Herbalist-Related Questions

So I just got my first Herbalist going and I'm trying to make the most of him!

With Scouts, it's easy. You send them out Scouting. With Hunters, you send them out hunting in the right job! With Pupsitters, they watch pups.

Herbalists have more than one option though. Foraging, Mixing Medicines, and Researching. So which one is best to use to get him more proficiency? Is it worth getting proficiency up before researching or no?

Any help is much appreciated!

I would say just do what you need. Try to research all medicine as soon as you can, keep nice med storage in case you suddenly have several ill wolves and just forage when you're low on herbs. Keep your herbalist busy to raise proficiency and to get reduced diagnose cost.

To offer a different opinion, I actually mostly researched and crafted new recipes as I needed them and/or had the herbs for it. I personally think open wound salves is the first one you should research since hunters get it a lot, diarrhea a close second (I love stuff, so I roll in poop a lot). Next up, I focused on having at least one of all the lethal ones (Lethal: Distemper, Heatstroke, Infection, Poison, Pox (pups)) to be prepared. I tried to craft the infectious ones earlier rather than later as well but that was more dependant on what herbs I had on hand.

Exchanging herbs 3:1 takes a lot out of your hoard in the beginning, so I tried to minimize how often I had to use it and compared if simply buying it wasn't cheaper.

I recommend later on crafting the Cure-for-All since it 1. gives the wolf a 3 rollover immunity and 2. can be used without diagnosing (helpful if you're training up a new herbalist and it costs alot). The rich healing salve however is not really worth it. It takes 15 herbs for 20HP per use in comparison to 2 herbs for 10HP per use in the normal one.

For leveling up, fastest is propably to forage throughout the day (it only takes 1hour compared to crafting which is 1:30h in the beginning if I remember correctly?) and then let your energy rise to 100% before bed and queue up 5 recipes. You cannot queue foraging so you are not "wasting" the time you are sleeping. That way you wake up with new recipes, usually a full energy bar and can go back to foraging straight away. Crafting also takes less time the higher your level is, so keep that in mind.

Thank you both for the help! I appreciate it.

I like the idea of doing some foraging first to build up my stocks and then building the "most important" ones. I'm on most of the day so I like to keep "busy" as I can and use energy.

And I didn't even realize you could queue up medicines! Thank you for letting me know that's really helpful too.

Another Herbalist related question!

Is Foraging any random herbs? Or is it just herbs found in your home biome?

Just the herbs in your home biome.

@Sienna Snow
Ah, good to know, thank you! I was looking at the guides, but most of them don't mention details about Foraging. Just that a Herbalist CAN Forage. Thank you!

EDITED TO ADD: Oops. Pfft, teach me to read more carefully instead of a quick scan.

I have a question too !

Do the stats of the wolf have any impact ?

A herbalist favours high wisdom and smarts stats.

Tala mentions that Smarts and Wisdom helps, but it doesn't seem to be fully implemented yet according to the guides I've seen.

So basically any wolf you have can be your Herbalist.
