Lunar Event #2! (March 19th-25th, 2021)

Posted 2021-03-20 23:10:24 (edited)

I know that it may suck to hear, but to everyone upset that they can't get enough LT for everything; you need to realize that sometimes you just can't have everything, and you need to strategize the things most important to you to have.

The whole sites economy relies on these things being scarce. It's not a false scarcity like I saw some people claim last event, it's a strategic one that the site devs need to put a lot of thought into. Events like this make sure some wolves are always valuable, if you go handing everything out to everyone you'll end up with a terrible economy like a certain dragon sim site.

That being said, sliiightly more LE each rollover would be nice. I don't want everything, but I would love to be able to get the base app and one or two decor items if I wanted to. Or the base app and the eye or markings app. I don't think that would wildly unbalance anything, and it would make some users a lot less stressed.

I do love this event, but I also am among the players who wish it was more possible to get one of each retiring item. I sort of wonder if it would be beneficial to remove the daily cap (allow players to collect however much LE/day they come across) but keep the cap of 100 LE at a single time. I'm not sure whether to actually suggest that, but it was a thought that I had.

Of course, I love the art and the lore that's developing, and I'm looking forward to collecting what I can and seeing what comes around next month. <: Those raccoons are adorable too, and I keep looking for them.

Was the lunar essence gain in the explore tanked? I used 5 full energy bars and got 35LE total, meaning I gained about 7 LE per 100% energy bar. That's... little. Very little.

@Barghest - Retiring of a few items every year is fine for a game.  Rarity of dozens of items that re-appear regularly is also fine.  Both can help stabilize a market.  But dozens of extremely limited items introduced and nearly immediately soft retired every single year?  That's overkill.  When there will be 12 eye apps, 6 base apps, 6 marking apps, 6 skin apps, 6 claw apps, and 6 nose apps introduced and retired every single year.  That's 42 different items every year that are (currently) nearly impossible to get all of when they're available, and not available again for extended and undefined periods of time afterwards.  That's not fun.   Especially to collectors.

Personally, I'm trying hard to do things like level up my lead to be able to actually win the battles and get LT.  I'm trying to get to a high level to get the battles that can give 2 LT rewards instead of 1.  The problem is, my now level 9 lead gets his ass kicked by level 2 enemies causing upwards of 25 points of damage per battle fairly regularly.  I easily went through 30 full-use healing salves just to go up 1 level.  My lead apparently sucks, I'm starting to hate him for it, and I really don't like the event anymore because of how impossible it is to get anywhere.  I'm already having to go into fights with a "I'm going to lose anyway, might as well say I tried" mentality because of how frequently I lose to even lower level opponents. I can't get my lead's level  up, I can't win battles, I can't get LT, and I'll never get the items I want before they're just gone no matter how much I try.  There is no fun in that.  In fact, the longer I work at these events, the less I like playing while they're happening.  If this is how everything in this game is designed to function, it's clearly not a game for me.  Which is a pity, because I have otherwise enjoyed playing.  This is just too much.  Too frustrating.  Too unrewarding.  And it's overshadowing the rest of the game right now because it's the only other thing to do on it.

I fully agree that the battling system is. Incredibly broken. A level 2 fox demolished my level 12 lead recently.
Honestly sometimes low level enemies hit SO hard that I find myself wondering if explore is improperly labeling higher level enemies as low level? When my level 12 wolf is doing 5 to 7 damage or whatever and the level 2 fox is doing like 20, that seems like an issue, to me. And I say this as a player who still has their original lead from the very first time I joined. You don't get to choose what stats your lead has when you join, it's a brand new wolf. So  yes, of course he has iffy stats, because the only way you can raise a leads stats is by battling. And battling is...... miserable.

Otherwise I agree, I think allowing players to collect more LE each day would level the event out more, I just don't think everyone should be able to get everything. But they should be able to get a choice few things and at the moment if you want the base app you can get pretty much nothing else. (I got the base app and had enough LT for one 30LT decor item last time, i believe.)

Also, honestly, some variation in explore interactions would be nice. I know that different choices give you different flavor text in an encounter, and Maybe a non event item, but once it feels like no matter what I click I'm just getting 1 LT for doing it and I have to click so MUCH, I'm just clicking whatever gets me through explore faster so I can move on with my day. kjjhghjjgg

Now that I had time to play for a while, I want to say that I LOVE this event, and the update right before is a huge improvement!

I like that the battles have more hints about what's good to do that you can find by trial and error, and the buff to healing salves was EXCELLENT. Now I feel like I can progress in the dream world at a comfortable pace instead of worrying about sacrificing SC/healing salves just to scrounge by, and the fact that they aren't getting cleaned out of the TC with prices through the roof means others are thinking the same thing.

As for how much essence/LT is available? If there's a hard cap that is too low it will make the hardcore / completionist players mad that they can't get what they want. If there's no cap, it will be discouraging to the casual players who get blown out of the water immediately when others can dunk mountains of guarana and get 1000s of tears a day.

It's a delicate balance and I think it's been handled really well here. Selene and the related apps are scarce enough to be valuable but able to be obtained with time and effort. It's unfortunate for people who can't check in at multiple times a day, but that's kind of how this game is structured so it's not surprising. If you can't get everything you want you can buy it from others, which I think is a fair way of handling it. Of course there can be tweaks here and there, but I've been really happy with it so far!

I'm really excited to see what is next!

I agree, battling, even with the update, is very inconsistent and often feels like the enemies are higher level than indicated.  I just hope they'll come up with something to make things just a little bit ore achievable.  Even just raising the LE cap to 150 or 200 a day would make a world of difference, or maybe make a few more options that give more than 1 LT in any given step.  Because I agree, the change is mostly the flavor text right now.  And that gets a bit dull after a while.

Right now, based on how many LT I got last event, and how many I predict to get this one based on that, I'm expecting I can get 1 base app, 1 marking app, and 1 eye app every cycle (2 events).  Which means get an eye app if I like it, and hope to high heaven that I don't like the second round one better, because it'll be out of my reach if I want the marking app.  And I know there's always the player market, but even the cheaper apps (Claws/skin/nose) are around 50 - 80 GC in the trading center right now, both eye apps are over 100 GC, the marking app over 150 GC, and the base app closer to 300 GB, and they'll only get more expensive from there because they'll retire.  Having to buy generally $25+ worth of GC per app just to get them from other players because the game is set to prevent you getting it yourself doesn't exactly seem like a good event balance to me, especially with 42 apps released per year.  Good for the game selling the GC, maybe, if people are willing to actually buy it for just that.  But I feel more like it'll drive people off than make them want to keep going for it.  Either way, I do hope to see some changes to it as things go along.   There's some decor I'd absolutely love to get, but I can't if i want any apps.  And I really want all the apps for my collection. I just can't get them myself and can't afford to buy them.  It's vexing.

I, too, am frustrated by how quickly the applicators retire as well as their high price. High price is fine if we had more time to earn them. Being available for only a week is fine if we could afford to buy more than a single item. High price + quick retirement feels like a mean-spirited joke.

Saving up to buy a base took me grinding two events without buying anything else from the shop. I used irl dollars to buy 40 gc for guarana, even, because I don't think I could have gotten 500 LT within two months otherwise. So much time and energy all for one item, and the eye/marking applicators are unobtainable before they cycle out because of the low lunar tear drop rate unless I'm incredibly lucky or buy more guarana... feels bad, man. I get that rarity is super important in a breeding game, so I understand the motivation for the choices wolvden has made, but making one wolf a pretty color shouldn't feel this unfun.

Adding more ways to earn LT/essence would help. Maybe foraging can bring some back, random event pop-up like neopets, fishing snags a special lunar fish that gives LT, etc. Activities that are less dependent on the explore day/night cycle would reduce irl clock anxiety for players who have a life outside of wolvden.

I agree with 🕸️Websteak🥩 and Barghest-  I think the number of LE is just right. Too many and items wouldn't be valuable. You shouldn't be able to get everything. You have to choose what is most important to you. And they did say on certain celestial events all the previous ones would be available so it's not like you will never have the chance to get them again. For anyone who has played Lioden it's very similar. I'm more than happy I was able to get one base and eye app from last one and will do the same this one. Yes I'd like all the decor too, but that's my choice. I value base apps more.

Thank you for the fix on the healing salves and battle system. My level 20 is no longer losing to level 2 or 5. I still dont enjoy the fights as much as the other interactions, but it's ok. And I am not using 3-4 salves for every fight like on the last. Honestly love the shorter 7 day length of this event way more than month long ones. I like immediate gratification and being able to buy whatever I want as soon as I have enough currency rather than waiting until tiers open is so much better

Great job  guys. And that Selene base is so pretty. I cant wait to see what the next one is.
