was greeted by bared teeth and snarling. "We have several pups, just like them! I can take care of them. My herbalist can help them live." The mother of the pup looked at Amber Sun, she seemed to think. "It is better than killing them", she said to the alpha, "What can they do? They may die anyways if we refuse...let them have a chance. Please." The alpha growled. "Remove them from my sight", he huffed, and turned around. Amber Sun carefully approached the scared pups. "Don't worry", she said softly, "I will save both of you." Gently she picked the pup up and sat them on her back. She looked over to the mother. "You can trust me", she said, and the wolf nodded. "You have kind eyes", she responded, "There is no ill-will in you, I can feel that."

So Amber Sun carried the strange puppy back to the camp. Gently it buried their claws into Amber Sun's winter fur, quietly yelping in joy whenever she jumped a little. She felt that the pup had cramps and must have been in pain for a long time, it was way older than the other ones when they found them. Back at the camp, the rather filled cave of mutated puppies stormed their leader and their new friend. "What is your name?", Star asked, her eyes shimmering in excitement. The twin puppies shook their heads. "Amber Sun? Can I name them?", Star asked, and the alpha nodded. "You are Luna", Star said, and looked at Sun. "You remind me of Oreo", she said, thinking about the kind pupsitter that used to play with them. "Luna and Oreo it is", Amber Sun said, and the puppy seemed happy. "Now, let Minoki take care of them from now, they need rest." Star nodded knowingly.

Amber Sun sat in her den, looking down on her pack going about their daily routines. Nothing seemed out of sorts - she saw Mayu playing with the twins, she saw mentors giving puppy lessons, the food pile was stocked nice and tidy, some teen wolves were playing pretend-hunting. And yet, there was a strange vibration in the air, something that let the hair on her neck stand, but she couldn't see or smell anything. But Amber Moon taught her to go with her gut, even if she was wrong... She stood up and let out an alarming howl. With a sigh she saw how the pups instantly retreated into the puppy den, Mayu was already out of sight, the hunters stood guard while the scouts just came back. Clear Sky looked up to his alpha, who just stood there, straining her ears and eyes. "What is-?", Blackberry tried to say, as suddenly the earth shook. Amber Sun didn't waste any thoughts and jumped down to her pack, as she saw massive brown creatures storming towards them. Grizzly Bears. Time seemed to come to a stop. Besides Blackberry, Clear Sky and Caramel, there weren't many strong enough to take on bears. Yet, they had the advantage in numbers, and she already evacuates the pups. "Skyler! To the mutie den! Blueberry! Protect the pups! Everyone else, attack!" The older wolves hurried to secure the food and herbs, losing those in a fight could have fatal consequences. She saw Clear Sky launching himself at the biggest of the bears, it was almost black and his yellow eyes pure hatred. A paw smacked him and the wolf was tossed aside like a ragdoll. "Clear Sky!", Amber Sun screamed and jumped at the bear. She evaded a swipe and clawed at the eyes until hot blood sprinkled all across her. Clear Sky didn't move. She heart whimpering and howling, claws snapping, bones breaking, the smell of blood filled the air.
Blood dripped over Amber Sun's eyes, she couldn't see, couldn't feel anymore. Her head felt dizzy, but slowly, the noises faded. She saw bodies scattered around, but the bears were all dead.
She tripped over to Clear Sky. He was breathing, still breathing. "Oh Clear Sky...", she whimpered, "Don't leave us." Blackberry came limping towards them, he looked horrible. "I'm so sorry Amber", Clear Sky coughed, "But my time is up. I can already feel the Moon wolf, waiting for me." He looked to Blackberry, his eyes cloudy. "You need to take over for me, Blackberry." "I am too old to be the beta!", Blackberry protested, but Clear Sky shook his head. "They need a strong beta after this fight", he said, his voice becoming sore, "I trust you will choose a good beta who takes over after you. I will always be with you." He sighed. "Skyler...Skyler..." "Skyler!", Blackberry barked, and the beautiful she-wolf appeared from the cave above. "Clear Sky...no..." Her voice broke as she slided down and cowered next to her beloved mate. The bears hadn't reached up there, so she was unharmed. "Oh please, don't leave me..." But Clear Sky licked weakly over her nose, closed his eyes and then his body became very still. "No...no..." Amber Sun felt the pain Skyler was feeling like it was her own. The pack loved Clear Sky. Blackberry stood there in a daze, until he suddenly snapped back to reality. "Blueberry!" He bolted to the pup den, and a bone-shaking howl was heard. Amber Sun almost stumbled over Skyler who was paralyzed in pain.
Blackberry was shaking and shivering, looking down to Blueberry who was laying in a puddle of blood. A bear was right next to her, torn to shreds. She really grew over herself. Blueberry wasn't a fighter at all but yet she would have given her life to protect the pups. "No...no, oh Moon Wolf, please don't take her...please, I'll do anything...", Blackberry whimpered to himself. Suddenly the air coldened, and it felt like time froze. Amber Sun saw a strange black wolf appear, looking down at Blueberry, then at Blackberry who didn't even seem to notice, then at Amber Sun. "She is special", the wolf said, "I decided to grant your wish, but it comes at a price." Amber Sun's heart raced. The Moon Wolf had heard their pleading. "Why didn't you save Clear Sky?", she asked, voice shaken. "Clear Sky is content with moving on", he responded, "He was old and sick. Didn't you know?" Amber Sun stood in shock. He had been sick? Why didn't he say anything? "What is the cost?", she asked. The Moon Wolf sighed. "This ritual is much more complex than what I have done for Bando. See, souls are like a core. They can be either good or bad." He lifted a paw towards Clear Sky. "Look". A blue orb appeared just over Clear Sky's head. "That is a good soul. His heart was pure and good, he never had any ill intention. Then there are these." He pointed over to the bear, the orb was orange, almost red. "This bear was driven by anger and hatred. See, his parents were killed by wolves when he was just a cub. Nothing your pack can be accounted for, but he acted out of hatred." Then he pointed over to Blueberry. "But this, this is something I have never seen before." Blueberry's orb was vivid, pulsating purple. "She is special. Something even beyond my own power. But I know that I can grant purple souls immortality. Predators usually have orange or red souls, but the fox that traded her soul for Bando had a light yellow one. That is why I accepted. That fox was pure at heart, and I will make sure she goes to the Moon Fox once her time is up." "But this means she is still alive", Amber Sun said, "You said this needs a sacrifice." "I'm afraid we need a huge life energy supply here." "I'll do it", Blackberry said weakly, "I will trade my life for hers." "No!", Amber Sun yelped, "We need you!" "I can't let her die", he whimpered, "Not her." "I'll do it." All three turned around to see Skyler, "I can see him again, right? I can be with Clear Sky?" The Moon Wolf nodded. "I will make sure of it." Amber Sun didn't try to stop her. She knew the grief would break her apart. She loved Clear Sky too much. The Moon Wolf put a paw on Skyler's head, the other one on Blueberry's lifeless body. He chanted something in a strange tongue, words Amber Sun never heard before and couldn't understand. The wind picked up, stormed around them, tried to push them off their paws, and suddenly Skyler fell lifeless to the ground, her body made a thudding noise, and Blueberry took a deep breath just like she had been under water for a long time. The Moon Wolf was gone. Blackberry just laid beside her and buried his head in her fur. "It doesn't hurt", she said and looked at her blood soaked for. The wounds were gone. "What happened?"

It took Blueberry a few days to get back to her old self. The death of Clear Sky left the pack shaken, and Blackberry was frantically looking for an heir, since he knew he wasn't getting any younger. Amber Sun watched the old scout Caramel teach some puppies lessons about which animals were dangerous on scouting tours, which herbs they should avoid touching and dangerous paths. Caramel had gotten so old...and they had become quite close friends. But Amber Sun knew they needed a new scout eventually. Blackberry had taken over for now, but Blackberry was old and she knew he wouldn't be around for long anymore. Blackberry entered the camp, followed by a charming, odd-eyed male wolf with gorgeous dark, purple-ish fur. His eyes looked around with an interested shimmer. A soft smile crept over Amber Sun's muzzle. Indeed Blackberry knew how to choose. "This is Kieran", Blackberry told her, "He is agile and fast, I saw him catch a rabbit like it's just a snail." "He looks kind", Amber Sun responded. Blackberry sighed. "I will teach him well, as much as I can", he promised. "I know", Amber Sun responded, "I'd expect nothing less of you."
Kieran prove to be quite the charmer fast, having gained quite the attraction from several she-wolves within the pack. But he wasn't in any rush, he was never arrogant or mean, yet he always kept some distance. He never seemed to let anyone close, not that this changed anything in his popularity though.
The days went on and Blackberry eventually passed away peacefully next to Blueberry. She promised him she would visit him in the spirit realm, the Moon Wolf had granted her this previlege.
Amber Sun grew more worried about the pack day by day, since she was aging as well and still had no idea who should take over. She knew the pack needed a strong alpha, someone who could fight bears if need be. She had made a deal with a passing through pack, in exchange for food they offered them a strong pup of their leader. The little merle puppy that stayed with the pack instantly had Amber Sun in a daze. She was incredibly smart and strong, a fast learner, intelligent eyes and a keen sense of hearing. Her instincts were sharp, and her fighting spirit out of this world. Amber Sun trained the pup who she called Skadi, and when she was old enough, she became the new scout alongside Kieran. Amber Sun just knew it had to be her. Caramel had passed away, and even though Amber Sun was still sad about losing her old friend, she knew Skadi was the right choice. Soon she gave Skadi her own apprentice, since Kieran had aged quite much as well, and she realized Skadi had quite...the interest in the stunning silver wolf. In the meantime, it became pretty apparent that Kieran had fallen for a she-wolf in the main hunting party, Mieruko the finisher. Amber Sun sighed. It had been a white since she had seen so much harmony. She knew Skadi would make a good leader, and her apprentince, Shinozaki, would be a great scout afterwards. She was sure these two would become mates sooner or later, whenever Skadi had the courage to become true to her feelings, and the pack would have a leader stronger than ever before.

Amber Sun woke up with a strange feeling. She was cold, no fur brushed against hers next to her. She looked around, but her mate was nowhere to be found. She felt a cold sensation rush through her veins as she bolted out of her den. The pack sat in a circle around a spot in the middle of the camp, heads lowered, some whimpered softly. "Amber Sun", Kimiko approached her, "I am so sorry...Coconut, he just passed away. He came to me in the middle of the night saying he had pain in his chest, I tried everything, but I cannot stop old age..." Amber Sun shook her head. "I know you did everything you could", she whispered. No, Kimiko would have saved him if it was just an illness, but Amber Sun knew he was old, just as was she. But she never expected Coconut to go on without her. In the past it seemed like the leader always died together with their beloved mate. She walked over to the golden wolf with the spotted fur, he looked just like he was sleeping. The wolves let Amber Sun through and distanced themselves as she said goodbye to her beloved Coconut. "Wait for me, love", she said, "I will come to you soon." And it was as she could feel a gentle touch on her shoulder, just as if Coconut's spirit laid his nose onto her and she meant she could hear a faint "I will."

Amber Sun wasn't really herself in the coming days. She barely left the den, wouldn't eat properly or talk to anyone, not even Kimiko. Not until the hunters came back from their usual route, dragging a lifeless body with them. Amber Sun stood in her den entrance, studying the muddy body of the white wolf the hunters were dragging into camp. Heads perked out of dens, whimpering and whispering crowded the camp. "What happened?", she asked, her voice raspy from not being used for days. The wolves shook their heads. "We found him like this", Mieruko said, "He has green foam around his mouth." Kimiko inspected the wolf, a putrid smell was emitted from the fur. "It's unlike anything I've ever seen", she said, and looked to Amber Sun. "Oh Frost..." Frost's mate had died a while ago, and he disconnected from the pack ever since. Amber Sun always had the feeling he was restless and lost, he would wander off for days without being seen and return silently, then sleep for days. But seeing him like this... Frost was a kind soul, the pups loved young Frost teaching them to hunt. His eyes were wide and stared at her, blank and pained. "It seems he caught the darkening", Amber Sun heard a soft voice, Blueberry stood next to her. "It's a strange illness the Moon Wolf told me about. It will haunt a heart that has lost all will to live, it festers like a tumor, until it eventually errupts. He went insane. I think he died in a seizure." Amber Sun stared at her, lost in thought. "We should have helped him", she said, suddenly feeling guilt strangling her. "No, Amber Sun, there was nothing that could have been done. We can still save you, though." She blinked. "Me?" "You have the same look in your eyes", Blueberry said softly, "I know you miss him. But unlike Frost, who couldn't live with it, you have the certainty that you will see him again soon. And look...Frost's spirit is finally free. He loved her so much. His ghost wanted to be with her. Do not pity him. Think about saving yourself." She sighed. "This can never happen again", she whispered, and Kimiko nodded. "Blueberry, you have to teach me all symptoms. Maybe we can prevent this from happening again." Blueberry turned away, motioning Amber Sun to follow her with her tail tip. "You know that I can see spirits, right?", she asked, her voice was so soft and soothing. "You...you can?" "Of course", she said, "But only Kimiko knows. I thought she told you, but perhaps she didn't want to disturb you." Amber Sun stopped. "You can see Frost? Blackberry? Coconut?" Blueberry nodded. "Frost is happy", she said, "He says he is sorry, but it is not your fault. He made this choice in his heart, the longing for his mate, to be reunited again. As for Coconut-", she smiled faintly, "He is waiting for you, Amber Sun. He isn't going anywhere. But we, we need you here. We need our leader. Do you understand that?" Amber Sun watched Kimiko carefully clean Frost's muddy fur for the ceremony, brushing leaves and flowers over him to get rid of the horrid smell. "Skadi will make a good leader", she said lost in thought. "As you are. And until you take your final breath, you vowed to be our alpha. Stop pitying yourself. It's not the end." Amber Sun felt as if her fighting spirit came rushing back to her. "You are right, you're right. Thank you, Blueberry. I wouldn't know what we would do without you."

It was unusually stormy and Amber Sun didn't like the scouts and hunters going out in such a storm, but they needed to eat, so she didn't really have a choice but to let them go. The wind howled and clawed at the trees, although their camp was protected by bush, it stood no chance against the cold wind. The nursing mothers had crawled deep within the den, not even Mayu was to be seen peaking out of their upper den. She meant to hear howling in the distance, but was unsure if it was the wind or someone calling..."....- SUN!!!" She jumped, strained to hear, but she hear it again, "AMBER SUN!" She saw the young Shinozaki rushing back, bloody all over, limping and his left front paw was dangling around. He had broken it, but he ran without a care. "AMBER SUN! It's Skadi!", he coughed breathless, "She got caught in a landslide!" Amber Sun barked, that was all Kieran had to hear, he was right next to hear. "I have to come with you!", Shinozaki whimpered, before he collapsed. "Bring him to Kimiko!", Amber Sun ordered Kieran gainst the storm. He nodded. "But-" "I will follow your scent. Trust me! I will find her!" Mieruko's hunting party was close, Amber Sun hoped to run into them but she had no time to wait around. Her paws almost were pushed off the ground by the storm, it just seemed to get worse. Shinozaki's scent was faint but she strained hard and followed it to the trail leading up to the mountains, where fresh raw earth covered the path they usually took over the hills. "Skadi!", Amber Sun yelled and blindly started to dig. It was hard to breathe, hard to pick up her scent, she dug and sniffed but found no sign of her. "Amber Sun!" Amber Sun almost collapsed in relief, as she heard Mieruko's voice. "Skadi got buried!", she yelled as she continued to dig. The hunting party joined her, until Amber Sun's paws hit something soft. "I got her!" The other wolves jumped over to her, dug frantically, until they uncovered Skadi's patchy fur. She was covered in mud and scars, but as they got the dirt off her, Amber Sun saw she was still breathing. White Tip bit into Skadi's neck and pulled, Amber Sun was in awe over the sheer strenght of the fragile looking white wolf. Skadi coughed, shook her head and looked up to Amber Sun, who was still standing on the pile of mud. Her eyes widened. "Amber Sun! Get down!" It was too late. Amber Sun heard a boneshaking rumbling, and the last thing she knew as she looked up as another landslide rushing down onto her, burying her underneath.

It was warm. It smelled familiar, yet she couldn't quite place the scent. Her ear twitched, her eyes blinked. She saw a den, covered thick in dry leaves and grass. A wolf was sitting next to her, lightly asleep. She stood up, careful not to wake the other wolf. Her head felt heavy. She exited the den, the sun stung her eyes, she blinked again, getting used to the brightness. Wolves were on the clearing under her, going on their daily life. How did she get here?
"Amber Sun?" The sudden voice scared her, almost made sent her tumbling over the edge of the small hill, but the other wolf caught her just in time. "You are awake, I am so glad." She stared at the wolf. She had such beautiful, kind eyes. "Amber Sun?" She blinked again. "Me?" Her voice felt raspy and hurt her throat. "Are you alright?" "I...um...I'm sorry but..." She took a step backwards. "Who are you?"
Kimiko stared at Amber Sun, her heart felt heavy. Amber Sun was hit by multiple rocks and buried under a massive landslide, just after they rescued Skadi. But unlike Skadi, who recovered in a few days, Amber Sun had been unconcious for quite a while, leaving Kimiko wondering if she had taken inner trauma. "Oh no...", she mumled, and Amber Sun's eyes turned foggy. She was scared out of her mind. "Calm down, calm down", she said softly, "You had an accident. We are your family. You are our leader." Amber Sun still stared at her. "Wouldn't I know about that?", she said shaken, "I have never seen any of you..." The pack had noticed their alpha, some stared up in silence. Kieran slowly approached, Amber Sun took another step back. "Will she recover?", Kieran asked, but Kimiko looked defeated. "I can't say", she said, almost whispering. Blueberry had approached, searchingly looking at Amber Sun as well. "I can't read her", she admitted, "It seems our connection was cut since she doesn't remember me." "We have to calm her down or she might run", Kieran said in a low voice so the panicked Amber Sun couldn't hear. Suddenly, a small pup pushed her way through Kieran's paws, planting herself right in front of the scared alpha. "I will show you around", the little wolf chirped, and Amber Sun seemed to calm down. Her tail lowered, her fur softened down, and her eyes became more relaxed. "Alright", she said, it was almost too easy. "Wait, should we-" "Let her", Kimiko interfered, her eyed had an odd glow as she watched Amber Sun leave with the pup. "Isn't that one of North's pups?", Kieran asked confused, "How did she do that?" "Well I guess a pup is less threatening than us", Kimiko said, "But something is special about that pup." "What is her name?", Kieran inquired. "I don't know. North said she never accepted any." Blueberry seemed in a daze. "She casted that spell like she never did anything else in her life", she said in awe, "She is incredible." Kimiko turned to face her. "What do you mean?" "That puppy is incredibly gifted. Her aura...it's insane. It's dazzling. She cast a spell on Amber Sun. She may not remember us but she feels like she can trust her." Kimiko was stunned. "Obscura", Blueberry then said, "Her name is Obscura." "How do you know? I thought-", Kieran meant to ask, but Blueberry shook her head. "You do not need to tell me your name for me to know it. I can see it. It's engraved in her soul. But I never saw any so clearly." Kimiko sighted. Their alpha had lost their memory, but it seemed like an incredible blessing was on their way, on four tiny paws taking a path with unclear ending.
Several days passed, Obscura had convinced Amber Sun that she was actually at home here. Kieran, Kimiko, Blueberry and Skadi sat together in front of Amber Sun's den. "You are the next in line, Skadi. You have to act as our lead until Amber Sun remembers. We can't live like this", Kieran insisted. "Me?? I am not a leader! She would never pick me!", Skadi denied, but Blueberry shook her head. "She picked you a long time ago", she assured. Skadi looked at her paws. "But I have no idea what to do." "She didn't either when she became alpha", Kimiko giggled, then her expression hardened again. "We hope this is just temporary, but she may never recover her memory. We have to be strong for the pack. Obscura may be gifted but she cannot heal the damage." "Nothing can heal her except herself", Blueberry nodded, "I asked the Moon Wolf, but this is beyond their possibilities. We have to wait it out."
Skadi had to take the position of acting lead until Amber Sun recovered her memory...but would she ever?

The days passed uneventful, with Amber Sun never regaining any of her former memories. Skadi had a few rough first days, but everyone was very supportive in her first few steps, Shinozaki ever at her side, Kieran showing her what to do and Kimiko always lend a helping paw. It hadn't rained in a very long time, and although it was winter, the air was dry and not a single snowflake to be found. The trees around the camp were slowly dying, with no water to be found anywhere, the rivers had dried or frozen entirely, which made the pack ever thirsty. Amber Sun dreamed. She saw blurry faces of wolves that were so oddly familiar, yet she couldn't quite place where she knew them from. Kind eyes looked at her, odd eyes, bright fur with dark patches. A warm feeling shook her core. She knew this wolf, he was trying to tell her something but she couldn't hear him. What was he telling? Who was he? Suddenly she woke up with a burning taste in her mouth. Dark fog hung in the air... only that this wasn't ordinary fog. It was hot, burning hot at that. Fire! Amber Sun bolted to her paws and dashed out of her den, howling and screaming and coughing the coal out of her lungs. "FIRE!" Paws stumbled out of their dens, howling, yelping, wolves running over each other. "Keep calm!", Amber Sun yelled over the crackling of the flames, "Get the pups! Get the older wolves! Skadi, Shinozaki, get the upper den! I'm getting Kimiko!" Skadi stood and stares at her for a moment. This aura, this authority... Amber Sun was still in there somewhere, even if she didn't remember.
The dying trees crumbled to the flames, with nothing but weak dry wood to hold against them, they cracked and fell left and right and Amber Sun had to dodge multiple burning branches that came crashing down. How did this happen? She made her way to Kimikos den only to realize a tree had fallen onto it, trapping the herbalist inside. But that wasn't what froze her in her tracks. She saw Obscura, standing right inside the flames, but her fur was untouched. The flames had a cold tone around her, and she turned to look at Amber Sun, who stared at her in a daze. "We need to get Kimiko out of there!", she yelled. "Get out of the flames!", Amber Sun responded, she shook herself out of her trance and jumped over the burning tree in front of her. "The flames can't hurt me", Obscura answered and bit into the smoking hot tree branch. "Don't be stupid! You are shaking! The flames around you are freezing cold!", Amber Sun responded, and Obscura flinched. "You are smart", she mumbled, as she dragged the burning tree off the herbalist den. How was that small wolf so strong? "Help me dig. Kimiko is under there somewhere!" Amber Sun jumped right next to her and started clawing at the ground. "I have to tell you something", Obscura said, not even losing her breath, "I am not a wolf in the truest sense. I am a reincarnated spirit - a fire spirit, you see. I did horrible things, killed many. Spirits are immortal, but reincarnation makes us mortal again - I thought I could atone for what I've done. But I was so scared. How would that sound? I am not like you. But Kimiko knew all along something was off about me." "That doesn't matter", Amber Sun coughed, as she struggled into the hole they dug, "You are a part of my pack. I don't care where you came from. You breathe and live like me." She dragged herself into the den, two tired eyes met her. "Kimiko!", she yelped, "Come on, lets go." Kimiko scrambled to her paws, her steps unsteady, coughing, her eyes watered heavily from the heat. Amber Sun pushed her through the hole, but when she tried to follow, another tree crashed down onto the den, trapping her underneath. A horrible smell of burnt fur filled her nose. "Amber Sun!" Obscura's panicked voice filled her ears. "You have to go", she whispered. "No, never! I am not leaving you here!" Kimiko coughed heavily. "You have to get her out of here", Amber Sun responded weakly, "Kimiko...I remember everything. Right now. Obscura...you know, don't you? She is the one." Kimiko smiled weakly and nodded. "I thought so", Amber Sun sighed, her head dropped to the ground and her eyes closed. "I will always watch over you, Obscura." "No!" Obscura whimpered, tears flooding down her face. "No...please, get up..." But Amber Sun didn't move anymore. The flames were clawing at the wood, and soon the smoke blurred her vision. Obscura gritted her teach and with Kimiko at her shoulder, they limped out of the burning forest.
Many wolves had suffered severe burns, but none that wouldn't heal. All except for Amber Sun took shelter at the clearing over the river, next to the mountain. A heavy storm had set in, and Kimiko guessed an early lightning strike might have caused the fire. It rained massively, and the pups snuggled together to keep themselves warm. The night was cold and loud, thunder shook the sky, and Obscura thought it was the heavens, grieving the loss of Amber Sun.
The next morning, fog covered the burnt forest, and it had started to snow. It still smelled horrible, but this was their home, and they refused to abandon their camp. Skadi was silent ever since Obscura returned without Amber Sun. When they reached the entrance of their camp, Skadi stopped. "Focus on getting the dens ready. Obscura, you come with me." "I can help", Kimiko said and coughed. "You rest. Come, Obscura." Skadi didn't look at her once and Obscura wondered if she blamed her for Amber Sun's death. They reached the herbalist den, and Obscura saw a brown body undernearth a burnt down tree. The flames hadn't touched her much, but Amber Sun gave her life. For Kimiko, for the pack. But most of all, for Obscura, the useless spirit she was. "Don't blame yourself", Skadi said softly, as she rolled the now light weight tree off the old alphas body. "She knew what she was doing. She saw a lot on you. Hold her memory tight. Live up to her expectations." Obscura stared at her. "But this is my fault", she responded, "It could-" "Don't disrespect Amber Sun's choice", she said, "She knew it was time. Don't worry. We will see her agian." They spent a while cleaning Amber Sun's fur, letting the pack say their goodbyes, before they buried her next to her favorite spot near the mountains.
The following night, Obscura dreamed. She saw a starless sky, wide meadows and a bright full moon hovering above her. Shadows crept towards her, but when they closed in, the blurry figures turned into wolves. Many of them she didn't recognize, but one instantly made her heart jump. Amber Sun looked young and strong, standing next to a beautiful spotted male with bright fur, who lovingly tilted his head onto hers. "Don't be sad", Amber Sun told her, "I will always be here. You will make a fine herbalist for my beloved pack. Your past doesn't matter anymore. This is your chance - you belong to us." Obscura felt tears rushing down her face. "I won't fail you."

Obscura stared at the herbs laying between her paws, lost in thought. She heard Kimiko talk to her from very far away. "Obscura? Are you even listening to me?" The she-wolf shook her head. "Sorry", she mumbled, "I was just-" She froze. Something felt off. Suddenly she felt very cold, and the next thing she knew it went all dark.

Obscura blinked, looking into Kimikos worried eyes. "Thank the Moon Wolf, you are back", she said softly, "You stopped breathing. I thought-" "It was me." Obscura said up straight and stared at Kimiko, with a sudden realization. "What was you?"
"The fire. I caused the fire. I killed her. Do you hear me? I killed her." Kimiko shook her head. "I believed spirits lose their elemantal power upon reincarnation", she continued stone faced, "But, I saw it. I had a vision. I don't remember...but I saw me. I caused the fire." Kimiko just looked at her for a very long time. "Don't you think she knew that?", she finally said. Obscura flinched as if a burning tree branch had hit her face. "She would never have let me stay if she knew." Kimiko shook her head. "Amber Sun knew, Obscura. That is exactly why she wanted you to stay. Your power is raw, but you can learn." "I don't believe you. What if anyone finds out? What if-" Kimiko stood up. "Follow me."
When they left the herbalist's den, the moon was shining kindly upon them. Kimiko followed a rarely used trail up into the woods. "Let me tell you a story", Kimiko said and Obscura fastened her step to walk next to her.

When Shinozaki came to our pack, nobody really paid him much mind. He was young and strong, and obviously incredibly in love with Skadi. Amber Sun assigned Skadi to train him, knowing very well those feelings were mutual, but she also knew Skadi would not let that get in the way of training. And she did train him well. He was still not quite adult when they accompanied me on gathering rare herbs in a rather dangerous area near the mountains, we had a bad sickness spreading around and it was almost winter, so resources were scarce and this was the only place the herbs I needed were still blooming. We got there without any issue, but as I was almost done gathering, we were attacked by a group of lone male timber wolves. I am no fighter, so I had to leave it to them. Shinozaki was incredible, but quickly I realized he had started to kill them. There were 6 of them, by the time I realized he had already killed 2. His fur was blood soaked, and in that moment Skadi realized too. But there was nothing to stop him from there. She called out to him, but he was so far gone...I could see the madness radiate through his eyes, he was covered in blood and wounds and in a matter of minutes, he had killed them all. But it didn't stop there. Horrified I had to watch as he latched onto Skadi, brought her to the ground and bit her throat. I was frozen in fear, scared, helpless. I knew I didn't stand a chance and I was so afraid if I moved, he would kill me too. Skadi went limp and I feared the worst. Shinozaki let her go and stared at her. "You did enough, Shin", she whispered softly, blood trailing from her mouth and her throat, "You did good." She blinked weakly, and I saw how realization dawned into Shinozakis eyes, bringing him back from his rampage. "Sk..-Skadi...", he trembled, dropping down onto her like a withering leaf that fell from a tree in autumn. Skadi's breath was fast and ragged. "I didn't mean to..", he sobbed uncontrollably, "Skadi..." I dared to approach, slowly, but I held myself back. Skadi knew what she was doing, I felt that. She was ready to give her life for it and I couldn't disrespect that sacrifice she was willing to make. "I know", she whispered, and Shinozaki had to put his ear very close to her to understand, "You were always fighting, weren't you? All those scars on your body. You were one of them." Shinozaki froze in terror. "I knew from the moment I saw you", Skadi continued, "But I also know you aren't evil at heart. You are just unfortunate...the past curses poor souls." He looked at her, and I was taken aback from the sheer amount of love in his eyes. "I never wanted to hurt you...", he whimpered, burying his nose into her fur. I jumped over to them, and Shinozaki just sat and shivered while I stopped the bleeding and applied some herbs. It took a while but Skadi pulled through, we had to let her rest the night but the next day she was ready to travel. Shinozaki didn't say a word the entire way back, half way we were greeted by a scouting party who went out looking for us. They helped Skadi slowly walking back. Amber Sun was waiting for us, staring at us in shock. Skadi began reporting what happened, and I could see the fear in Shinozaki's eyes. I could tell he was waiting for the moment Skadi would tell everyone what he had done, that he had almost killed her.  But that moment never happened. "Shin saved my life", she ended with, "He bravely fought off the pack and made sure they wouldn't return." Shinozaki stared at her, but Skadi's eyes were so full of admiration. "I have decided that he is to become my mate."

Obscura stared at Kimiko for quite a bit, thinking about what she just told her. "She didn't tell anyone?", she finally asked. "Not a soul. Not even Amber Sun." Obscura flipped her ear. "Why are you telling me this?" "Because Amber Sun did the same for you. She knew what you have done, but also that you didn't do it out of an evil heart. I won't be around for much longer, you see. You need to know about Shinozaki, in case this ever happens again. Trust Skadi. She knows what she is doing." They reached a cave, and Obscura followed her inside. It was pitch black, and freezing cold. Moonlight faintly fell through some openings, reflecting on a tiny pond. "Drink that", Kimiko said. Obscura did as she was told, and in the blink of an eye she found herself on a meadow soaked in starlight. A faint figure appeared, with eyes she knew oh so well. "Amber Sun", Obscura gasped. The former alpha smiled softly. "You are so stubborn. Kimiko really needed to drag you all the way here to have me say it myself?" Obscura just stared at her in awe. "I...I did this to you", she mumbled. "It was my time. And my death was not your fault. It was my fate", she reassured her, and touched her nose with hers. "Believe me. You are incredibly gifted, and I know you can learn to control those powers and use them for the better of the pack. Trust yourself. I trust you." Tears streamed down Obscuras face. "I still don't understand a lot of this world and Kimiko...it's almost time for her too, isn't it?" Amber Sun nodded slowly. "One day, you will understand. And Blueberry will always be there to help you. Until you find your own special apprentice one day too, and pass down your knowledge again. I know you will be a good herbalist. The pack loves you. Take care of those who seem odd from others. They need your help just as much." With that, the vision faded to darkness, and Obscura was back in the cave. Her heart felt warm and she had such a intense feeling of...finally arriving home.

Skadi knew for a while Kieran was getting old and, eventually, he would start to look out to pick a new beta. But nothing could have prepared her for who he proposed one day. "I've chosen", he said, sitting down next to Skadi in front of her den. Skadi looked at him. "Yes?" "Him." He pointed to a gorgeous young, odd-eyed male, one of Miyukis puppies. That being said, that particular wolf was know to be incredibly odd. He seemed to have no clue how to be a wolf, he seemed spaced out and clumsy, but Skadi knew he was an incredibly precise hunter and Shinozaki had been taking him out on scouting tours for a while. He might be odd, but he was also smart, despise his mentality. "He will be trouble", Skadi sighed, "And he is hard to work with." Kieran nodded. "I know I am asking a lot of you", he said, "But Obscura had a vision about him, and a big change. Give him a chance. He will come around."
Rihito, the new beta Kieran had chosen, grew into an absolutely gorgeous young male, beloved by many she-wolves within the pack, but he always seemed distant and reserved. But then came the day of change, just as Obscura had said, but not in the way she or anyone expected.
Shinozaki had brought back a young, beautiful female wolf, her fur had the same color as Rihito's. He laid eyes on her once, and for the first time in ever, his eyes lit up, his face sparked and he suddenly was full of emotion in contrast of the cold, stoic self he usually was. "You, you were in my dreams", he whimpered, crawling on the floor before her, and the young wolf just stared at him confused, "My destiny...you're my destiny, you are." Rihito looked up, his eyes full of love, and the she-wolves face softened. "I am Destiny", she said, and touched his nose with hers.
Destiny brought a drastic change to Rihito's behaviour. He learned quickly, he started to socialize and Skadi had to admit, he was incredibly smart. But above all else, he protected Destiny like his life depended on it. He sure was quite posessive, but Skadi never felt like Destiny minded it. She came from neglect, and she sure seemed to enjoy the attention.
Nightfall came, and Obscura said in front of the herbalist den, staring at the stars. She heard Kimiko come out and join her, with a sigh the old herbalist said next to her. "Please don't go", Obscura mumbled, her eyes were blurry and far away. "You see things hidden to the eye", Kimiko said, and touched her ear gently with her nose. Obscura shook her head and turned to her, back in reality. "You will die soon", she said shivering, "I can't do this alone." Kimiko looked at her with so much content and love, Obscura could barely breathe. "You are so much more than I ever was. I will never leave you alone."
