Introduction

Long ago, when all was right with the world, the Dawn Pack, then the Moon Pack, lived in peace and tranquility. There was always enough to eat, there were no disagreements between them and their neighbors that couldn't be solved with negotiation. There was little sickness, and when there was, it could easily be set right by the herbalists' skillful paws. They walked in harmony with their ancestors and the spirits of the earth communed with the seers openly and happily.

Then, in an instant, their good fortune came to a close. For months and months there was no rain. There was no snow. There was not even enough water in the air to create foggy or misty mornings. The ground became hard and dry, the grasses and trees, and all the plants that herbalists needed for healing began to die. Animals fled the area in search of food and water. The Moon wolves, unable to part with their homeland, stayed behind, even after other packs fled.

After the droughts came the fires... A careless human lit a fire despite the danger, and the prairie went up in flames around them. In the pack's desperate scramble to flee to safety, several wolves were lost and never found. All of the medicine that the herbalists had crafted was lost. Winter was coming, and there would be no way for them to heal the sick or injured. And oh what a winter it was...

It was bitterly cold and dry. Many wolves became sick and did not recover, many more died from hunger... When the spring and summer returned, they were stormy. In the summer it would rain for days on end, and wolves were lost to the overwhelming power of flash floods and overflowing rivers. The pack began to dwindle. The few who remained believed that soon there would be no pack at all, and that they were all living their last days... There were earthquakes, more floods, fires, and there never was enough to eat, nor enough plants remaining alive for the herbalists to help the sick and injured.

Hope was lost when the leader of the time, Thistle, drowned. With a heavy heart, his daughter, Ember, took her place as leader, working hard to keep her packmates safe and fed. She did her best in the worst of times.

By the time the disasters, known as the Great Endings, came to an end, there were only six wolves left - Ember, the leader, Yarrow, her mate and the herbalist, Dust, a seer, and three hunters - Meadow, Mumble, and Larch. They toiled and suffered and worked hard in order to bring home just the minimum they needed to scrape by...Time marched on. Slowly the wolves learned how to survive in the harsh landscape left by the fires, floods, droughts, and earthquakes. New pups were born. The earth recovered.

Believing they needed to honor their survival, and those who did not, Dust believed they needed to mark their pack with something that would remind them of what they had gone through. It was not hard to convince all of the survivors. The Moon Pack renamed themselves the Dawn Pack, and Ember was renamed Ember Dawn. Following this, it was agreed that to distinguish between the highest ranking wolves who fought and bled and suffered and died for their pack and the other wolves, they would take a second name. Yarrow became Yarrow Leaf, and Dust became Dust Whisper.

All of these wolves have long since passed, but their legacies remain in those still living. That is how the Dawn Pack came to be.

Pack Lore, History & Other Information

The Pack's Name
The name of this pack, the Dawn Pack, was thought up by the oldest members after the Great Endings. For ages dawn has been a symbol or metaphor for new beginnings, fresh starts, and hope. Those who survived the Great Endings believed that they should always remember that even after the worst disasters, there is an opportunity to start anew and begin again.

The Great Endings
The Great Endings were a series of severe natural disasters that wiped out entire packs of wolves and killed many other animals. There were several floods, fires, droughts, and earthquakes over a several year period, which made it more difficult to catch food and survive. Many did not have the strength to make it, and those who did could only do so with the help and support of other wolves around them.

Pack Timeline
The Great Endings took place 10 years ago. In the wild, wolves may live as long as 13 years, meaning there are very very few wolves in the pack still alive that are able to remember these events at all. It is more likely that most of the wolves in the pack remember the difficult times that followed. For a period of around 8 years, life was quite difficult. Food was scarce, hostilities with other packs were quite high due to a lack of resources, etc. Only recently, in the last 2 years, have things gotten easier for the Dawn Pack and all those it borders.

Where the Pack Lives
This pack lives on the prairie.

Naming & Roles
Leader Names
Like with the pack's name, the previous generation of surviving wolves thought it was necessary to remind every wolf in the pack that they have been given such a great gift - a new beginning and a chance to recover and move on. As such, the first leader to take control during the Great Endings renamed herself Ember Dawn. When she passed away, her son renamed himself Ash Dawn before taking over as leader. Every leader since them has taken on "Dawn" as the second part of their name.

Beta Names
A beta is the second highest ranking wolf in the pack, and they are always one of the Leader's children. They also have a two-part name ending in Dusk. So if an heir is named Amber before being made the Beta, their name will become Amber Dusk.

Herbalist Names
Herbalists also have two-word names, but they have a little more variation in what their suffix might be. There are usually 2-3 depending on the size of the pack. Their names may end in: Flower, Petal, Leaf, Thorn, or Stem. They receive the second part of their name after they complete their training.

Seer Names
Seers are the spiritual leads of the pack, and there are always 3 of them - a male wolf, a female wolf, and a nonbinary wolf. Each of them have a different purpose. The male wolf communes with the spirits of the earth and animals, the female wolf interoperates prophecies and signs from their ancestors, and the nonbinary wolf speaks with the spirits of the elements and wolves that are not their ancestors. They receive the second part of their name after they complete their training, and their names may end in Moon, Star, Sight, or Whisper.

Hunter, Heir, Scout, & Warrior Names
Hunters, heirs (the children of the leader) scouts, and warriors, which make up a majority of the pack have simple one-word names that are derived from nature. These names may describe their appearance, personality, or accomplishments of their parents. So for example, a red-based wolf might be named Cedar, or a blue-eyed wolf might be named Sky. But a wolf with spots might have the name Patch, Dapple, Speckle, etc. The only time a hunter, scout, or warrior will have a two-word name is if they have accomplished something great and impressive. A two-word name denotes status and power within a pack. Note: Dawn is not a name that is off limits to regularly-ranked pack members. They may be named this, but their name will, obviously, be changed to something that sounds less silly if they happen to become leader.

Question: Can my wolf have a name that doesn't follow this rule?
Answer: Only if they have a background from outside the pack, otherwise they must be named this way. On top of that, there will be a cap of 5 wolves allowed to come from outside the pack at the beginning of RP. It is not very common for wolves to leave their packs to join a different one.

Appearances

When creating your character, for the appearance section, please use the Wolvden wardrobe to create them and then place the image in the bio. This makes everything simpler for everyone. Unnatural colors ARE allowed, but try not to go too overboard with them, and same goes for the eyes, skin, nose, and claws.
