The Portum Reach Pack (Lore Thread)

The Portum Reach Pack--often referred to as the Reach by its members--is a pack of wolves from diverse origins residing in the grasslands. It was founded by a marengo wolf known as Inna. Inna, though young, yearned to help others. A pack she arose from the ground-up, existing to be a safe haven for wolves who may need it for various reasons. Some wolves wish for a purpose in life, so she gives them a purpose. Some wolves are unable to take care of themselves, so she takes care of them.

The Reach are a family. They always have eachother's backs and look out for one-another. It doesn't matter who you were in the past, it matters who you strive to be in the future.

Below is an explanation of the Portum Reach Pack's hierarchy and laws.
It's important to maintain organization and enforce rules.

Leader
The highest role, only given by being an heir at the current Leader's choice. Worthiness of becoming a Leader can include physical abilities, social abilities, and political abilities. The leader must be obeyed at all costs, unless the pack agrees their discretion puts the pack at risk. Their job is to guide the pack to success and leave behind a notable legacy. They make all of the major decisions. Leaders tend to sleep in their own den with any Young they have and whoever they wish to bring with them. The leader can be any wolf above the age of 1.

Scout
One of 4 working roles, assigned by the Leader. A wolf is recommended to become a Scout if they excel in speed and agility or if they work best alone. Scouts are responsible for discovering new territory and ensuring newly discovered land is safe for exploration. Scouts tend to sleep with the other working adults. A Scout can be any wolf above the age of 1. There can only be 2 Scouts at a time.

Hunter
One of 4 working roles, assigned by the Leader. A wolf is recommended to become a Scout if their physical abilities excel and they work well with other wolves. Hunters are responsible for providing the pack with food by hunting. Hunters are grouped into parties according to how well they work together. Trial and error can happen before Hunters find their perfect hunting partners. Hunters tend to sleep with the other working adults. A Hunter can be any wolf above the age of 1.

Herbalist
One of 4 working roles, assigned by the Leader. A wolf is recommended to become an Herbalist if they have an interest in medicinal and herbal knowledge. Herbalists are responsible for discovering new ways to produce medicine and utilize the uses of herbs. The Herbalist is usually looked to when someone is injured or sick. Herbalists tend to sleep with the other working adults. An Herbalist can be any wolf above the age of 1.

Pupsitter
One of 3 working roles, assigned by the Leader. A wolf is recommended to become a Pupsitter if they excel in social skills and like children. Pupsitters are entrusted to watch over the pack's Young and protect them from danger when their parents aren't around. Pupsitters tend to sleep in their own den near the Leader's with any Young within the pack. A Pupsitter can be any wolf above the age of 1.

Young
Anyone under 1 year old. Young are not to stray far from the main camp and are free of dedicated responsibilities. They will typically spend most of their time with either their parents or their designated Pupsitters. As Young age, they may quickly know what role they wish to take when they become old enough and choose to train in their chosen role to get a head start, in which they will be called Novices. Otherwise, Young will be given a role based on their attributes when the time comes, or they may choose not to take a role if they find they do not fit in any. After the age of 1, wolves are no longer considered Young.

The Portum Reach Pack has a set of laws they abide to. Punishment for breaking these laws can range anywhere from verbal discipline to exile.

  1. The Leader eats first, followed by Young, then working adults, then everyone else.
  2. Young are not to be harmed or threatened. Threatening or harming Young is severely punishable, depending on severity.
  3. The pack is your family. You don't have to get along with everyone, but everyone should be treated fairly.
  4. Everyone is worthy of a chance to be part of the pack. It doesn't matter who they were in the past, it matters who they strive to be in the future.
  5. It's considered polite to use titles when addressing or referring to someone. For example, a Hunter named Antal would be referred to Hunter Antal. Young are inclusive of this to encourage good manners. For example, Young Valdez.
  6. Visitors are welcome within the pack, but if they show to be a threat, they must be immediately removed from the area.

Below is an explanation of the culture and traditions of the Portum Reach Pack.

Welcoming a new member
When a new member joins the pack, current members are expected to introduce themselves in their own time. The next morning, when the pack eats, typically the new member is permitted to be the first working adult to eat as a formal welcome into the pack. A new member will typically receive a role within 3 days after their traits are evaluated.

Coming of Age
When a Young reaches a year old, they are considered an adult. Typically, packmates will bring various gifts such as small toys. Gifts such as flowers and food are considered more intimate gifts and typically are given by loved ones. At the end of the day, when the sun sets, the entire pack will have a small get-together to celebrate the new adult. At the end, when the pack is ready to sleep, they end the night with a howling chorus of joy.

Funeral
When the living departs from the pack, the body, if possible, is taken to the immediate family. If the deceased had no living family, the next choice is their closest friends. If neither applies, the body is taken to the Leader. That night, a funeral is held for the deceased. The body is decorated with flowers by the Scouts, and the Hunters bring a small animal to ensure the deceased is fed on their way to the heavens. The entire pack then gathers around the body and share their favorite memories of the deceased. Loved ones may leave a gift for the deceased to bring to the heavens with them. The Leader then shares a speech to wish the deceased a safe arrival to the heavens before the pack shares a mournful howl. The deceased's loved ones will share their final night by sleeping outside with the body. If there are no loved ones present, the Leader will sleep outside with the body. At sunrise, the body is buried with any gifts given as well as the food the Hunters had brought the deceased.

Religion
The pack, while generally believing in some sort of heaven, is not strictly religious. Some wolves believe in various versions of what may be an afterlife while others believe there is nothing after death. No law declares that pack members must be religious, but it's deeply frowned upon and considered cruel to suggest the lack of an afterlife during funerals. Each pack member may have varying descriptions on what they believe may come after death.

The Reach's Anniversary
On the first day of Spring, the pack celebrates a new year of existence. Throughout the day, pack members celebrate eachother by bringing all sorts of small gifts to those they find contribute to the pack in some way. In the late afternoon, the pack comes together and shares their favorite memories within the pack and share ideas they have that may benefit the pack for the Leader to take into consideration. The pack has a feast where there is no restriction on who eats first and how much is eaten, and when night comes, the pack share a chorus of howls to wish the pack a long existence beyond their own generation.

Search of Fatum
Meaning "Search of Destiny," the majority of pups born within the pack are encouraged to seek lives in other packs to ensure there is enough room for outsiders who may need the pack. This also ensures the pack bloodline remains diverse and free of things such as inbreeding. Some pups born within the pack, especially the Leader's Young, may grow up part of the pack if it's decided that the pup would be a very useful worker for the pack.
