Hallow yelps in pain as teeth sink into the back of its neck and claws score along its flank. That really wasn't one of the brightest ideas it'd ever had, it thinks ruefully. It lets itself go limp and rolls onto its back, trying to dislodge reddish brown but it can't get free. Ink dark blood splatters across the ground, staining what little shrubbery still survives.

A firm voice rings out through the air, and the other wolf finally gets off of Hallow. Gray—Julia—introduces herself and reddish brown—Insight. Julia asks for a name. It will not speak, so it tilts its head and stares, offering her a helpless look.

Roc is wheeling high above the clouds, higher than anyone else in her pack as ever been and reveling in it. Here, she can feel the sun on her skin and a playful breeze ruffling her fur. Here, she can pretend that the past few weeks haven't happened, if only for a little while. She mustn't forger her duty, though. A howl splits the air, the notes lilting and oddly eerie. Ah, it must be Hallow then, the one she was sent to find. With a sigh filled with longing, Roc dives back down to rejoin her rain-soaked brethren.

She lands gracefully atop a tree, its slight branches barely bending under her weight. Roc scans the fog with sharp eyes (useful to a predator wheeling high above the earth) to see the fighting shapes of another wolf and what is unmistakably Hallow. Immediately, she launches into flight, the weight of the rain on her feathers dragging her down until her wings catch the wind just right and she soars, ready to leap to Hallow's defense with bared teeth and swiping claws if necessity demands.

It turns out that upon further observation, none of that will be needed. A gray wolf intervenes and breaks the two up, looking to Hallow to ask a question it can't answer. Roc catches their names as she lights down several paces away, always far enough to take flight from any danger. Her ragged black wings fold and though they are still magnificent, any onlooker could tell that they've seen better days.

"It's name is Hallow," she says in lieu of a greeting. "I am Roc." And then, minding her manners, "It's nice to meet you."

Roc surveys Insight and Julia with open curiosity as Hallow retreats to lick his wounds.

"We haven't met anyone else still living," she ventures. It isn't quite obvious if you're not looking, but she's positioned slightly in front of Hallow, between it and Insight and Julia.

Insight nodded, though niggling familiarity flooded through her mind. Where have I seen this wolf before?

Julia smiled. "It's nice to meet you as well, Roc. I'm sorry for Insight's behavior; normally, she's nicer." She ducked her head to whisper, "Come on, Insight. You need to apologize to them."

"That's where I've seen you before!" Insight recalled suddenly. "I've seen you in a dream!"

Roc blinks in surprise, idly rearranging her paws neatly under her. It's a nervous habit but one more on the discreet side. It only looks like she's shifting to stand more comfortably. Hallow hauls itself to its feet, stepping gingerly forward to stand beside her. Blood rolls down the side of its neck and steadily drip drip drips to the ground, joining the rain in its mournful tempo. It tilts its head at Insight, trying to prompt her to go on.

"A dream, you say?" Roc murmurs softly, more to herself than anyone else. "So your pack has gifts as well?"

"Gifts?" Insight tilted her head, thinking. "I've never heard of those before. Are they like what you and this wolf have? Oh, and speaking of, I'm sorry." She dipped her head respectfully towards the other wolf. "I thought you were something else that would hurt us…"

"What she means is that we encountered a monster. The rest of our hunting party vanished with it, including Insight's brother," Julia interjected. "Still, Insight, that doesn't mean you should've attacked Hallow."

Roc nods and shakes herself both in attempt to seem more casual and to rid herself of some of the water clinging to her pelt. The latter decidedly does not work.

"Yes, exactly that. They're things that set us apart from normal wolves or let us do strange things."

As she talks, Hallow creeps forward and gently bumps his nose to Insight's in apology. Now that it's thinking about it, seeing a stranger with possibly hostile intentions hurtling after your packmate could be scary. It pulls away and with a gentle tug, it's standing with Roc again, who stumbles a bit and blinks several times as if to reorient herself. She nips at its shoulder in reprimand, then gives a gentle lick to its injury.

"Be mindful of using your gift around others" she chastises with no real heat behind the words.

She turns her attention back to Julia and addresses her directly.

"I understand. Our pack is incredibly precious to us too, and I don't know how I'd react either if any of them were to get hurt. That being said, is there anything we can do?"

Julia shook her head. "Just knowing that other wolves are still alive is enough. Since the creature's scent disappeared with it and our hunting party, it's impossible to track. But I know that we can't give up; Sundown, Feather, and Seed can and will survive, and we and our pack will find them."

Insight took a moment to register this new information about gifts. "Hm, I see. I guess my dreams are a gift then!" She nodded at Hallow. Apology accepted.

"We should be heading back soon," Julia realized. They had been standing outside for a long time now, and all four of them were decidedly drenched. "Would you like our pack to know of your existence, to reassure them that we're not the only ones surviving? You can tell yours about us, if you'd like."

Roc dips her head in acquiescence and spreads her wings, shaking them slightly in a vain attempt to dispel the uncomfortable feeling of wet feathers before taking to the skies. Hallow moves to follow her then pauses, casting one last glance back towards the pair. The world almost seems to flicker and it is gone before they can blink.

The rain comes down heavy and hard at the mouth of the cave high up on the mountain that Tolle Fuga is occupying. Timber lays curled around Lorikeet and Woodpecker, the pups huddled up against each other to try to preserve body heat. Lorikeet lifts her head from where it's buried under the mass of his fur.

"They're going to come back safe, you know."

The old wolf smiles gently down at her.

"Mm. I can't say I'm not worried, but I'm certain that they will."

Morrow pads towards the three, movements steady but stiff. She carefully settles down next to Timber, sandwiching the pups between them. She yawns, then gives an affectionate lick to his greying muzzle, draping her tail gently over his to cradle Woodpecker.

"You have a lot of faith in them, love. You've made such a good leader over the years, and you've raised the little ones right."

Her voice is filled with fondness. The rest of the pack surrounds them, and their warm presences make the oppressive darkness of the days seem just a lighter.

"I feel strange," Insight confessed, after the other two wolves had left. The rain was still pounding down upon their fur, but neither felt it. "My heart is so light, even though my friends are missing. They could even be dead right now! But even with that being the case, I'm glad to know that other packs are still around."

Julia nodded in agreement. "After we get back, we should…" Insight tuned out the older wolf's tangent, as the two traced their steps. Her mind wandered, her eyes fluttered…

She blinked. Where am I? A strangely colored wolf had barged into camp, not looking threatened at all.

"Answer us! Who are you, and what business do you have with us?" The Alpha, for once, had taken the stage and began questioning the multicolored wolf. But in a flash, all of the hostility was gone, and everyone had gone back to their usual duties. Gradient, his fur bristled and his teeth bared, was now speaking easily and kindly to the young stranger. "Kindred, why did you leave camp? You know you have to keep Marella's pups out of trouble!"

"Truly? I'm sorry, it slipped my mind," the wolf apologized, his insincere smile going unrecognized by the senior wolf.

Insight gasped. Who is he? A gifted wolf? Did he actually…

"Insight? INSIGHT!" Julia's impatient voice, tinged with a hint of worry, snapped Insight out of her daydreaming— no, it was a vision. It could be happening right now, but…

"Yeah?" Insight asked, trying to buy them time.

"You were kind of dazed. Was it a vision, like you said you had of Roc?" Julia seemed more nervous than anything, most likely due to being the only normal wolf of the conversation earlier and the only one who didn't have firsthand experience with a gift of any sort. "Was it a bad vision?"

Before Insight could respond, a few wolves came through the rustling bushes. Upon spotting a familiar yellow-white pelt with white eyes, Insight smiled. "Reflection! Sis!"

The two embraced. "Where's Sundown and the others? Got lost chasing the prey?"

"No." The relieved atmosphere disappeared, replaced by one of tense anxiety. Julia ducked her head. "They disappeared when we were chasing after a scent. We suspect that some creature has captured or killed them."

"Oh…" The wordless silence stretched until they had all reached the camp. Gradient rushed down, checking them over for injuries. He seemed almost frantic with his panicked questions; and no wonder, Insight thought, for he had lost his sister and the rest of his hunting party just a week or so ago.

Julia's sudden growling startled Insight, until she saw who the other wolf was growling at. The outsider wolf—Kindred, Insight reminded herself, for it would be strange of her to not remember the name of a packmate—was, again, unfazed. "Who are you?" she muttered.

Before Kindred could pull his little party trick again, Insight cuffed Julia over the head. "You don't remember Kindred?" she questioned. Before Julia could make another remark, Insight leaned down and hissed at her, "Play along. Mind control." To her packmates, she claimed, "Julia hit her head when we were chasing the scent; I stayed behind to help her. So she might not remember some things."

"Is this true, Julia?" Gradient asked, and even though her hearing wasn't exceptional, Insight could feel the senior wolf's heartbeat spike through the roof, beating faster than a hare's heart as it ran from the pack's fastest chasers.

"Ugh… my head is pounding…" Julia responded reluctantly, though her lackluster performance seemed to convince Gradient, overprotective father wolf that he was.

"Go see Soprano. I'm sure she has something for headaches." Gradient then turned to Insight. "You should take a rest. It's been a long day for both of you."

Insight nodded, retreating to the large den that hunters and scouts slept in. On the way, she passed by Kindred, who gave her an understanding, pitying nod. At least he doesn't suspect me of anything, Insight thought with relief as she curled up in a corner and closed her eyes.

Alita stared after Julia, from her ledge in the camp. Strange, she wondered. Julia has never been hostile without reason. Why would she be so towards Kindred, who we adopted as a pup?

Caladrius sits at the mouth of the cave, scanning the fog for any approaching wolf. Occasionally, he stands and paces to the other side and back then takes his post again. He shoots a sidelong glance at his friend Yatagarasu, Tolle Fuga's other scout. Scouts are all but useless in this weather, but Timber's put their sharp eyes and keen ears to use in looking out for returning or leaving pack members.

"Was it just me or did you hear that too?"

The two are quite for a moment, ears pricked and alert to listen for the slightest sound over the rain. There it was again, the almost inaudible flap of wings much larger to be those of a bird. A moment later, Roc lands in front of the pair, regal as ever, and offers them a slight grin. Hallow appears a few paces away, shaking itself. The rain is sliding off his fur again, like water from a duck's feathers. It blinks at them once, then bounds delightedly forward and drops to a quick play bow as a hello.

The four share a few quick words (not exactly on Hallow's part) and Hallow and Roc leave to talk to Timber. Halfway there, Hallow is ambushed by his hunting party and promptly buried under a pile of wagging tails and happy greetings. Roc watches them with a fond huff before turning to Timber.

"My lord, Hallow and I met another pack while we were out. They reside higher up on the other side of the mountain. What would you have me do?"

Timber hauls himself slowly to his paws, shifting into a sitting position.

"They don't seem like a threat from your lack of urgency, so you can take whatever measure you deem best." He offers her a warm smile. "You are going to be the next leader, after all. It will be good practice."

After a quick checkup with Soprano, Julia walked back outside with a simple Healing Salve that the Herbalist had told to spread over her "head wound" so that it didn't throb as much. Julia contemplated telling her about the mind control that the other wolf had used on the pack, but decided against it. She wouldn't believe me if I did say it; none of the Pack even knows that wolves can have powers. Before she could make it back to the den, she was ambushed by Alita.

"Don't try to lie to me. Why were you so aggressive towards Kindred?" It took a moment for Julia to realize that it was the name of the stranger wolf. "I've never seen you so much as snap to anyone in the pack. I don't think you've even growled at trespassing wolves. Why was your anger directed at him?"

"I told you," Julia replied, her tone even and steady. "I mistook him for an outsider. My head hurt and I couldn't recognize some of you. Kindred just took the worst of it because I couldn't relate him to anyone in the pack, so he felt entirely foreign to me."

Julia backed off and fled to the den, flopping down onto the cold hard floor. They reinforced the dens with stone, but it's a lot less comfortable to sleep without a nest.

She could barely go to sleep in the night, wracked with paranoid thoughts of waking up in the stars with Kindred standing over her dead body.

Alita's eyes narrowed. Julia was nothing but a kind senior to everyone she knew. Could she be plotting to murder us all? she thought, before immediately shaking her head and laughing. "There's no way. That's what a child would say."

"Miss Alita?" Kindred, the little darling, appeared, his posture appearing self-conscious. "What were you saying earlier?"

"Ah, my son's son." Though of course he wasn't theirs by birth, but Alita didn't put any stock in simple blood ties anyways. "I had a little daydream that Julia was plotting to kill everyone. But of course she wouldn't! She's probably never even snapped at a butterfly."

"Ah, I see." Kindred's grin was always so wide and enthusiastic. "Maybe the pups wouldn't have wanted to hear that. Well, I'll be going!"

"Take care of little Aqua and Ruby!" Alita called, not noticing the now sinister smile that Kindred sported on his face.
