Far away, hidden in the deep depths of the mountains, lived a wolf pack by the name of Moonhaven. They were deeply spiritual and held strong to their beilefs. Every ceremony they held was related to the moon in some way or another. Their leader, Tsukudo, was rumored to have been birthed from the moon itself. Tsukudo was a fair and just leader, a large silvery blue wolf with striking amber eyes. He had canines that could be seen even when his mouth was closed. Moonhaven's wolves respected him deeply as if he were a deity rather than just a leader. Tsukudo had a mate, Setako, a beautiful light blue wolf with yellow eyes who he would later have two children with. Their son, Koyaso, given the title "Lord of The Stars" and their daughter, Koyama, given the title "Mother of The Stars". But the peace and tranquility that Moonhaven had maintained for so long would soon be over. From the south, down into the deepest depths of the woods, lived a rival pack by the name of Ravenmire. These wolves lived in the shadows and only struck at night, when the moon had vanished completely from the sky. One such night however, the moon was at it's fullest and Ravenmire lead an assault on Moonhaven. Tsukudo fought with Ravenmire's leader, Shideki. The two wolves carved massive scars within the mountainside from their battle. Tsukudo soon realized why Ravenmire had decided to attack on this night. Just as he claimed victory over Shideki's dead body, the moon disappeared from the sky behind a shadow. From the darkness, Shideki's body rose again, rebirthed into the shadows of the forest. He and his wolves retreated but promised they would be back again.

When Tsukudo returned to Moonhaven, he found that most of his pack members were still alive. All but one, Setako. She had died protecting her children.

As Koyama and Koyaso grew up, they both lived two very different lives. Koyaso was the oldest, so naturally, he was the heir to Moonhaven. Koyama on the other hand, was second born and while she was still Tsukudo's daughter, the destiny to be leader of Moonhaven was not hers to live. Instead, she spent her puppyhood with her best friend, Ayame. The two would venture up the mountain side almost everyday while Koyaso spent his days training with Tsukudo and other high ranks in Moonhaven. To say he was jealous was an understatement. But Koyaso did not have time to be jealous of his sister as on the very night before their crowning as heir's, Ravenmire lead another attack on the mountain pack.

°˖✧ Koyama sat near the far end of the rock path that lead up to her father's cave. The moon was shining brightly from high above but the moonlight spread across the clearing as if it was looming closer. The heir's daughter shivered in the light, feeling it's touch cover her blue pelt. She looked up to the rock that jutted out from the mountainside. She could imagine her father's image standing tall on it, boldly giving commands to the Moonhaven packmates. With a sigh, she turned her head away. Her one day taking his place as leader was not her destiny, it was Koyaso's. Just before she got to her paws, she heard a thundering echo from the ridge below the clearing. Several other wolves around her also heard this sound, their heads all turning to gaze over. Suddenly, an explosion of wolves flooded into the clearing. Most of their pelts are dark in color and they were hard to see in the darkness. Koyama quickly got to her paws as several of the wolves seemed to be heading straight for her. Their efforts to reach her were foiled as her packmates came rushing to her aid. Before she knew it, the whole clearing was in the heat of battle. Before any one else could attack her, Koyama turned and made her way up the rock path. Just as she was coming up to the mouth of the cave, she saw her father quickly dash out of the den and jump down into the fray. Moments after, Koyaso came running out as well.

"What happened?" Koyaso growled, his silvery pelt shining brightly in the moonlight.

"Ravenmire! They- They came from no where! From up the mountain!" Koyama said in a hurry. Koyaso's golden eyes scanned the clearing below them before running off with a snarl. "Wait Koyaso!" The blue wolf called out but her brother disappeared into the battle below them. Before Koyama could chase after him, she heard a low growl come up from behind her. She whipped around and saw a massive, black wolf stalking toward her. His piercing red eyes making her freeze. It was Shideki. The pitch black wolf that Koyama had only heard in tales. Her mind raced one what to do. She couldn't win this fight!

"Daughter of the Moon. And Mother of the Stars."

His voice was chilling. Koyama could see his shiny, white teeth in the moonlight. They were the only thing on him that wasn't black. That and his eyes. They were a bight scarlet. In their depths, Koyama could see herself, cowering down to his figure.

Shideki took one final step forward before lunging his head forward to sink his fangs into Koyama's neck. It happened so fast. She felt the rush of air come for her and braced herself for the pain but there was nothing. In a flash, her friend, Ayame had sunk her own teeth into Shideki's side. The light brown wolf managed to push Shideki away from the heir but could not get away herself. Before Ayame could jump away, the black wolf's jaws clamped down on her forearm. With a sharp yelp, Ayame let let go and was thrown away from Shideki's side. She tumbled to Koyama's side.

"Ayame!" The blue wolf came down to her side. She could see the gash in Ayame's leg. The blood that oozed out of it matched the color of Shideki's eyes.

"Do not interfere." He growled, regaining his stance.

Ayame's green eyes flashed to his, "I'll shred your ears, mongrel." Her comment made the black wolf snarl and start his advance toward the two. Koyama stepped in front of Ayame but before he could attack her again, there was a shout from behind Shideki.

"Shideki, Wolf of the Moonless Night." It was her father, Tsukudo. She had never been so relieved to hear his voice. "Turn to face me, coward!" The silvery wolf barked.

Slowly, he did just that. There was a new rage in Shideki's eyes. Without speaking, he lunged himself toward Tsukudo, jaws open wide. But Tsukudo braced himself and dove forward to met Shideki before he could get a grip on him. He rammed his back into Shideki's neck, sending him flying into the side of his den. The stone structure began to crumble and there was a large crack where the dark wolf hit it. Her father landed gracefully while Shideki began to stand again. Without looking away, Tsukuso spoke again, "Ayame, take Koyama down to the river." His voice was surprisingly calm. But Koyama could see a hint of uncertainty in his yellow eyes.

"Yes Tsukudo! Come on Koyama." Ayame said immediately and began to beckon Koyama away.

"Wait! I don't-" The blue wolf began to say but was cut off by Shideki attacking her father again. This time, Tsukudo only dodged his attack. Finally, Koyama was pushed away by Ayame. The two wolves carefully paced down the stone path, now splattered with blood. Ayame stayed on the outside while Koyama treaded beside the stone wall. Her yellow eyes peered over Ayame's fur as she quickly moved along. She searched for her brother, but couldn't see his silvery pelt anywhere. There were so many wolves.

The pair raced along the clearing, avoiding as many wolves as possible. Ayame, despite limping, was keeping up well with Koyama. They both came to a stop at the top of the ridge. Nothing but tall, skinny trees and rocks were below. It was somewhere Koyama had never been before. "We can't." She whispered but then repeated herself louder to Ayame.

Ayame opened her mouth to demand Koyama down but before she could speak, a wolf escaped from the fray and slammed into her side. Ayame tumbled over and pushed her injured arm out to try and defend herself but the opposing wolf only bit down on it. She snarled in both pain and irritation. Koyama was pushed over as well. Her hindlegs were now out of the clearing, standing in the empty darkness of the woods. The wolf shook it's head with Ayame still in it's jaws only stopping to throw her to the side. But the wolf kept his attention on Ayame.

"Run Koyama! Go down to the river! Quickly! She shouted from the ground, there was no way she could stand right now. Koyama could see the desperation and fear in her eyes.

Koyama took a step forward to her friend. Her only friend. Her eyebrows were furrowed up in worry.

"No! Leave me dammit! Go!" Ayame snarled this time to her, clearly upset that she wasn't listening. She didn't get to say anything else before the wolf above her brought his jaws down to her side.

                                                       *                                                *                                                *

The darkness in the ridge below was ever consuming. As Koyama raced down to the river, she could feel it's grasp on her pelt. She ran as fast as she could but it was still so hard to get away. The echoing sounds of battle faded away behind her as she quickly approached the roaring river. As the blue pelted wolf came to the base of the mountain, she lost her footing and tumbled the rest of the way down. She landed awkwardly in the shallow end of the river but was otherwise alright. While she caught her breath, her yellow eyes drifted up from which she just came. The mountain looked serene, as if there were no soul alive on it. All the fighting and bloodshed from which she just escaped from was gone now. She was alone down here.

Koyama waited. She waited for what felt like days for Ayame to join her at the river but she never came. Her friend was so strong! There was no way she wouldn't be here by now. She was tired of waiting and started her way back to the mountain but the sudden rumbling of earth stopped her in her tracks. The sound was coming from up the mountain, from Moonhaven. Before she had time to react, a bright beam of blue light shot up from the very top of the mountain. It extended on up into the sky and even beyond that. Then Koyama could feel a rush of energy surge through her body. It was so immense that she doubled over in pain, gasping for breath. She could feel so many claws pulling her away, as if they were preventing her from traveling back up the mountain. But she fought the feeling for as long as she could before it became too unbearable. Just when she had given up, the pain began to melt away. It felt like a rush of cold water running down her legs and paws. Though there was nothing of the sort on her. When the blue wolf looked back up to Moonhaven, the beam of light had vanished and she felt different. Different and alone. The comfort that her family was just up the mountain was gone. She could not feel their presence anymore. And the feeling of security that her home would be defended and safe was long gone. There was nothing on the top of that mountain now. She knew this.

Before she left her homeland, Koyama took one last look at the mountain of Moonhaven. The shadowy fog of the woods below it had vanished as well. As she turned away, a howling wind blew through the towering trees and echoed on throughout the woods. A howling echo that the whole forest heard.

After Koyama left her old home of Moonhaven she met Takeda, a marengo colored male who instantly caught her eye. She was surprised to find out that he had never heard of Moonhaven, or her father for that matter. Takeda left his old pack to start his own somewhere far away.

The First Spring

Koyama and Takeda settled down in the deciduous forest and shortly after became mates. Koyama named the pack Nightvale. While they were claiming this land, they met a black wolf whose markings resembled that of a bear. She said her name was Urisdae. She was traveling with her young puppy named Ideki when the two were separated. Unfortunately, Ideki was never found and Urisdae would join Nightvale as it's first member.

Before Urisdae had met Koyama and Takeda however, she met a small group of wolves who had all lost their homes as well. She took the two to met them.

Kohaku - a glaucous, scatterbrained male who loved to explore. He was the older brother of Sango.

Ryotsume - a birch, sneaky male who was the "leader" of the small group. He was knowledgeable in many things, from hunting to herbs.

Toshiko - a gold lighter, dutiful female who was quick witted and a fast learner.

Sasaki - an ashen, capable female who was very fast and agile.

Akiyoshi - a snow, humble male who was rather quiet, but extremely kind.

Sango - a white, keen female who was eager to join Nightvale. She was Kohaku's younger sister.

Ryotsume told Koyama that he had met her father when he was just a puppy but hadn't seen him since. So far no one had recalled any memory of Moonhaven or it's members.

The small group of wolves joined Nightvale. All of their old packs had been disbanded. Ryotsume told them that there was a pack of wolves that wandered the land and destroyed territory and killed prey. Packs like Akiyoshi's had been forced to disband due to lack of food. Sango's and Kohaku's had just been taken over and they fled to find a safer home. Koyama wondered whether or not the pack could have been Ravenmire, or what was left of them. But she did not tell any of them about the dark wolves.

Toshiko, Sasaki, Akiyoshi, Sango, and Takeda all formed the hunting party known as Swiftstalkers. Ryotsume became the herbalist. Urisdae became a pupsitter, which would be needed soon because Koyama was pregnant.

                                      __________________________________________________________________________

Koyama's first litter was born in the spring, though summer was quickly approaching. She had two daughters. Kimiko, the oldest, and Naomi, the youngest. Naomi was very small when she was born and Ryotsume feared she wouldn't make it but she pulled through the night and quickly became healthy.
