Selling art for USD - question

Selling art for USD - question

Hi!

I was thinking on opening USD commissions for a while now. I have one huge issue with that though. I'm assuming that most people here live in US. I, on the other side, live in Central Europe, therefore receiving money from abroad buyers through Paypal might be a little bit... complicated. I am certain that there is some sort of fee for similar payments (can somebody tell me how much is that fee? I've found inconsistent information in different sources).

In this case I have a question (mostly from artist that live outside the US) - what would you do if you were me? I really want to open commissions but I'm confused when it comes to dealing with the fee. Should I just reduce my prices (the client wouldn't need to pay extra then) or something else? Does anybody have experience in that field? I would be very grateful for any tips!

Ive personally not had much luck selling coms, but ive sold a few. Just a few suggestions:

Either be willing to waive off the fee, or include it in your prices--paypal does not allow you to ask your buyers to pay the fees. I know alot of artists ask this of their commissioners but can be a major turnoff if you ask for commissioners to pay fees. [Honestly, i found that a decent few commissioners will include extra to cover part/full fees.]

The paypal fee varies on how much you are charging, there a flat rate + extra depending on how much the commissions worth.

Always make sure your buyers pay as Goods and Services + no address needed. It covers you and the buyer incase of issues.

I'm in Australia so here it's AUD, but I still take payment in USD because it's generally the most common currency for digital art sales (on English sites and such). When you send it to your attached bank, paypal automatically converts it into your set main currency before depositing it. So even though I'm receiving USD, if I want to put it into my bank it just converts it to AUD for me before sending it. There are minor fees that Paypal takes from conversions, it's nothing major for AUD but double check what it would be for you just so you are aware of it.

As the above user said, it must be sent through Goods and Services to cover you and the buyer, and you can't ask for the buyer to pay the fee. I used to charge a little extra on my prices so it covers the fee for both the G&S transaction and the conversion fee before depositing it.
