Toklat Valley Pack Lore Summary

Reigned February 4, 2024 (Middle of Spring, Year 1) - present

The Toklat Valley Pack began with two young wolves, and though the rangers familiar with the area named the pair Denali and Sihásapa, researchers at the nearby facility simply refered to them as TAM1001 and TAF1002. The goal of this project was both to diversify the gene pool of the existing wolf population as well as establish a detailed account of the pack's survival.

Even in the rehabilitation center, the wolves were left largely untouched by the team, and lived for a short time in the sanctuary before being moved to their new territory. TAF1002 was equipped with a radio tag and released alongside TAM1001 in the Toklat Mountains, and researchers were delighted when the pair stayed close to the drop-off site. Not only that, but it was soon discovered that A02 was pregnant with her first litter. The pack was watched closely until the birth, and observed TAF1002 hunting up to the day before the pups arrived. The three pups were numbered TM2003, TM2004, and TF2005 by researchers, and given the names Hy'Shqa, Tahoma, and Mahikan by the rangers.

Wolf ID Numbers

ID number system was adapted from #86206 's system.

T = This wolf is part of Toklat Valleypack
R = A wolf not identified as a member of the Toklat pack
A = This wolf is a leading alpha of Toklat pack
1, 2, 3+ = Number of generation
000 = Order of appearance within pack territory
M = Male
F = Female

As an example, alpha Denali's ID number is TA1001M. The T and A denote that he is a member of the Toklat Valley pack, and leads as one of the alphas. The first number 1 shows he is of the first generation, and the 001 numbers him as the first wolf cataloged. He is male, so his ID number ends in the M identifier.

Outside wolves prior to joining the Toklat Valley pack will begin with the letter R, and will only change to T once accepted into the pack. The number usually associated with bloodline will be 0, showing they're unaffiliated with the pack's bloodlines. The rest follows the same system as Toklat wolves.

Spring, Year 1

Ranger's Notes; Mid Spring

This morning, we finally received a signal from Sihásapa's collar! She and Denali stayed surprisingly close to the rehabilitation center, and seem to have settled into the foothills of the Toklat Mountains. It seems fitting that the first two wolves of this research project would stay close to their namesake. It's just further proof that the earth speaks to all its creatures, and its creatures speak back. I have high hopes for these two, and the good they will do in shaping this land.

As the other rangers and I observe the pair, we are more and more certain Sihásapa is pregnant. Though the researchers need more time to know for certain, I am sure she carries the next generation with her already. The two are healthy, and show signs of eating small prey. A burst of quail feathers were left behind in their wake just yesterday -- a sign of a successful hunt. I hope this goodfortune continues for our pair.

Noteable Events;

Mid Spring
- Wolves TA1001M and TA1002F settle in the foothills of the Toklat Mountains
- TA1002F is witnessed hunting for the first time, successfully taking down a few quail

Late Spring
- TA1002F has chosen a den to birth her pups – nestled at the foothills of the Toklat Mountains, she is both close to the river and the plentiful hunting grounds of the grasslands
- TA1001M chases a lynx out of pack territory and suffers a few superficial wounds

End of Spring
- Pups T2003M, T2004M, and T2005F were born on the last day of spring
- As TA1002F nurses her newborn pups, TA1001M takes on the task of hunting and brings a grouse back to the den

Summer, Year 1

Ranger's Notes; Beginning of Summer

Sihásapa's had her pups! Three tiny little creatures, their eyes still squeezed tight against the world. It's a blessing for both the parents and the Toklat people. They've each been named by a ranger on the team. Mahikan's namesake is a bit on the nose, as it's cree for "wolf," but by brother wants to keep his culture alive in any way he can. Tahoma, which means "snow-covered mountain" is fitting because he was born the last day of snow atop the nearby mountain peaks. And Hy'Shqa, the only female of the litter was named for the Samish word "blessing" or "thank you."

This summer has been mild, and the hunts we've seen have been plentiful. Only time will tell how Sihásapa will provide for herself and Denali. As the most skilled hunter of the two, she has been seen bringing in the most prey for the pair, and nursing pups will have her occupied. For the next few weeks, we'll be working around the clock in order to get a glimpse of the young pups.

Noteable Events;

Beginning of Summer
- TA1002F continues to hunt her preferred prey: quail and grouse
- TA1001M had a confrontation with a bull, sustaining minor injuries while chasing it from the territory

Early Summer
- TA1002F was seen hunting grouse close to the birthing den
- TA1001M gets into a confrontation with a bobcat that strayed too close to the den, sustaining injuries that resulted in a slight limp
- TA1001M has become more defensive of the territory near the birthing den since the arrival of the three pups

Mid Summer
- After a few days' rest, TA1001M seems to have healed from his injuries
- Both TA1001M and TA1002F are sighted for the first time in nearly a week, and TA1002F shows signs of nursing pups

Late Summer
- Late in the night, a pack of coyotes were seen near Toklat Valley pack territory; in the morning, the body of T2004M was found, killed
- With only TA1001M and TA1002F feeding and watching over the pack, efforts to release R006F by the end of summer seems more urgent than ever

End of Summer
- T2003M and T2005F have been weaned, though they remain within a half mile of the den at all times
- TA1002F was seen hunting woodpeckers, the meals meager compared to the pack's appetite
- Wolf R006F has been released just outside of Toklat Valley pack territory, in the hopes they will take in a new member

Ranger's Notes; Late Summer

We heard the cries of the coyote pack,  but didn't think anything of it at first. Then, morning came and I got a report from one of my rangers.

Tahoma's body was barely recognizable after the coyotes got to him, but we were able to confirm the pup's identity after seeing the rest of Toklat Pack by the den. Tonight, my team will sing for her spirt, so she will be guided even in death. This recent event has quickened the release schedule of Nakota, the wolf that was taken in shortly after the release of the Toklat Valley alphas. Hopefully, Nakota will be accepted by the pair and be able to contribute to the survival of the family that's left.
