Maybe something like overgrown fur, resulting in fluffier wolves who do better in colder conditions?

For the Primal wolf im thinking something like this

I feel like dire-wolves are very... overdone. They're not even in the same genus as wolves.

(also hyenas aren't canines so as much as I love them, I doubt there'd be a hyena-wolf hybrid. not that Wolvden is realistic but still I doubt it)

My proposed primal-like, large canine mutation/hybrid would be Xenocyon. They're the ancestors of what evolved into dholes and African Wild Dogs, but they're still in the Canis genus. They ranged across most of the world. 

Something like Xenocyon Cuon, a variant with a warm dhole-like base and tell-tale fluff. As well as Xenocyon Lycaon with round ears and a splotchy AWD-like base.

I've given thought to this before if you can't tell.

So the Wolf Hyena (Wyena) Would maybe look like this?
