The night was still filled with the sound of people and passing cars, even when the sun had dipped below the horizon and the sky turned dark. It had always been busy throughout all hours of the day, but tonight, it was significantly quieter. Still louder than back home, a voice sizzled in the recesses of her mind. She silently agreed; adjusting from a suburban neighborhood in the south was nothing like this.

Quinn walked slowly, hands shoved in her jacket and hood drawn tight around her face. Faraway honks pierced the air every so often, but other than that, this street was completely devoid of any life. Rats and roaches scurried underfoot and papers tumbled by in the scarce breeze, giving it the sense of a dystopian wasteland, but Quinn knew better.

There were eyes everywhere.

She glanced up, her face expressionless; she couldn't let anyone know what she was truly feeling. To them, she was a willing candidate for their family, and she couldn't give up her one chance.

Someone's coming, the voice hissed again, and she tensed. A shadow peeled itself from the alleyway wall, walking towards her stiffly. She stopped in her tracks, pulling herself to her full height, staring at the woman directly in the eye. She recognized the woman; her best friend had often talked about her, but Quinn had never directly met her.

She was tall and pale, with long raven hair tied back in a tight ponytail. The streetlights reflected off of her light hazel eyes, which were downturned and lined with eyeliner (which was, Quinn admitted, extremely good).

"You must be Alabastor," the woman said, her voice taut and tone sharp. She was all business. Quinn nodded curtly, holding out her hand, the scarred flesh on the back peeking out from her sleeve. The other woman looked down her hooked nose, a look like something of disgust crossing her face before she turned abruptly and began walking away. She looked over her shoulder, glancing back. "Follow me, Alabastor. And keep your mouth shut, unless you want your tongue cut out."

Quinn swallowed a growl of anger down, following after her. What a major bitch.

Azarrath watched from the height of a building, perched on the corner of it like a gargoyle. Her lips peeled back in a wicked grin, Oh? Who is this? She thought, starting to follow the two as they moved deeper into mafia territory. She jumped from building to building, still somehow managing to stay quiet and keep sight of them. She had seen the woman leading the way before, she wasn't a particularly sunny woman. But she got the job done, and that was all that mattered. Something was.. different about the woman following behind her associate, and it was bothering her. What is it..?

The demon growled at herself for not being able to figure it out, but there was a sort of demonic energy. It couldn't be though, why would a demon want to possess her.. When they reached the end of the buildings and arrived at the center of mafia territory, Azzie scaled back down the building.  The only visible things in the dark were her glowing bright teal eyes, almost the same kind of wide as an owl's in the moment because of how curious she was. In moments the eyes were gone and she continued down the path, boots not making a sound on the cement. So strange.. I better keep an eye on her..

The woman ahead of her turned around, a scowl permeating her features. "Stay here," she ordered, and Quinn tilted her head, narrowing her own eyes. Well, eye. "Try anything idiotic and we won't hesitate to snuff you, super-powered or not."

Quinn felt her stomach twist like taffy; she still wasn't used to people knowing that she had powers.

That we have powers, firefly. Don't forget that I made you.

She scowled at the ground, mentally shoving the voice to the side, before giving the woman a curt nod of understanding. The woman strode away, heels clicking on the stone pavement, leaving Quinn with her thoughts and one very narcissistic shithead.

A twinge in her arm caused her to slap herself involuntarily, and she hollered in pain, clenching her fists. "Dammit, Pyro, the hell is wrong with you?!" she demanded angrily, rubbing the side of her face that was swiftly turning red. She nearly slapped her eyepatch off. Don't call me a shithead, and I won't retaliate, he said smugly, and she got the sudden urge to throttle him.

Someone cleared their throat, and Quinn whipped her head around, jumping up into a more proper stance. Her whole demeanor changed as she came face-to-face with the patriarch himself, The Duke. He was a large man, rings glinting on his fingers, his suit crisp and clean without a single crinkle. His receding hairline showed obvious signs of aging, but Quinn knew better to think she could defeat him in hand-to-hand combat; he was one of the most powerful super-powered humans in the country, with little to no rivals.

He had this place in the palm of his meaty hand.

"This is the girl?" he rumbled, looking down his large nose at her. Quinn tilted her chin up in confidence, puffing her chest out. He scoffed. "She looks pathetic, but perhaps she's got some spunk in her." He snapped his fingers and Quinn flinched. A man stepped forward, cracking his knuckles, sparks of electricity shooting out from his hands. He grinned maliciously, stalking forward, and Quinnlin tensed. This was the moment.

Get ready, firefly. This is our only chance.

Don't blow it.

The coal-skinned humanoid climbed onto a spear of stone off to the side, perching on top like a bird of prey surveying its next meal. Her head tilted to the side as she watched, she was always watching.. waiting for the perfect moment to strike. She made a confused face as the intriguing woman slapped herself and started talking to nothing. Mmmm.. looks like I was right after all.. She thought, grimly. Though a grin fought the frown that was trying to tug at her lips. Her eyes widened as she noticed the boss, straightening up immediately. He knew she was here, he always knew where everyone was, and it was just as unnerving as it was thrilling.

Her spike ended tail curved and twisted in the air as she watched the interaction with bated breath. So, this woman is.. joining us? Something's fishy.. but, if the boss is letting her in, she cant be planning anything.. right? She pondered, her brows furrowing as she watched the scarred woman. There was a dangerous air to her, sure, but it didn't scare Azzie. Not much did anymore, but it was a win for her so she didn't care much. When sparks flew from one of The Dukes' men's fingers, she knew what was happening and delighted in it. Her hands clapped together silently as her tail started... wagging? Who knows.

With a burst of crackling energy, the man lunged forward, sparks flying from his limbs. He threw a punch at Quinn's head with lightning speed, but somehow, he missed. He swiftly recovered but paused for a second at the transformation Quinn underwent.

The boss, watching the fight unfold before him, allowed himself to smirk.

Quinn's body was engulfed in flames, sprouting out from her scars and spreading along her skin, solidifying into what seemed to be a bipedal salamander made of fire. Her -- no, their -- tail lashed as they lowered themself to the ground, giving an eerie, toothy grin. It was sadistic and malicious and terrifying to witness. Pupilless, pale white eyes were wide and talons flexed, curving from their hands.

Letting out a bellow, the man shot forth a blast of electric currents, hissing as it snaked through the air. Almost immediately, the creature leaped into the air, muscles tensing underneath the flames. They landed on the man's shoulders, and as he let out a scream of pain, they kicked off of him, spinning midair. They skidded to a stop, teeth bared, as the man began to pat himself out.

Another woman stepped out from behind The Duke and waved her hand in the air, pulling some water out of a nearby ditch. Water manipulator, Quinn whispered to her companion, and the beast let out a low growl in response. The woman dumped the water on the man, his clothes sizzling as the fire was put out. The smell of burnt clothes filled the air.

The test was over as quick as it had begun.

As Quinn took back over, the flames receded, and she shrank back to being a scarred young woman. She wiped her brow, glancing back at The Duke. He lifted his chin before nodding in approval. "We could use more fire powers with us," he said thoughtfully, before waving the electric man away. With a loud clap and a chortle, he spread his arms wide.

"Welcome to the family, dear Quinnlin!"

He may seem joyful, but there was no kindness in those eyes. Only malicious intent. It made her stomach turn in anger, but she bit her tongue. She bowed her head to The Duke, showing her respect, as the crowd began to disperse. The Duke turned to the pale woman beside him, her eyes still narrowed at Quinn. "Take her to her room, Nicky, won't you, dear? Tell her the rules, you know the drill." He turned around and waved them away, before returning to the building he had emerged from.

The woman called Nicky glared at Quinn, before rolling her eyes and turning around. "Follow me." Without waiting for Quinn's response, she clicked away, leaving Quinn to catch up.

We're in.

Yeah, I know that, dumbass. I'm the one in control right now, remember?

Azarrath's eyes widened as the salamander burst forth, and stayed glued to the creature as it fought. Demon, demon, demon.. This is going to be an entertaining time.. She started crawling along the wall, nails digging into the brick, and jumping down when she was right next to Nicky and... Quinnlin. What a nice name.. She saluted the longstanding mafia member before looking at the other woman. "Whatcha doin' Nicky?" She asked, knowing full well what was happening. She looked at Quinn, mischief glinting in her glowing teal eyes. "And who's this?" In a flash she was on the other side of her, looking her over. She didnt even spare an extra glance at the burn scars. She knew where they came from now, so her interest had been lost.

"What's your friend's name?" She asked, raising a blue eyebrow at her. Azzie's tail curled around one of her legs, stepping back and looking between Nicky and Quinn. "Looks like there's no love lost here." She huffed, crossing her arms. "Well? Come on. Off to the room we go!" She said, starting to march like she was in a marching band.

Quinn saw something jump down from the walls, and she yelped in surprise, reeling back. She narrowed her eyes at what looked like a moving shadow before she noticed that it was... some sort of creature. It vaguely resembled a human, except it very much wasn't. "Whatcha doin', Nicky?" the stranger said in a sing-song voice.

The woman in front of her glared at the stranger, her face twisting in disgust. She remained silent, still walking. Quinn blinked in shock, looking between the woman and the stranger, whose eyes glowed bright blue. Freaky, the voice said, and she had to agree. They were so unsettling, it was like they pierced right through them.

Quinn jumped again, swallowing down a squawk of surprise as the woman creature appeared on Quinn's other side, examining her closely. "And who's this?"

"None of your damn business," said a raspy voice unlike Quinn's, and she slapped her hand to her mouth. DUDE. Shut UP.

The inner voice whined like a child. She should learn some manners then, it grumbled, retreating into her background thoughts. She grimaced sheepishly at the woman, before watching in confusion as she marched away. "Wha--" she uttered in bafflement, before cutting herself off and following after them.

After a bit of walking, they arrived at a tall building. People stood outside, chatting in low tones, but froze as they saw the three. All of them, almost simultaneously, stood straighter and saluted Nicky as she passed, before staring at Quinn with calculating eyes. She lifted her chin. She couldn't show weakness.

"You will be staying here," Nicky said without turning around. She gestured to the building before crossing her arms behind her back. "Your room has already been chosen for you. We provide housing for all members."

She giggled at the voice that told her to mind her business, blowing the other demon a kiss. "How cute!" She said, continuing to march forwards. She snorted when the people started saluting, mocking them by copying their body movements and muttering something under her breath. She secretly stuck her tongue out at them, flipping her middle finger up but acting like she was only pushing a stray hair behind her ear.

When the three, well technically four, arrived at the door, Azzie bowed to them with an arm pointed to the room. "May not be the ritz. Well-" She took a break to laugh, "its probably the closest to the ritz you can get, so enjoy." She grabbed onto the wall, scaling halfway up the wall before looking back down again and giving Quinn a wink. "I'll see you soon." She promised, before continuing up and disappearing onto the roof.

As Azarrath disappeared over the roof, Nicky's whole demeanor changed, as if she had been holding herself back from slapping something. With the air of someone having to deal with a screaming toddler, she rubbed the space between her eyes, muttering something in a different language under her breath.

Taking a deep breath, Nicky folded her arms behind her back, looking down at Quinn again. "That was the lovely Azarrath," she said, her tone thick with sarcasm. "And I suspect she'll be bugging you for the next week or so. It's a sort of ritual she has, to annoy the living shit out of newcomers." She waved her hand dismissively. "She'll tire of it eventually. Anyways, you can get your key from the man at the desk."

Leaning closer to Quinn, she lowered her voice. "All of your movements will be closely monitored. Don't fuck up, hm?" With a turn, she briskly walked away, leaving Quinn silently fuming.

Damn prick, thought the voice, and she fought to restrain a snort. Gotta stay cool, she replied, running her fingers through her spiked hair. Just for a bit. Just until we can tear this place down.

Don't get distracted, firefly. You remember what happened last time you got distracted, I trust?

"I thought I told you to not bring that up anymore," she hissed under her breath, opening the door and nodding to the man behind the counter. He was scraggly-looking, with a mop of dirty blonde hair on top of his head. "Name and pronouns?" he said in a squeaky, cracking voice. He couldn't have been more than sixteen.

"Quinnlin Alabastor," she replied, tapping her fingers on the counter. "And she/her." He squinted at her. "I'm gonna need the full name, please," he said. She got the odd sensation that she was looking through her.

"And the name of your internal companion."

She felt the pit of her stomach drop. Shit, she thought, mentally freaking out. What was his power? Could he read her mind?

"Q-Quinnlin Rose Alabastor," she stuttered out, swallowing the lump in her throat. "And his preferred name is Pyromaniac. No last name."

The teenager squinted harder at her, but that seemed to satisfy him, as he turned around in his office chair and opened a drawer. A moment of clinking around later and some room keys were dropped into her hand. "Third floor, second hallway, three doors on your left," he squeaked, before looking down at the comic book he had been reading. Quinn turned, and he spoke up again. "Oh, yeah, you'll have to take the stairs," he said, not looking up from his book. "Elevator's broken."

Quinn groaned internally, before beginning her journey up the three flights.
