Starting to dislike this game

Posted 2020-10-06 13:00:57

I highly recommend the Grouse House guides. They are really helpful for people who want to understand the game. Admittedly, I lost so many puppies in beta testing (and it was tweaked quite a few times) because I thought pupsitters were useless (as in LD you can keep a cub unprotected and most times they will live). I was so wrong. This game is definitely not made for mass breeding unless you just have a huge pack to be honest.

Now on the economy. This game has only been officially out for a couple weeks. It takes time to establish, and just because this game is finished enough for release that doesn't mean it is finished altogether. We already have a nice starting roster of encounters in explore, but likely more will be added (which also explains why NBWs are more common than NCLs right now). More explore encounters equal more opportunities to gain SC. Events also haven't been implemented yet. When they come around that will also give more SC opportunities. (Though to be honest I don't think SC will ever carry the same amount as SB). The economy takes time to establish and there is an unbalanced amount of GC due to it being a reward for getting EA. When official release comes through, where people don't get GC with their accounts I feel it with START to settle down then.

Give it time. I found snake by doing quest is best way to get sc.

I don't expect it to be like Lioden at all. It's a different game made by the same developers, in the same style, but it is not the same game.

That said... I feel like sc are too hard to get. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I understand that it is early access but your paid-for currency even in the beginning should not be more common and worth less than your in-game currency. The main currency for the game should be the one you earn while exploring/doing things. There's things in Raccon's shop some of us won't be able to buy for weeks or months and that just seems counter-intuitive. Doesn't that shop exist to make life easier? Sell stuff, buy stuff. Sc is hard to come  by but by all means, allow me to spend it on this package that ends up being worth less than using the trading system. You would have to trade in 50 feathers just to buy a toy bundle to get you 2-3 feathers.

That's not how an economy should work, imo. Perhaps it's to battle inflation, and over time people will be able to save, but it's an incredibly harsh grind.

Editing to add: some of the snake quests are very hard (or seemingly impossible) to do in 1 day as well. At least, they're very hard for users who are just starting the game. 5 successful hunts in a day? My kids fail most of the time.

The problem I'm having is the rate of illness. My wolves get sick faster than I can cure them. I can employ all of the strategy in the world and in the end it doesn't matter. I can read all of the guides but it's all up to a roll of the dice. Players get punished too often for just playing. My one hunting party is at 60% synergy and still I get an open wound immediately today. On a critter trail that I didn't even get prey on. I lost to what? A rabbit? And that somehow trashed ALL of the wolf's HP? Even in explore, I'm level 9 and I just lost to a level 1 wolf when I was almost fully healthy. Then I have to grind up my HP again. My first breeding ever other than the quest I contracted Pox. The 2nd day illness was live I contracted a disease from scouting, 1 from breeding, and 2 from hunting. I guess I could remedy this by not doing those activities but then why am I playing?

My snake wants 8 successful hunts. I'll be lucky to finish it. I got it yesterday and only got 2 from yesterday. I didn't expect it to be like lioden but I didn't want the difficulty to be based on whether the dice gods are with you on a given day. Everything is chance. I'm trying to see if multiple illnesses can be on a wolf at once. Because if not I'm going to stop treating lesser ones that don't impact gameplay as much just to avoid getting something worse.

I will say this, I feel like the devs had no other idea how to not make this lioden with wolves other than "hard, harder, impossible." I know they worked hard on the game, and it is a pretty game, but I totally get everyone's frustrations! The devs wanted this game to be a bit more challenging and attentive than lioden, which is fair, but I do feel like they overshot and rather than making it a slightly more challenging but highly rewarding game they made it a "give us money, log in, and get beat up by every bad RNG roll possible until your numb!" It IS an unecessarily punishing game and if they don't balance this out and fix it, they are going to lose A LOT of players. Majority of LD players are casual players who don't have the ability to be on a lot and grind, so with how punishing Wolvden is, even if you do play all day, no WAY can you be a casual player. The dev team really shot themselves in the foot with this one.

honestly yeah. illnesses do come embarrassingly abundantly when you get up to a certain level. it just makes you want to do nothing at all, considering literally everything has a chance of making you or your pack sick. its a cool mechanic but god did they really have to make it so annoying?

When you get an illness, it should be like, "oh no, I need to fix this," not, "are you kidding me, i've gotten sick again?"

i'm sure it will be fixed soon. i hope so!

I've only gotten a few illnesses so far, but I've been able to cure them quite quickly because I send my herbalist out to forage A LOT. Every chance I get, I send her out. Then, when I get enough herbs, I trade in extra ones for any that I'm missing out of a cure I have the most herbs for. Make cures even when you don't have any sick wolves. Even if you are doing this and are still having a problem, consider downgrading your pack. Some of y'all have very large packs and that...might be part of the problem. You may be taking on more than you can handle.

I, personally, haven't been having too much of a problem with the gameplay. I can't say anything about the economy since I'm not very good with that. My gameplay style has been quite casual and I've pretty much been just earning money with the quests and a little from explore and so far I've been able to afford 12 GC and...4(?) territory slots. About 1k worth of stuff, which I think is pretty moderate. Idk how this will effect me long-term (cuz prices rise and all that) but so far, speaking as a casual, it's been ok.

at some point it does get out of hand. the herbs you get are pure luck and sometimes you can't afford the right herbs. its less about the illness mechanic and more about how annoyingly frequent it is, i think. i've heard from a couple people that theyre burning through every medicine they get. :/ getting sick or injured every time you wanna do stuff which should be fun makes you want to straight up not explore or battle or hunt or breed or... play the game.

How has the game improved from then to now? I'm new to the game, I've only played for... maybe a week. And now I'm a bit worried about if I should continue to play, as I've already invested some money into it. Have the problems mention here gotten any better since then?

I stopped playing for a few months due to IRL reasons, and recently came back. A lot of rebalancing has been done—my biggest issue was combat being unbalanced, and now I really enjoy it. The Healing Salves were rebalanced so they give more HP back, so I don’t need to use three just to get HP back up. And the economy is a lot better than when the site first started, thanks to the fishing game and also just more players (when OP posted it was around the time the game was early access only, so there were a limited number of players and also a more limited knowledge base).

I really enjoy it in a way I didn’t then. Not every game is for everyone, though. I would advise sticking with it for a bit and drawing your own conclusions.
