It was a last-ditch effort.

The four clans had been fighting off seasons of an unnamed plague for moons, and there was no hope in sight. Mothers watched in tangible grief as their kits fell ill with no answer or cure, and beloved elders quickly came to draw their last breath, all too soon. Medicine cats begged their ancestors for help, for answers- some even turned to the Dark Forest out of desperation for a resolve, all to receive no solution.

But the clans weren't the only ones dying. Plants had wilted, trees had withered away and turned to a sickening black, and even the water seemed more gray than usual. Prey was no longer running, no- it was falling from the sky, dropping ill and dead at the paws of the tired warriors.

First it was four, then it was three. Before long, the two remaining clans were left with no choice but to join forces in hopes of finding strength in numbers. ShadowClan and ThunderClan bitterly swallowed their generation-long rivalry in hopes of waiting out the relentless plague, but still warriors fell.

It was then that StarClan had spoken: they must leave, to follow the bright northern star to find their safe haven. For countless generations, the clans had occupied the Valley, and it was tough to leave. It was hard to StarClan to let go of this sentimental place, but they had to save their descendants.

The clans were nervous. Were they strong enough to survive the journey north? The two leaders bickered, with ShadowClan's leave adamant on staying in the Valley, their home. But ThunderClan's leader felt they had no other choice. The decision split the semi-united clan to a core, until the dawn before they left. ShadowClan's leader had perished in their sleep- was it StarClan's way of saying they had to leave?

With one leader and two deputies, the beaten warriors of the newly-named "StormClan" trekked northward together. They had no choice now- surely StarClan had spoken. For days on end, they followed the northern star at night, crossing steep mountains in blinding fog. That was, until they arrived in the Grove on that faithful day. When the warriors rose at night to travel once more, the stars had vanished. There was nothing but a blackened sky and a lonely moon.

They lost their families.
They lost StarClan.
And now, they have lost their way.

Setting

Our warrior cat roleplay takes place in a semi-mountainous region known as the "Grove". The terrain is unstable and very rocky, but tall coniferous trees are also very plentiful (so plentiful that it can be difficult to see at sunset in the forest). Camp is set in the bottom of the mountain basin in front of a cold, glassy lake. Here, moss is very heavy, which makes it dangerous and slippery for cats not-so-good on their paws. Fog is very heavy and frequent.

Current season: early leaf-fall

Applestar - Leader - He/him - Location: Camp

The fog had settled as the sun slowly rose above the rough pine-dotted horizon, dying the fog a fiery-orange. The morning was chilly, perhaps colder than it ever was in the Valley they'd all once called home. Applestar was diligently watching the sunrise as thoughts plagued his mind, trying to slap together a plan for his lost clan. He bitterly wished Darkstar was there to guide him, regardless of the awkward relationship he might potentially hold with his secret father. He couldn't help but wonder if the tom, now in StarClan, knew the truth. Did the ancestors tell him? Did he even get to make it to StarClan if the stars had vanished...?

With his fur fluffed in order to keep warm, the ginger tom released a heavy sigh in the form of a plume of smoke. His whiskers were heavy, drooping from the weight of the morning dew. He pitied the elders- surely, all this damp coolness made their joints creak and groan. He wanted to get them out of there, it was just a matter of figuring out where they were supposed to go. Surely StarClan didn't mean for this to be their home?

...If StarClan was still there, after all.

Applestar shook his head. No, no- he had to have hope in their ancestors during such bleak times. Hope was all they really had left. Surely the medicine cats could come up with an answer if they just found the perfect place to commune with their ancestors. But that was the "later", and he needed to focus on the "now". Now, they needed a proper camp. Now, they needed their bellies to be full. Now, they needed to make this place a temporary home.

He watched in silence as the sun's golden reflection hit the stretch of still water before him. Admittedly, it was a beautiful location, but its beauty was deceiving. The moss was slippery, the rocks were sharp, the chill wind liked to bite back...and who knew what all could possibly be out there, waiting for them.

Was it their home?
...Or was it their demise?

Whitepaw-apprentice-he/him-location: camp
Whitpaw lay shivering in his nest, his paws sore and his belly empty.
He wished they had never left the valley. It felt strange to nest on wet moss but fog had blanketed the valley since moon high and there had been no time for it to dry. Shaking himself Whitepaw got to his feet, hoping to find his mentor soon for training.

Fadedpaw - MCA - she/they - Location: Medicine Den

The apprentice pulled back from the cat in front of her, peeling the last of the ticks out of Lightingflash's fur. The elder came seeking mouse bile treatment just earlier this week, and it seemed that all of his favorite resting spots were also home to a family of ticks, just to his luck. "You're all set." She said, packing up the rest of the mouse bile. There was still some left, and she'd rather store what little they have than just throwing anything out. "Thank you, dear." The tom said, rising up, and stretching out his legs and back. He had to crouch low for the smaller cat to be able to reach him. He left, and Fadedpaw finished cleaning up.

They enjoyed becoming a medicine cat, as if it was their calling. It was fascinating, learning the different ways one could use a single plant. From the leaves, to the stem, and the seeds, a plant could cure many wounds or sicknesses if just the right part was used. That was what Fadedpaw enjoyed about their position, not picking ticks out of elders who don't learn from their mistakes. But nevermind, they knew it was still an important part of the role, and it helped them to think Heatherstump had been in this exact situation during his apprenticeship.

She stretched herself out as Lightningflash was the last cat who needed help at the moment, and returned to the stores with the leftover mouse bile. She looked around for Heatherstump, perhaps there was something he needed help with that was more exciting than old cats and countless ticks.

Stormclaw - Warrior - he/him - Location: Camp

Stormclaw padded out of the Warriors den and stretched his limbs out slowly before giving his fluffy pelt a good shake. It felt good to stretch out, and he gave a small sigh. He looked around curiously, wondering if there was a patrol he could join. His paws itched to be doing something instead of just standing around feeling useless. Part of him missed the Valley, it was where he had been born and it was where his (adoptive) parents were buried. His mother had been a retired queen and she had passed not long before they had left the Valley, and so he was still grieving for her. She and her mate, his father, had taken him in as a helpless kit and he would always be grateful for the love and support they had given him growing up. His father had passed a few seasons before, and he prayed to Star clan that his parents were together in Starclan.

Starclan.... Stormclaw glanced skyward and studied the fading stars as the sun began to take over the sky. Had Honeysong made it to Starclan? Was she with Redstorm now? Or had Starclan faded from existence and left their living descendants to fend for themselves. The thought made his fur prickle with unease, he didn't like the idea of not ever seeing his parents again. He had barely gotten to say goodbye to Honeysong before her sickness had taken her. Shaking his head to dismiss the thought, Stormclaw looked around the camp again. He then realized that he was not the only cat awake.

HeatherStump - Medicine Cat - He/They - Location: Medicine Den

The lynx point tom grumbled about an injury as he worked on CraneStep's small injury on her side. "You know, you really need to stop getting into so much trouble." He said, voice laced with concern as he chewed some comfrey into a poultice and applied it to the scarred up molly's side. "Eh, I'll be alright." She said, disregarding his concerns. He just sighed and put cobwebs over the poultice. "Now remember, you've got to rest. No galavanting around, stay right here for the next day or two." He said sternly, knowing she knew better than to argue with him. She just huffed and nodded.

He smiled, bidding her a good rest and taking the leftover materials back to the herb stores. He noticed that Fadedpaw was finished after he exited the stores, making his way over to her. "Would you rather stay here and learn about herbs, or go on an herb run with me for a more paws on lesson?" He questioned her. He saw a lot of himself in her, especially their shared dislike of de-ticking the elders. He knew if his mentor had asked him to go on an herb run with her, he would've been overjoyed.

He got a sharp phantom pain in his back right paw and looked back. Oh, right. He didnt have one. He rolled his eyes at the missing limb, focusing back on his apprentice.

|| Sparrowsong - Queen - She/her - Location: Camp ||

The tabby queen purred quietly, tail tip flicking as she carefully cleaned off the kit. The morning was cold, it wouldn't do well to let the young one be cold either. Mosskit needed to be warm and safe, needed to be healthy and strong - she paused at his small mew of discomfort, bringing him closer to her fur.

She needed to get up soon, get water, stretch. But he was comfortable now. There were no other queens to help either... settling her head on her paws, Sparrowsong watched the outside area.

Applestar and Stormclaw were awake, talking. The med cats were also talking, she could barely hear them, and the whine of a kit soon followed, likely Whitepaw. It really was just him, Fadedpaw and Mosskit.... if the kit survived... no! It's your last kit, they will survive. Sparrowsong thought with a shift of positions, as though making it final in her mind.

Fadedpaw - MCA - she/they - Location: Medicine Den

Her eyes lit up. A new land with new herbs, Fadedpaw felt her heart pick up. So many new things she could learn, and new possibilities for different medicines. Her eyes were practically shining at his question. She nodded, "Oh yes! Heatherstump I'd love to!" She stumbled over herself running to the entrance, getting back up and looking over her shoulder. "We should go now! We'd have all day to explore and find every new herbs that we can!"

But as she stood there, a dejected Whitepaw came up to them, asking about food and herbs. Her stomach rumbled too at the mention, she looked at him, then back to Heatherstump.

Lostsoul - Outsider - he/him - Location: the Mooncave

He could feel himself slowly waking up, his limbs stiff and sore from the previous day's exploration. The moonstone was dull, lifeless, and it seemed StarClan abandoned him, perhaps they died out with the last of the clan cats. He got up, stretching, hearing the sound of his bones cracking. It was a new day of aimlessness.

He looked around what he caved his new, temporary, home. The previous sacred land of the medicine cats and leaders, turned into a shoddy den. A half made, uncomfortable nest. A "freshkill pile", that was empty, save for bits of fur and feathers. And whatever herbs he could remember laid out on the floor. Lostpaw, no, now he was Lostsoul. The new name was still something to get used to, he had just given it to himself yesterday morning after his first night in the cave. Luckily, the large opening above the stone provided him with a clock, that he could tell what time of day it was. The sky was blue, sun not yet at its highest, he knew it was mid morning, between sunrise and sun high.

Lostsoul exited the cave, wandering through the seemingly endless tunnel that led to it, before he finally reached daylight again. He looked around, sniffing, considering. It'd be easier to catch prey that scurried around near the highstone's base, but it'd be more plentiful, and he'd be able to gather more food for later in the day if he crossed over to the moor. The only issue was the thunderpath. It had become more busy, more twolegs that could snatch him up again.

In the end, he figured it wasn't worth it, beginning his search for breakfast, ears twitching every now and then to remind him of his surroundings.
