Deaf Wolves Should Have Any Role

Deaf Wolves Should Have Any Role
Posted 2022-10-21 06:51:14 (edited)
I was pretty excited about the new deaf wolves, since im hoh (deaf), when I saw the news post. When I went to see what roles they can have, I saw they could only be scouts or herbalists. They can't be hunters, pup sitters, or even lead which kinda broke my heart as my current lead is canonically deaf and it feels like there's a somewhat big limit to what these wolves can do just because they're deaf, making it seem like deaf wolves can't learn to do things that hearing wolves can. So, I wanna suggest that we can make deaf wolves take on any role. Yes, there will be some sort of "consequences" based on what role a deaf wolf takes. Here's some examples I have (feel free to add on to this!):

Deaf Hunter (Stalker):
— While the deaf wolf is stalking, they may not realize how loud they are and prey might slip away

Deaf Hunter (Chaser):
— Deaf wolf may have heightened sense of smell and easily follow prey trails, thus not losing scent trails as easily as hearing wolves (When there's an absence of one of the 5 senses, in this case, hearing, the other 4 senses are sort of boosted)
— Deaf wolf may not hear other prey rush towards them and this may result in them getting startled and lose focus for a while or may result in a small injury or big injury (-2, -4 or even -6 HP)

Deaf Hunter (Finisher):
— Deaf wolf will be able to finish the job or may accidentally let the prey go just like any other wolf

Deaf Pup sitter:
— They will be more alert than hearing wolves since they're deaf and won't be able to hear pups wander away, but pups can still slip away and get injured
— Protection cap of 70-75%

Deaf Mentors:
— Deaf mentors will be able to teach just like any other mentor
— Pups may learn how to use their other senses, besides hearing, and may have a small stat boost(+1 or +2) since the deaf mentor will teach them how

Deaf Lead Wolves:
— Will have to have been a hunter or scout at some point? (You guys can agree or disagree with this!)
— Will do anything a hearing leader can do
— When exploring, they may suffer small injuries just like hearing lead wolves can
— During battles with groups of enemies, they may not hear an enemy sneaking up behind them. So, deaf leads in a group battle may result in a 5-10% battle losses. A battle with 1 opponent will be the same as any battle a hearing wolf would have.

I understand there will be lots of in-depth coding to be done for deaf leads to acknowledge their deafness during explore encounters and more. This has been brought to my attention earlier by someone. The coding may take month or even years, but that's fine with me since I'm a very patient person! I'd just like to see deaf wolves be able to do what any other wolf could do in this game.

This is how i feel about what deaf wolves should be able to do. Just like in real life, deaf people can do anything hearing people can do except hear! I feel like deaf wolves should be able to be somewhat the same; being able to do anything hearing wolves can do. Just because the wolves are deaf, doesn't mean they can't take on somewhat challenging roles like hunters, pup sitters, etc.. — Feel free to add suggestions to this or give your opinion about whether or not it's a good idea.

I have similar feelings about blind wolves, especially since they can't have any role. They should be able to though (maybe except scouts and leads).

Anyway, support!

I think they should be able to do more at least, so I support ^^

Completely agree! Just because they are deaf or blind should not stop them from having a role. I feel like it's a tiny bit insensitive.

Absolutely agree! I am taking ASL classes (as a hearing person) so while I have no opinion over Deaf/deaf/hoh issues, I want to say -Sköll- brings up a good point. It feels pretty insensitive for blind or deaf wolves to not have roles they can opt into if the user wants. My father is hoh, so it made me pretty sad to see that wolves couldn't have the same roles as the rest of their packmates.

my mother is HoH and i have a lot of d/Deaf family, and i support this because of many reasons already said by people on this thread. i think there are definitely more things that could be added for them to do

I don't remember if this was part of the news topic but I think that deaf wolves should also be allowed scouting and herbalist roles. Pupsitting maybe not so much because pups can take advantage of the deafness (evil little weevles my pups be) But I agree with your mentoring and hunting + Scouting possibilities. Herbs do not attack and can easily be found by scent so there would be no harm in letting them herbalise for the pack. I haven't read all the explore encounters but I think it would be amazing to let them be leads too. Blind wolves could easily be herbies too, although scouts and leads I'm not so sure.. Hunters would be tricky too. Mentoring might be a plausible option, although, once again, probably not pupsitting (unless their pupsitting boost is lower than 60%..? Would not be ideal, but perhapse doable.......? I really don't know how this game works still ) Once again, I don't remember the news post so if these wolves are already allowed to be herbies and hunters and the like please ignore me I do not remember. If I ever have a deaf pup I'll make him an herbie (luck willing) My dad is hard of hearing from his time in service and I think it would be nice.....[for an herbie role]

Similarly as I said here about blind wolves, I really like that there are first mutations that impair wolves gameplay-wise but lets them live for the whole lifespan. The system of disabling certain roles is okay, maybe the mutation name can be a subject to change if this being a mechanic that disables wolves sounds offensive.

Massive Support
I know people who are HoH/Deaf (Even Vison impaired/blind) and this just feels insulting to those with disabilities imo. I also have some disabilities myself where i have poor eyesight myself and having moments where hearing isn't as good. Luckily not too often but still. I get how it feels to not hear.

Devs Should indeed change this one up cuz the  current way just gives me the implied message of (Those who are deaf/HoH can't do much in their life and those who can't see are worthless and there are Some that Will get offended later on, trust me >3>;)

Deaf/Blind can be limited in a realistic way though we gotta remember, we're playing as animals. Wolves and other animals have better senses than we do and we might as well be realistic about that.
Deaf can do pretty anything as a normal can do and should show that, With their own barriers
Blind could as well but somethings are better more than others like Herbalism, Mentor, Hunter can still be dangerous but senses can help big time esp as a tracker and maybe a finisher.

Support.  I understand that in limiting the roles they are trying to bring an element of grittiness or realism, but the limitations also seem arbitrary and in that sense not realistic.  I felt similarly about the congenital cataracts one not allowing wolves to take any roles at all (I checked again, and they can't even train for roles.  That is extremely unrealistic).  I was born with cataracts and they don't just cloud your eyes over the second you're born, it takes time and wouldn't prevent someone from learning a role.
