May 17th - International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

I see a lot of threads pop up for various holidays and events but I haven't seen one about this last year so I want to raise a bit of awareness because it seems like a good chunk of users are LGBT+ folks and not everyone is even aware that this is an annual thing.

May 17th marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
For the unaware, the date was chosen to commemorate the removal of homosexuality from the list of recognised diseases, and the main purpose is to raise awareness of the prejudice, cruelty, discrimination, and abuse faced by LGBT+ individuals around the globe. If you want to read more about it, there is a Wikipedia page you can check out for more information.

Not everyone has someone in their life to guide them through things like these so I wanted to make a thread to say: you're not alone, you're not the first to experience this kind of thing, and if you don't have people around you who can be supportive, please don't hesitate to seek them in safe spaces online. If you're having a tough time today, my inbox is completely open, feel free to message if you need to vent.

Likewise, if you have friends you haven't heard from in a while, this is a wonderful excuse to break the ice and check in on them to see whether they're okay and reassure them if they're not. It can be a very tough day for some, especially older generations that may have lost people dear to them already.

It's also a day of hope. That there are struggles and hurdles doesn't mean it's not okay to celebrate what progress has been made thus far and look forward to a new, better future than our predecessors had. Hold onto hope and be proud of those who paved the road before us and allowed us room to grow.

I have a friend less this year so I'm going to spend it checking in on everyone I love. I'm going to hug my dog, paint my nails, play with make-up until I look like a parrot, and probably visit some people since it's raining too much to head out. I refuse to let this day be anything but full of good memories for myself and those close to me.

How are you spending the day?
