The Pack

Hazel

Crag

The Lycanthropes:

Hazel:
Leader of the pack, first to be infected.

The pack matriarch and level head of the entire burrow, she designates where the pack hunts, who eats, and who breeds. She is a stern but fair leader, even after contracting the strange disease from the lone wolf.

She thinks back to that often, with an understanding now that she did not have before, as if some veil has been slightly lifted from her eyes. Hazel knows she can never go back, she doesn’t want to. The stranger had brought a gift, a gift that was slowly weaving into the very foundation of her pack.

Crag:
Second in command

Crag is Hazel's mate and father to many of the den's pups. He has an aptitude towards herbal remedies and was placed in the position of healer before most of the pack can even remember. He's even tempered and patient but harsh on the younger pups. Him and Vandal tend to but heads more often than not.

He is indifferent to the affliction, though the infection nearly killed him. Crag had one of the worst reactions to the virus, but he managed to pull through, and finds annoyance with Vandal's sheer delight at the new situation. He is actively seeking a cure, but more so for the wolves who didn't want this and want to go back to the way things were.

Vandal:
Future Pack Matriarch

Hot blooded and bull headed, Vandal is the next in line to lead the pack. She revels in the hunt, completely falling into what she calls "the descent of the red mist." There is absolutely no question that she can protect the pack, and now there is no question in that she will take over when Hazel falls. Either by nature or by force, Vandal WILL take the pack some day.

She was already a fire cracker before being changed, but a fight with Hazel over a petty food dispute has made her even more of a force to be reckoned with. Even though she plans to take the pack some day, Vandal is tolerated because she respects Hazel and violently defending the pack against any threat without hesitation, regardless of her constant prodding.

Naza:
Pack Elder

Naza is appointed protector of the cubs and young bloods. Naturally a large wolf. the infection has doubled her in size, making her quite the intimidating force to any and all near her. Pack or no, she will let no hard come to the pups.

She views her affliction as a gift, having urged Hazel to bite her in order to infect her as well. Naza took to it well, only taking a few days to recover before she immediately returned to her duty. Vandal is the biggest thorn in her side, earning more than one or two snaps of those massive jaws.

Blood Sun:
Hunter

Blood Sun is one of the most aggressive wolves in the pack, willing to tear apart anything that moves after becoming infected. She has been trying with Crag to mitigate her rage and the "red mist" as Vandal has come to call it. She respects Vandal more than Hazel and eagerly awaits the young blood to take Hazel's place.

The infection is both a boon and a curse to Blood Sun. She was one of the best hunters even before her transformation, but now finds little comfort in control. She is constantly hungry, constantly on edge, and because of this she can't be near any of the pups. Her own pup has been taken by Naza to be raised in a safer space. Unfortunately it seems that Blood Moon will grow up to be just as malicious as her mother.

Blood Moon:
Whelp

Blood Sun's pup, and just as aggressive as her mother, yet control seems to come a bit easier to her. Being born with the infection has made her numb to it- having known nothing else.

Broken Claw:
Whelp

A spunky young blood who's still trying to make her impression in the pack.

Midnight:
Whelp

A quite thing. Hazel has taken a special liking to her, seeing as how she appears to be the polar opposite of Vandal. Perhaps the matriarch sees some protentional in this one, should Vandal's flame get snuffed out early..

Birchface:
New Comer

A new face to the pack, she has more than proved herself by taking the extra pups under her paw. She's a beautiful wolf that Crag took to right away and has taken well to the infection. Hazel has accepted her into the inner ranks, finding value in her skills.

The Wolves:

Kitsune:  Uninfected pupsitter, watches the untainted litters
Lavander: Whelp
Whisper: Whelp
Rinku: Whelp
Rain: Whelp
Banks: Uninfected hunter.
Willow: Uninfected hunter

Infection and the Dead Living in the bog lands has never been easy, but when an aggressive outsider comes sniffing around, they must be dealt with swiftly.

Only that outsider brought with them an infection from the human villages.

In the fight, the pack leader received a heavy injury, temporarily crippling her. Crag was bitten deeply as well, but the intruder was taken down and left to rot in the swamp while the pack went to the burrows to lick their wounds.

Hazel’s recovery was surprisingly fast given the severity of the injury, with the leader growing stronger and stronger as the nights progressed. She began to change, along with Crag, little things here and there, growing bigger, her paws shifting.. it wasn’t until the next full moon that things came to a head, with Hazel becoming something not quite a wolf, not at all human. She was bigger, stronger, and hungrier.

Crag suffered from the same effects, the two wolves now not quite something of the pack, but still.. family.

With their newfound strength and mutations, hunting became much easier, and the size of the prey they could bring down became even greater. They no longer feared any other predator, not even the humans with their strange weapons. Anything that entered their bog was fair game.

This affliction didn’t pass to all, the more submissive wolves not stirring up a fight, but the more un accepting wolves and challengers were quickly put in their place about who was still leader, leading to a few more blooming infections.
Now the pack is a healthy mix of monster and wolf.. sometimes in the fog of the morning, the humans can swear they see a wolf that’s not quite right out there. But no one dares enter the bog.

Now that leads to an important question, what happens to those who die in the bog? How has there been no remains to find? The simple answer is, they eat their dead.

And the more complicated answer is, nothing in the bog is wasted, if a pack member dies it is eaten out of respect as much as for survival. This includes still born puppies and the sick.

By eating sick wolves, they build an immunity wo whatever killed their comrade in their eyes, and eating and pups who pass is seen as taking them back into the blood to give them another shot at life, only at a later date. In doing this, they eat everything down to the bones, leaving nothing behind to be defiled or stolen by outsiders or other predators.

The pack also believes by eating their own, they take in the spirit of their members, keeping them within the bog and keeping the bog protected both spiritually and physically. To be cast out from the pack is the most damning process, being thrown out of not only their home, but the circle of the pack as well. Any exiled wolf or lycanthrope will be chased from the bog and no longer be considered part of the cycle within it's ecosystem. Any foolish enough to return is attacked as if they were an intruder, and and if the attack results in the outsiders death, they are fed to the creatures of the bog, still barred from rejoining the spiritual circle of the Broken Branch Pack.

Lycanthropy Research Infection is passed via bites or scratches or through breeding, but some wolves have shown a resistance to the virus, while their puppies do not tend to enjoy the same immunity.

Symptoms include but are not limited to:

- Lethargy
- Increases aggression
- Excess bleeding
- Increased growth
- Fur Loss
- Splitting of the paws

These symptoms will continue until the first full moon since infection, some having rapid symptoms or some having extremely slow symptoms.

To be noted: This infection is permanent, and no cure has been found as of yet by the herbalist. Wolves who see the infection to completion remain changed regardless of the lunar phases, though the symptoms of bleeding and lethargy to tend to disappeared as the infection completes its cycle.

Territory and Hunting Grounds Territory Overview:

The Broken Branch pack lives within the safety of a dense bog, making it less than idea for any human interference. Hazel makes the most of the space the pack has claimed, separating the sleeping dens to avoid any unneeded fights after the first spat she had with Vandal.

The biggest den goes to the lycanthropes, affording more space for sleep as well as any needed sparring to ease the tension of the Red Mist. The opening is surrounded by large rocks that the strongest of the lycans have gathered and placed on the sides to afford more privacy. The back is an open air cave  flanked by thick bog trees, affording both camouflage  better vision of any intruders coming through the bog.

The second den, and the smaller of the two is similar in build to the first, but not quite as big. Stones do not flank this den, but heavy brush does.  Located behind this den is more murky water that is used to teach the whelps how to swim, affording the pack even more hunting opportunities.

The Third and final den is the smallest of the lost, creating specifically for whelp rearing. It gives the adults a chance for peace, and it only big enough for the pups to sleep after swimming and hunting lessons once they become old enough to do so. It is flanked on all sides by stones gathered by Vandal and Crag, affording complete protection from any would be predators, with only one opening on the dryer part of the land.

Hunting is an exercise of adaptation. With the bog being mostly water, the pack has taken to learning to swim swiftly and silently, actually using themselves as bait for the bigger aquatic inhabitants. Alligators are their prime food, and one will feed the pack for a good few days. Nothing is wasted, as they will not hesitate to scavenge to make sure they never run out of food. Humans are not typically on their radar, but should any be foolish enough to enter their territory, the pack will not pass up the opportunity for fresh meat.
