Cynefir
(n) a place that feels like home

You glanced at the cave entrance. This must be it, you can feel it in your soul. You had felt …something, the feeling is hard to explain. It was an urge to go into a specific direction. At first you tried to ignore it, but it was just to big to not to, so you gave in. The feeling led you to this cave. You thought it would disappear once you reached the destination it lead you to, but it was still there, nagging you to go into the cave. You hesitated to do this. You didn't know what expects you in the cave. For all you knew it could be dangerous. The cave didn't smell like an other predator though and your curiosity won eventually. You stepped cautiously into the cave that turned out to be a long tunnel. You followed the tunnel until you could see light at the and. After a time that felt like an eternity you stepped out into a forest, similar to the one at the entrance. Something felt off though. You couldn't really explain what, but it felt different than your home, yet it felt like you belong here.

Ùlfar are a species similar to wolves. They look alike, the only difference is that ùlfar have a different frequency and they have power called Lifa. Lifa makes it possible for a ùlfar to use magical abilities. They had to be once in their own dimension however, to have access to their Lifa. Using their abilities draws on an ùlfurs Lifa and is exhausting. They can die if they use up too much Lifa. It can be replenished by food and rest. What ability an ùlfur posses is determined by their eye color. The powers have a name of their own.

  • Rauður: Ùlfar, who have the eye color red, have power over fire. They can summon and control fire with their willpower. Once this ability is activated, fire cannot harm them anymore.
  • Blár: Ùlfar with the eye color blue can control water. They can also feel if water is near and breath under water. Some might even gain power over ice. This is extremely rare however.
  • Grænn: Ùlfar with the eye color green can grow plants. They know instinctively, which plants are poisonous, which plants are edible and which can heal one.
  • Gràtt: Ùlfar with the eye color grey have power over air. They can lift things up or push them out of the way. They can only do this with things they would be able to carry.
  • Svartur: Ùlfar with the eye color black can become invisible and have heightened senses. They can see extremely well in the dark. They only need a small light source. They are more sensitive to spirits due to their heightened senses. How sensitive they are differs from ùlfur to ùlfur, but all ùlfar with this eye color can at least sense spirits.
  • Hvítur: Ùlfar with the eye white color can make parts of their body glow. They can make this light so bright that it can blind another temporarily or even permanently. Their eyes however are immune to this.

Ùlfar came originally from another dimension called Heima, though this name is long forgotten. Heima is similar to earth. The flora is almost the same. The fauna however is different. There seem to be no predators, only prey and most of these prey animals seem to be bioluminescent. The ùlfar left Heima countless generations ago. The reason for this is unknown. They mixed with the wolves and the knowledge has been lost over the course of generations. Heima has a magic of its own and called to the ûlfar to come home. Six of them have found Heima, one of each eye color. What they aren't aware of yet is the danger that lurks in the dark. Will they be able to overcome this danger? Can they uncover the secrets of the past and learn to control their powers?

The Danger

The danger is creatures called shadows. Shadows are bigger and stronger than the average ùlfar and resemble canines or felines. They have a shadowy form and glowing red eyes. They come only out at night and their major weakness is light. They are extremely aggressive and attack almost immediately at sight.

the History of Heima

It was the harshest winter in years and prey was scarce than the shadows appeared. The four largest packs just restored peace after a war. It was neither the first nor the worst war, but there were losses nonetheless and peace was still fragile. No one knew where the shadows came from nor what to do about them at first. Though it was clear they were a big threat. The loners joined the packs and the smaller packs merged with the larger packs. After some time they found out that the shadows weakness is light or at least they are repulsed by it. The packs ordered that every ùlfar must stay in camp at night and rauður and hvítur were used as guards. Now the shadows weren't as big of a problem as before. The bigger problem was the absence of prey. At this time not many prey animals were bioluminescent and the once that weren't were often killed by shadows. That made prey even scarcer than it already was and the packs began to fight each other over food. At this time spirits sent many svartur the message that were was a way to lands without the shadows and with prey. As the word spread, the ùlfar were at first hesitant. Leaving their home was a big decision, but they starved and after a long debate the ùlfar decided they had to leave. Not everyone came along, but it was the majority of ùlfar. They were lead to a portal to earth, where they encountered a similar species called wolves. They discovered earth was similar to Heima, though there were a few differences. The biggest difference was that earth lacked the magic of Heima and ùlfar born there couldn't access their powers. Without other predators than the shadows around, prey could repopulate on Heime and bioluminescence pushed through. This and other important events were recorded as paintings in caves.

The roleplay starts with the six ùlfar meeting each other at the tunnel exit. Despite entering the tunnel at different locations they exit it at the same location.
