Genetic Questions Free-For-All

I've been trying to get a better understanding of genetics by using the wardrobe and looking at random wolves. I figured it might be good to have a place to ask specific questions I don't remember seeing in the guides. Feel free to submit your own and we can learn together.

How are markings expressed when there are different colors of the same marking under multiple slots? Can everything with a gradient mix? How are multiple markings at 100% chosen?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you're asking about what it looks like to have two of the same markings on one wolf, in different colors? They shade together. I've seen people put a red version and a white version of a marking on a wolf to make it look like they have a pink version of that marking.

When generating puppies, the game decides if the pup will inherit a marking in a slot, then decides what the opacity will be based on the opacities the parents have in that slot - regardless of if they have the same marking. So if both parents have a 100% marking in slot 1, but they're different markings, then if the puppy inherits a slot 1 marking it will have 90-100% opacity. If one parent has a 100% opacity marking and the other parent has no marking, the puppy's marking will be about 50% opacity.

I hope that made sense! I did a major deep dive into how the geneticsΒ  work when I first started playing wolvden.

Thanks. I was thinking more of if they are the same marking. I used tail tip as an example. It seems wolves with both 100% opacity for back and white tail tips would just have one or the other.

Yes, mostly if your wolves have different coloured marks in the same spot, the pup can have one or the other. But there are combo colours for some marks too! For example a white and black dilution can create a silver dilution for the puppy! And this can happen even if the marks are not the same. Though all mark types do not have combo colours.

Here is a visual chart of all the combo colours by Skudde.

Thanks!

Next question- does slot number effect how markings interact? Like markings that color the same part of the body. Do you want to put the most "important" marking in slot 1 to have the best chance of showing well in offspring?

Slot numbers indicate how the markings are layered on the wolf.
Slot 10 is the one in top of all the others, while slot 1 is the one underneath all the markings.
So, if you want for a marking to be the most visible possible and not covered by others marking, you put it in slot 10.

For example, if you go to the wardrobe an put Black Patchy Unders in slot 10 and White Toes in slot 9, you can see that White Toes is completely covered by the other marking and it's not visible. If you swap them, White Toes become visible because it's on top of Black Patchy Unders.
Of course, this happens at 100% opacity. With lower opacity, some markings in a high slot might still be visible.

Thanks! Glad I didn't start without knowing that.

Next question- Is opacity accurate? Using black markings on white as an example, it seems like markings lighten quicker than they should in proportion to their percentage. Could be the subtleties of the shading. Hard to tell.
