Year 5

Fifth Spring [2020 Dec 31 - 2021 Jan 5] Dawn breeze after storm came to the pack a stranger, a wanderer, mother of a single beloved pup. It was a young pack, then -- they were all young packs, then. But her single child was a pup of surpassing beauty, and on that basis she was welcome with glad cries. As scout and finisher, she won strength into her bones, and she was elevated for that. She lived a long life, full and good, and she died old and well-pleased on the first day of spring. Though she was not born to us, her descendants walk these lands today.

Fifth Summer [2021 Jan 6 - Jan 11]

Fifth Autumn [2021 Jan 12 - Jan 17]

Fifth Winter [2021 Jan 18 - Jan 23]

Year 6

Sixth Spring [2021 Jan 24 - Jan 29] Keen-eyed, precise, trampled grass scouted in her earlier days and dealt medicine in her later ones. We were her first pack -- she came to us. Though she had two litters, all of the first died without leaving blood in our lines, and the second have all passed on to other packs. She died on the first day of spring.

Sixth Summer [2021 Jan 30 - Feb 4]

Sixth Autumn [2021 Feb 5 - Feb 10] -- on the second to last day, established the lore and the law

Sixth Winter [2021 Feb 11 - Feb 16]

Year 8

Eighth Spring [2021 Mar 13 - Mar 18]

3/17, give aging crystals to boar blood and lichen.

3/18, the current set of pups will hit adulthood and form the checkerspot party. also, chlorargyrite will go into heat and be bred to acorns.

Eighth Summer [2021 Mar 19 - Mar 24] -- Burning leaves at dusk, the founding matriarch of the Kodaway, followed her mate into death at the beginning of summer. Having discharged her duty to see her pack established in the northern regions, she left the leadership of her people to her eldest daughter in a time of plenty. Her name was snowdrop blossoms.

She'd always known she wouldn't be her mother's heir. She would not be a link in the venerated chain of leaders and mothers. Child of her mother's youth, child of love but not wisdom, that she was, she knew her mother would have other children, later, when the canny old bitch had had a chance to hone herself and her bloodline to the greatest perfection that could be achieved in a lifetime. Their land was rich and full of life, but that didn't make it any less hard or unforgiving. It required a certain striving for strength, a bettering of each generation, and that meant that the getting of pups and heirs was a matter for strong blood. The love was saved for raising them.

Snowdrop blossoms accepted this without shame or regret. Strong her blood wasn't, but the love that raised her had been. Even if she would never inherit her mother's pack, she had been born to the days of its founding, the first litter raised in the redwood den, and she'd grown up regarded with hope, with delight. Her and her sister had been the future's promise, stumbling in on clumsy paws. Her sister was long gone, now, given to another pack in an exchange of daughters. What had become of her, no one knew; she'd left her new pack eventually, and she'd been gone so long that even her name was forgotten. The foster-sister for which she'd been exchanged was kind and mild and of even weaker blood than snowdrop blossoms herself. She kept her place in the pack by the sentiment of her birth alone. The two of them had a legacy, but strength was not it.

So she'd known that while she had nothing of the strength of her mother's later children, no inheritance of her mother's throne, she was not nothing to the pack. Her mother -- wise and canny as she was now -- loved snowdrop's father with the helplessness of a yearling, and someday soon snowdrop blossoms would have full-siblings young enough to be her own pups who would inherit more than she ever would. That would be tribute enough to the worth of snowdrop's blood.

But there was one trick. One key. "Soon" did not mean "soon enough."

Snowdrop blossom's mother was old. Snowdrop herself wasn't much younger, but her mother's muzzle was growing grey and her joints stiff. She still had years in her, still had time for a last litter or two if she timed things right, but her last litter of pups would (in all likelihood) reach adulthood only after their mother was dead on the ground. Those pups wouldn't be ready to inherit. Could a pack thrive on even the strongest blood if the blood's carrier was young and unready?

So there would need to be an... interim. Someone to carry the pack for a short time only, bearing no young, only there to keep the trail open for her mother's true heir.

Snowdrop blossoms would have no children. There was no room for weak blood in her mother's pack, and she'd respect that, even after her mother's death.

But maybe she could still leave a legacy. Maybe, she could still have a way to stand among the mothers, her kin and her birthright, and be remembered.

3/19, burning leaves will join the matriarchs and snowdrop will take her place. the lunar realm will return. chlorargyrite becomes the herbalist.

3/20, loosestrife will go into her last heat and be bred to the outside stud Anemone.

3/21, loosestrife enters her twilight year.

3/22, chlorargyrite's pups will be born.

3/24, loosestrife's pups will be born.

Eighth Autumn [2021 Mar 25 - Mar 30]

3/26, the lunar realm will leave conjunction.

3/30, ice-dried cache will become a prime, volcanic springs will become a scout, and glacial wind will fill the opening in the swallowtail party.

Eighth Winter [2021 Mar 31 - Apr 5] Leaves in a dry creekbed was the first foster-daughter of the founding matriarch; she'd been traded for the matriarch's daughter, and born of the earliest days of this land, she was beautiful but weak. Accordingly, she left us no blood, but all the days of her life she tended our children faithfully. She died in the middle of winter when the blizzards of the north became too much for her old bones to bear.

4/3, fennel's last litter

Year 9

Ninth Spring [2021 Apr 6 - Apr 11] At the beginning of spring, purple loosestrife flower and ice-dried cache in wet leaves left us. They were beloved foster-daughters of the first matriarch, strong and beautiful, and their offspring stood - and may yet stand - among the pack.

4/10?, fennel will become a prime, acorns will become a scout, and tanuki will fill the opening in the swallowtail party.

4/11 chlorargyrite goes into heat, to be bred by acorns.

Ninth Summer [2021 Apr 12 - Apr 17] As with her mother before her, snowdrop blossoms, second matriarch of the Kodaway, left her people behind at the beginning of summer. Though she bore no pups, she was a good regent while her younger sister grew to be her mother's proper heir. She will be remembered.

4/12, snowdrops will join the matriarchs and rainstorm in autumn will take her place. no one yet will fill the opening in the checkerspot party.

4/15, chlorargyrite's most recent litter will reach adulthood. dogwood petals will fill the opening in the checkerspot party.

4/16, the lunar realm will return to conjunction.

Ninth Autumn [2021 Apr 18 - Apr 23]

4/18, loosestrife's last litter will reach adulthood. storm-killed hawk and maple seeds will remain.

Ninth Winter [2021 Apr 24 - Apr 29]

4/28, chlorargyrite's litter will reach adulthood. puma fur in a thorn bush will remain
