Choose Your Adventure! (Lead-A-Pack)

Choose Your Adventure! (Lead-A-Pack)
Posted 2024-03-12 15:16:58 (edited)
This is a choose-your-own adventure game! It's pretty straightforward, read the little blurb, make a choice, and hope it's the right one! I'll be moving on to the next 'scene' once I get a few choices. Over the course of this I'll be using various characters from my pack to interact with, if you'd like your wolves (Wolvden or OC is fine), or another woodland wildlife character (Elk, Raccoon, Grizzly, etc.) message me with their name/info and I'll try to give them a cameo!

You guys will be helping Chatan, a soothsayer, navigate the rather tumultuous goings on in the Hanwi pack.

"Don't look at me like that." You avert your eyes as the bright, amber eyes of your second-in-command bore into you.
looks less than pleased with you, her ears lying flat on her head, eyelids narrowing slightly to help achieve that signature flat look of irritation she frequently shoots your way.

"Then don't act like that." She mumbles under her breath as she barely refrains from rolling her eyes.

"Like what?" You feign ignorance, "I really do think we should postpone the Welcoming Ceremony another month or so."

"A month isn't going to change what you see." Her voice took on a sing-song quality as she sat on her haunches.Β

You know she's technically right, your gift of second sight lets you know a wolf's worth with just a glance. Their whole destiny weighed out and boiled down to a single snippet for you to see. Whether they will be of value to the pack or a burden. If they will help build the next generation or tear it asunder, you will be able to see with but a single glance. It's a lot of pressure to put upon a singe wolf but you brought this upon yourself. When building your pack you chose only be best of the best, assuming that they would go onto create the best of the best. Well, you know what they say happens when you assume.

You'll never forget the look on Nahimana's face when you told her that her firstborn couldn't grow up in the Hanwi pack. She assures you that she understands why it had to be done but you'll still catch a sorrowful look in her eyes on occasion. You put a few procedures and policies in place to help mitigate the transition when a wolf is banished from the pride (which included rebranding 'banished' as 're-homed') but it's still hard on the pack when a pup has to leave.

"Chatan!" Tokala's stern voice snaps you out of your train of thought. "It's time for Skah's Welcoming Ceremony."
-----------------------

A) Fake an illness, they can't do the ceremony when you are dying of some rare, unknown disease!

B) Put your big wolf-pants on and do the ceremony.

C) Make a break for it! You're pretty sure you can outrun Tokala...maybe.

For a moment you consider fleeing but a quick glance at Tokala squashes that idea, she looks like she is already anticipating you bolting for the hills and has positioned herself to intercept you. With a soft sigh, you resign yourself to the inevitable. You grab your ceremony cloak and toss it across your shoulders before forging ahead to the cliffside where the ceremony will take place. Tokala follows a step or two behind you silently, opting not to fill the silence with unnecessary chatter. As you cross the Hanwi scent line a chorus of trills and twitters raises the alert that you are approaching.

------

Before you can even get all four paws into the clearing by the cliffside, the boisterous voice of the guest of honor reaches your ears. The only warning before a mound of fur slams into you at full force.

"Uncle Chatan!"

"Hello Skah." The young wolf is practically vibrating with excitement as she clumsily runs laps around you. Today is the day that Skah finds out what rank she would get, you'll take a glimpse at her future and determine if she is worthy enough to stay with the Hanwi pack.

"Calm down, little one." The soft voice of her mother made the chastising sound more like praise. Chumani was one of the most beloved members of the pack, thoughtful and affectionate she was one of the first wolves you had recruited for your pack.

"Sorry mama." Skah managed to compose herself slightly, standing mostly still as you clear your throat and turn to address the rest of the pack members that were gathered around.

"Today we ask the gods to look upon Skah and find her worthy. If the gods smile upon you favorably you will take your place in the pack with your kin. If they find you lacking you are to be re-homed to a pack that better suits your destiny." With that you take a deep breath and close your eyes, calling upon the giver of your devine gift to give you insight into Skah's future. When you open your eyes the world has gone pitch black save for the pale eyes of the young wolf waiting for judgment. Soon those fade away as well leaving nothingness behind for a moment before the world is alive again. A series of scenes flash before you:

Skah foraging and mixing medicine with the old grizzly. Skah participating in a Night Howl with her mother and the other scouts. Skah cowering away from an unfamiliar wolf as they gnash their teeth and swipe at her. Skah taking a torch to the Great Sacred Tree at the edge of the Hanwi territory.

A sharp, stabbing pain pricks the base of your skull as the visions fade and the world comes back into focus. You try to school your face into a look of neutrality as you look at the young white wolf, a carbon copy of her mother, waiting eagerly to hear where her destiny places her in the pack.

"Well, Uncle Cha?"
-----------------------

A) Reveal what you saw and banish her, the bad far outweighs the good in Skah's future.

B) Lie through your teeth, no way you are going to look Skah in the eyes and tell her the horror you witnessed.

C) Stall, see if you can better decipher the visions you saw before banishing Skah.

Your eyes dart around frantically as you scramble to come up with an excuse, any excuse to avoid telling Skah what you saw. Your eyes lock with Tokala and she tilts her head slightly, sensing your hesitation. The scenes flash across your field of vision like an afterimage as you take a step away from Skah.

This doesn't make any sense, usually you have at least an inkling of how these things will go. Since you pushed back the Welcome Ceremony of pups born into the pack to after their first birth date there's time for the pup to show their personality. As far as you know Skah has shown herself to be as kind as her mother, accommodating to her fellow pupmates and respectful to her elders. She was eager to learn and diplomatic enough to be your first choice as a future pack ambassador for lesions with neighboring territories. The first half of the scenes you saw were inline with the Skah that stands before you. The Skah who you watched destroy the very foundation of the Hanwi pack is a stranger to you. There must be something wrong here. Something you are missing.

"How strange." You shake your head, "this must not be an auspicious day. I'm having trouble getting the full picture. Apologies Skah but we must try again another day."

Skah's face crumples, and her lower lip wobbles slightly. She opens her mouth, surely to ask for clarification but nothing comes out other than a small whine. Chumani rushes forward to comfort her daughter, giving her a few reassuring licks.

"Can't you just try again?" The little whine in her voice hints that she's only just barely out of puphood.

"I'm so sorry my dear, it doesn't work like that. Don't fret now, it'll be sorted out in a few days. I'm sure of it." With a quick, awkward pat on her shoulder, you hastily make your retreat, breaking through the small crowd and all but dashing back into the woodlands.

Real smooth. That wasn't suspicious at all, now what?

A) Visit Nakamo, your semi-helpful spirit guide.

B) Visit Tashunka, a fellow soothsayer.

C) Visit the Great Sacred Tree.

Mind racing, you make a beeline for the Great Sacred Tree. Hopefully being around the source of your connection to the spirits beyond will give you more clarity. The twisted cyprus tree stands silent in the middle of the murky swamp, you bound across a narrow walkway made of wayward roots from the ancient tree. As you look up and close your eyes a loud caw disrupts the eerie silence.

"You only ever visit when you have a problem that needs fixing." The annoying voice has you grinding your teeth.

"Do you mind, Nakamo?" You roll your eyes.Β

"Not at all, thank you for asking." Nakamo's voice is dripping with sarcasm as he swoops down from one of the higher branches to land a few feet in front of you.

"Only you would make jokes at a time like this." You try to keep the growl out of your voice to no avail.

"Who is joking? You have some nerve charging in here without any consideration for those who are already consulting with the spirits." Nakamo flaps his wings a bit as he reprimands you.

"I don't have time for your hurt feelings, I'm dealing with a crisis here."

"I know, why do you think I'm here." He rolls his eyes with a small sneer.

The fact that Nakamo was summoned here by the spirits themselves is alarming, the last time that happened was…never. This can't be good, a sense of dread is slowly building as you raise your eyebrows waiting for an explanation.

"You can wipe that look of expectation off your face, I have no idea why I was summoned or what I'm to assist you with. So why don't you start by telling me what's got you so worked up."

You hastily explain what you saw at the Welcoming Ceremony, having to force yourself to slow down and not stumble over your words. Once you finish Nakamo sighs heavily and shakes his head.

"That is troubling indeed. Did you recognize the other wolf that appeared in the vision? The one who was scolding Skah?" Nakamo tilts his head expectantly.

"No, I've never seen them before." You think hard about the appearance of the wolf, pitch black with dark eyes. Though you can't place the wolf you get a feeling that they aren't a stranger, or that they won't be when the events in the vision take place.Β

"Hm, this might be beyond my assistance. Maybe you should pay a visit to Tashunka, see if maybe there is something bigger at play?" Nakamo starts to take off. Either to locate Tashunka or go back to his nest, you're unsure.

---------------------
A) Go find Tashunka, maybe they will be more helpful than Nakamo.

B) Stay put and try to sort this out yourself, maybe some meditation will help?

C) Go back and confess what you really saw to the pack, maybe Skah is simply dangerous.

Not wanting to wait around and find out, and still too afraid to face the pack, you take off towards the prairie at the base of your mountain territory. By the time you cross into the Woohpe pack territory the sun has started its decent. You pick up your pace but find that it's not too long before you gain a traveling companion. The scent and gait is unfamiliar but you don't necessarily sense any outright hostility.

"Are you here as my devoted guide?" You sneer a little as you spare a glance over your shoulder, unable to spot the mystery wolf.

"Not exactly." The deep voice sends a small spark of familiarity but you can't place it. As you rack your brain trying to place the voice to a face you almost run smack into a scrawny menace.

"That's far enough you twit." The Woohpe pack leader stands before you, looking haggard as ever, teeth bared and eyes wild.

"Iya, move."

"Don't you dare order me around, last I checked it was my scent line you crossed over." Iya takes a step forward, lowering his head and baring his teeth. You stand your ground, confident that if it came to it you could beat Iya in a fight, the older wolf is years deep into a rather nasty yarrow habit and is well on his way to becoming a mere shell of his former self.

"I'm not here to cause any trouble, I just need to speak to-"

"Tashunka." Iya finished in a mocking tone.

"Look, the faster you let me through the faster I'll be out of here. This doesn't concern you."

"If it has to do with my subordinates then it does concern me." The older wolf shifts to your left and as you sidestep to the right you notice the not-quite-familiar wolf emerge from your right. A trap.

"It'll be easier for everyone if you just leave." Now in full view, the stranger's voice is firm. The wolf is massive, his eerie, pale eyes bore into you.

" Fremder is right, runt. Get. Lost."

--------------------------------

A) Forget this, you'd rather face the pack than scrap with either of these two.

B) Lunge at Fremder, he may have the size advantage but surely you're faster?

C) Lunge at Iya, the old coot needs to fight his own battles.

B - maybe taking the stronger one off guard would be better than attacking the haggard, yarrow-filled individual? going back and not giving Skah a chance doesn't seem worth it
