Dimitri Belikov

Dimitri Belikov (Russian: Димитрий Беликов ) is a dhampir, and the only son of Randall Ivashkov and Olena Belikova. He is a famous guardian. His first charge was his best friend, Ivan Zeklos, who was killed when he was off duty. He then became the guardian of Vasilisa Dragomir. When Lissa won the throne, he asked to be assigned to the Queen's partner, Christian Ozera. He is the fiancé and former combat instructor/mentor of the lead character of the series, Rosemarie Hathaway. He is also the second known person to be restored from his Strigoi state through spirit.
Dimitri Belikova (born 3rd December 1990; Baia, Russia) is the only son of Olena Belikova, a Russian Dhampir, and Randall Ivashkov, an abusive royal Moroi. He is the younger brother of Karolina Belikova and Sonya Belikova and the older brother of viktoria Belikova. Despite having been raised in a large dhampir commune - a community of Blood whores and their offspring - he grew up in a loving environment thanks to his mother and grandmother. After witnessing years of the continuous abuse of his mother by his father, he beat his father up to the point he refused to return to Baia at the age of thirteen.
While attending St Basil's Academy in Russia, he became friends with the royal Moroi, Ivan Zeklos, who later became his charge upon his graduation. Under the guidance of his mentor Galina, Dimitri graduated with high grades and honours. While on holiday a few years after his graduation, Ivan and his other guardian were attacked and killed by Strigoi.
Dimitri was then sent to America, where he was tasked to find and retrieve Princess Vasilisa Dragomir, a royal Moroi who fled St. Vladimir's Academy in her sophomore year. After a year's investigation, Dimitri tracked her in Portland, Oregon. Upon their return to St. Vladimir's, he was assigned as Vasilisa's guardian. Over the next few months, he began to fall in love with his student, Rosemarie Hathaway, who left the academy two years earlier with Lissa.

Vampire Academy

Joined by a team of Academy guardians, Dimitri was sent to locate and retrieve Vasilisa Dragomir and Rosemarie Hathaway. He is present during the pair's questioning at the hands of Headmistress Kirova and speaks up on Rose's behalf when Kirova threatens to expel her. After, Dimitri reluctantly agrees to become Rose's mentor to help her catch up to her classmates' level of training; he proves to be a patient and wise teacher.
There is an inevitable attraction between the two; Rose's infatuation of her mentor soon turns into love, which in turn reluctantly (and dangerously) becomes mutual. Unfortunately, both are also aware it can never progress into a relationship due to their responsibilities as guardians.

Frostbite

Dimitri takes Rose to the residence of Arthur Schoenberg, a retired legendary guardian chosen to protect one of the Moroi royal families. Upon their arrival, they're shocked to find him and the Moroi murdered in a Strigoi attack. More Strigoi massacres follow, with Mia Rinaldi's mother being one of the victims. Soon after, Rose discovers where the Strigoi are hiding; she is insistent on not revealing the location to anyone but ends up stubbornly telling fellow guardian and friend, Mason Ashford. This leads to him, Eddie Castile, and Mia to going on a quest of vengance to kill the Strigoi themselves, however none are to be found. Rose discovers their plans and sneaks out to stop them with the help of Christian Ozera. Not long after convincing them to come back, Rose and the others are kidnapped by humans working for the Stragoi. Eventually, when they attempt to escape from the kidnapper's basement, Rose is attacked by the head Strigoi, Isaiah, and his partner, Elena; they all make it out into the light except Rose. Mason is later killed by Isaiah during his attempt to rescue her. In a burst of rage, Rose kills Elena and then beheads Isaiah with a dull sword while he was distracted by Mia's Water (element). After, a devastated Rose holds Mason's dead body in her arms. His body is pried from her arms when Dimitri, Janine Hathaway, and other guardians arrive on the scene and proceed to get her home to St. Vladimir's.

Shadow Kiss

Dimitri encounters Rose during his watch of the Academy grounds, after the latter sneaks out of her dormitory after a disturbing "dream" caused by Lissa - they chat. As Dimitri walks Rose back to her dormitory, Alberta appears, and Rose is forced to hide in the bushes as Dimitri and Alberta discuss the changes in Dimitri's training times for the next few weeks. Because Dimitri is going to Victor Dashkov's trial, he must swap training sessions with other guardians. Dimitri feels uncomfortable during the conversation, since he knows Rose is listening and that she's not meant to know about Victor's trial, and ends the discussion quickly so that she doesn't learn too much about it. After Alberta leaves Dimitri faces Rose's anger at not being told about the trial, and how he refuses to convince Alberta to let her, Lissa and Christian testify, since Dimitri claims he doesn't have enough influence to do that.
Just after the novices receive their assignments for the field experience, Dimitri is present with Alberta when Rose comes up to them to complain about her assignment. Though initially furious, Rose calms down when Dimitri and Alberta rationally explain to her the reasons for the assignment. When Rose is accused of purposefully refusing to protect her Moroi during her first Strigoi attack, Dimitri defends her, knowing that she would never take revenge in such a petty way. His words help convince the committee to keep Rose in the field experience and only give her one day of community service as a punishment. After the session has ended, Dimitri questions Rose on the real reason for her freezing up, but she refuses to tell him the truth, instead claiming that she was taken by surprise and scared. Dimitri doesn't believe her, but can't force her to admit the truth to him.
During Rose's day of community service, Dimitri shows up to help her, just so he can spend time with her.
After Adrian pulls some strings to allow Rose, Lissa and Christian to attend Victor's trial, Rose is sure that Dimitri finally pulled through for her, but he tells her that he didn't do anything. During the flight, when Rose starts having a migraine, Dimitri is concerned for her. In Royal Court, Rose shows up at his door with a note from Victor Dashkov implying that he will reveal Rose and Dimitri's relationship at the trial, as Rose had feared he would.
Realizing that Victor wants something of Rose, Dimitri arranges for them both to speak to him in his cell, to discover what he wants. While they wait for the right time to go there, Dimitri apologizes to Rose for not being able to get her to the trial, feeling as if he had let her down. Rose, to his gratitude, tells him that he didn't let her down and has never let her down, and that she'd acted like a 'total brat' regarding the matter. While speaking to Victor, Dimitri demands to know why he wanted to see Rose, but Victor refuses to give a clear answer, other than that he wanted to hear about Lissa. To his surprise, Rose asks Victor questions about death and ghosts, similar to what she asked the priest on their day of community service. When Victor points out that he could reveal Dimitri and Rose's relationship in the court-room despite having gotten what he wanted, Dimitri threatens him in a deadly tone, which shocks Rose.
The next morning, Dimitri sends a package of formal guardian clothes to Rose's room, along with a note to wear her hair up. When testifying during the trial, Dimitri lies under oath when he is questioned about the delay in alerting the Academy of Lissa's abduction, stating that it was because Victor had compelled Rose to attack him. Rose notes that it pains him to lie, but he does it because he has no other choice.
Shortly before the scheduled flight back to the Academy, Dimitri comes to Rhonda's office to collect Rose and Lissa, who had been given tarot readings. Rhonda convinces Dimitri to stay for a moment and receive his own tarot reading, as he appears to be a mystery she wants to solve. The cards Rhonda deals out for Dimitri are the Knight of Rods, the Wheel of Fortune, and the Five of Cups. Rhonda tells Dimitri that he 'will lose what you value most, so treasure it while you can. The wheel is turning, always turning.' Dimitri takes the reading seriously and thanks Rhonda politely before he, Rose and Lissa leave for their flight.
When Rose and the others are on the plane going back to the Academy from the Royal Court, Rose suddenly appears to have a mental breakdown, screaming "Make them go away!" and tries to get out of her seat, throwing her hands in the air before she passes out. When they get back to the academy, Alberta and Dimitri send Rose straight to the medic clinic and question her when she wakes up about what happened on the plane. Rose, feeling she shouldn't lie to her interrogators, gives in. She tells them and Dr. Olendzki about the ghosts she has been seeing, and how upset and shocked she was. Without her present, Dr. Olzenski later tells Alberta and Dimitri Rose appears to be having a "mental breakdown", which might force her to leave her guardian classes. Rose eavesdrops and is upset by what is said; throwing open the door and tries to reason with them. After not getting exactly what she wants, Rose is cut short of field experience.
When they are alone, Dimitri demands to know why Rose did not tell him this earlier, revealing he was terrified for her on the plane. Rose tells him that she refused to tell him because she thought that he wouldn't believe her.
One day, Rose accidentally slips into Lissa's mind and discovers that Jesse is torturing her, trying to make her fight him with compulsion. Suffering, Lissa starts to go into a spirit frenzy because of the dark feelings slipping into her. She attacks him with her powers, making him see hallucinations of spiders crawling over his body. Rose hurries over and tries to stop Lissa, insisting "[I]t isn't you". She absorbs the dark feelings from Lissa and becomes possessed by them, causing her to be filled with the desire to hurt Jesse - she attacks him. Alberta has Dimitri take Rose away to calm down.
Dimitri takes her to a nearby cabin to patch up some minor injuries and figure out what's wrong. But when their conversation takes a turn for the worst, Dimitri pins her with his body after she tries escaping and helps her fight her bloodlust. Rose and Dimitri end up have sex in the cabin - Rose's first time.
When they leave, they discuss how to balance their guardian duties with their relationship. Their plans are quickly cut short when Rose sees Mason again. He warns her there are Strigoi on campus. Dimitri implores Rose, "Tell the guardians buria." Rose runs to warn the school guardians, while Dimitri remains behind to fight the Strigoi.
The campus goes under lock-down, but those who were outside are kidnapped by the Strigoi. After she learns that Eddie was among the ones taken, Rose gets the guardians to conduct a rescue mission, and Mason helps her find the Strigoi.
Just as the assault team are about to escape, several more Strigoi ambush them. Nathan, a blonde Strigoi, overwhelms Dimitri and bites him. Rose wants to stay and go back for him, but her mother refuses to let her. Mason reluctantly informs Rose Dimitri was turned into a Strigoi, before fading away and finding peace. Rose drops out of school and leaves Lissa to look for Dimitri in Russia and kill him, using funds given to her by Adrian Ivashkov.

Blood Promise

During Shadow Kiss, Strigoi get into the school and attack the students, taking many prisoners. When the guardians go on a rescue mission to drive them from their hiding place and retake the prisoners, Dimitri is taken and turned, then disappears. In Blood Promise, Rose finds Dimitri. He is shown to have accepted his fate, and even prefers the life of a Strigoi to the enslavement of being a guardian. He attempts to convince Rose to let him turn her, as he has not lost his lust for her. His affection would never be the same, because Strigoi don't see beauty, only things that will gain them power, help their personal image, etc.

Spirit Bound

During Spirit Bound, Rose finds a way to change a Strigoi back to their previous self using Spirit, but strictly tells Lissa that she would never allow her to do it. However, Lissa secretly uses her spirit to charms a stake and at the climax of the novel, stakes Dimitri through the heart, changing Dimitri from a Strigoi to a guilty and heartbroken dhampir.
Dimitri states he owes his life to Lissa, and, though he doesn't voice it, he knows that he still owes his life to Rose, too. He is filled with guilt at what he did to Rose in Siberia, and decides that it is best for him to stay away from her. Dimitri feels that it is impossible to forgive himself for what he did as a Strigoi. He repeatedly pushes himself away from Rose when she tries to get closer again. Eventually he becomes so desperate to keep her away, he lies that he does not love her any more. "Love fades. Mine has." This sits with Rose for a long time and she tries to get over Dimitri, believing that if she is to accept that he has moved on, she should too. No matter what she tells herself, she never truly accepts it

Last Sacrifice

In Last Sacrifice, Dimitri escapes the Court with Rose, convicted murderess of the late queen Tatiana, further convincing people that he is a Strigoi. During the journey they come across many different gangs of Strigoi. Dimitri has to call, Boris a previous Strigoi accomplice and pretend to be a Strigoi. Rose and Sydney thought that the experience was terrifying, and his mood was awful afterwards.Once they meet Donovan, he nearly has a mental breakdown from the crushing guilt and memories of being Strigoi. Rose manages to help him by telling him to find the beauty in life, as Strigoi can't see it. On the entire journey, Dimitri begins to forgive himself more and more as his relationship with Rose grows stronger.

Bloodlines (series)

Dimitri makes various appearances in the spin-off series Bloodlines. These appearances are in Bloodlines (2011), The Golden Lily (2012), Silver Shadows (2014) and The Ruby Circle (2015).

Physical Appearance

Dimitri Belikov is described as extremely handsome and attractive; standing tall at an impressive 6ft7 in with a long, lean, and very muscular physique. he possesses dark brown eyes and shoulder-length brown hair which is often tied back into a short ponytail. Like most guardians, Dimitri has multiple Molnija marks on the back of his neck; each represents a Strigoi he killed.

Personality

Dimitri is a quiet, soldier-like man who at first appears stoic. His emotions can be hard to read most of the time (due to his guardian 'mask'). He can appear gruff and strict at first, although he does show some acts of kindness, deep down he is loving and has a strong loyalty to those he cares about. Dimitri is extremely loyal and dutiful, especially when it comes to guarding the Moroi.

Relationships

Rosemarie Hathaway

Rosemarie Hathaway is the love of Dimitri's life, his future wife and soulmate. They first meet when Dimitri comes to take Rose and Lissa back to St. Vladimir's. After they return to the Academy, Dimitri fights for Rose to remain at school to become a Guardian. Kirova agrees, on the condition that Dimitri becomes her mentor. Rose develops a crush on him very quickly. During combat training, she blushes when he pins her down and ends up on top of her. As her training continues and intensifies, they find out many things about each other and begin to fall in love. Dimitri hides his feelings as they both have to protect Lissa someday and cannot be distracted by each other. When Victor places a lust charm on a rose necklace he  gives Rose as a present, under its influence, the two nearly make love in Dimitri's room. Victor uses the charm to distract them as he kidnaps Lissa Dragomir for her spirit magic. When realising the necklace is charmed, Dimitri removes the necklace and he and Rose rescue Lissa. Victor is temporarily locked up at the Academy. Rose asks to speak with Victor one last time. He tells her that in order for the lust charm to have worked, there had to be a certain degree of attraction between Rose and Dimitri. Victor then uses his recently turned Strigoi daughter Natalie to try to murder her, however Dimitri interveans and Natalie is killed out of necessity. While carrying Rose to the clinic, Rose tells Dimitri what Victor had said and asks why Dimitri had lied about his affection towards her. He confesses his feelings and explains why they could never be together: If ever in the future a strigoi came to attack while they both were guarding Lissa, he would be conflicted between duty and love, "If I let myself love you, I won't throw myself in front of her. I'll throw myself in front of you."

Frostbite

As a way of getting Rose out of his head, Dimitri chooses to be closer to his friend Tasha Ozera, but can't stop thinking about Rose. He becomes jealous when Rose starts talking to Adrian Ivashkov, warning her against him. "You're not an adult yet," he tells her after he catches her in Adrian's room. When Rose leaves with Christian to stop Mason, Eddie and Mia from attacking Strigoi in Spokane, Dimitri is extremely worried over Rose, and when he arrives at the scene, he is the only one to get through to her. Dimitri realises that even though he could become Tasha's guardian and husband (the only chance he'd have of having his own children, (two dhampirs are incapable of having children together) he could never love Tasha in the way that she wanted. "Not when my heart is somewhere else."

Shadow Kiss

When Rose's final training comes up, the sexual desire between Dimitri and Rose has started to heighten towards each other. He becomes extremely worried when spirit's effects cause Rose to see ghosts, most notably Mason, who died in Spokane in
Frostbite. After Rose takes on Lissa's darkness, and brutally attacks Jesse Zeklos, Dimitri takes Rose to a cabin in the woods, where he manages to break through Rose's frenzy, and they end up having sex for the first time.Shortly after this, Dimitri is attacked and forcefully turned into a Strigoi, fleeing to Russia to stay away and protect Rose.

Blood Promise

Rose follows Dimitri to Russia to stake him as he'd asked her to do if he ever became a Strigoi in the earlier novel. After he finds out she is searching for him, he kidnaps and drinks from her, trying to persuade her to be awakened as Strigoi. After she manages to escape, he chases her to a nearby bridge, where Rose nearly jumps off rather than be turned. He saves her, but this gives her an opening to kill him. However, thanks to Rose not staking him all the way through the chest, combined with the impact with the river pushing the stake all the way out before it could kill him, he survives. Once she gets back to the US he sends her a letter, along with the stake she used to 'kill' him.

Spirit Bound

Lissa is able to turn Dimitri back to normal in Spirit Bound. Out of guilt, he pushes Rose away to protect her, even to the point that he tells her that his love for her has faded, breaking her heart and leading her to decide to almost have sex with Adrian to move on. Before a situation leads to him fiercely defending her from the guardians sent to arrest her for murder.

Last Sacrifice

Dimitri and friends break Rose out of prison when she is framed for killing Queen Tatiana in Last Sacrifice. Over time, Rose thinks her love for Dimitri was fading, however their love for one another grows stronger as they try to find proof of Rose's innocence.

When Rose is once again overcome with spirit, Dimitri helps her to forgive herself for accidentally killing Victor Dashkov. Dimitri finally proclaims that his love had never wavered, and - even though he does not want Rose to cheat on Adrian - they have sex for the second time, in their hotel room.
Dimitri and Rose travel back to Court, where Tasha is revealed to be the killer. She takes Mia (a friend of Rose's) hostage and when confronted by gardians, aims a gun at Lissa. Rose jumps in front of her and gets shot in the chest. Dimitri believes he has lost her, and is overcome with grief. However in light of this he forgives himself and realizes that Rose really does love him, and has also forgiven him. Rose miraculously recovers. After Lissa is proclaimed Queen, Rose and Dimitri are able to have a relationship since Rose becomes one of Lissa's Guardians, and Dimitri is assigned to Christian Ozera Lissa's boyfriend.
Shortly after Rose's recovery, both of them go to Russia together to see his family again, and throughout the trip, Dimitri drops hints that he wants to marry Rose. Also, Adrian Ivashkov says the two are inseparable when at Court and when on duty, "moved almost as one entity, like a matched pair of wolves or lions, both weary and deadly as they studied their surroundings."  When off duty he said they, "had been too wrapped up in each other, sitting outside on a sunny day. She'd leaned against Dimitri, looking content in a way Adrian had never seen -- certainly not while he'd dated her. She'd said something that made Dimitri laugh, bringing a smile to the other man's hard features, a smile that Adrian hadn't thought was possible."
When at Palm Springs, Dimitri greatly misses Rose, and when she calls him at the restaurant, according to Sydney, his face glows, and a large smile comes across his face.
At the wedding of Sonya Karp and Mikhail Tanner, he is seen with Rose, arm-in-arm and dancing together.
Dimitri loves Rose's hair, and he calls her Roza when thinking or speaking of her with affection or love.
In the epilogue of Ruby Circle, Dimitri proposes to Rose with a cut diamond ring surrounded by blue sapphires... She finally answers "Yes" and sometimes wears it.

Natasha ("Tasha") Ozera

Tasha Ozera was one of Dimitri's closest friend. After she visits the Academy, Dimitri tries to get over Rose by getting closer to Tasha, being already aware of her feelings. When Tasha offers him the option to become her guardian and lover (with the possibility of having a family together in the future), Dimitri refuses, finally accepting the fact his heart belonged to another person: Rose Hathaway. Because of his refusal, Tasha decides to get rid of Rose by killing the queen with Rose's stake; making her the main suspect for the murder. After framing Rose, she tries to get closer to Dimitri again, thinking she had a chance without any other rival in her way. The main problem was that Dimitri still loved and believed in Rose, supporting her during her imprisonment. Heart-broken and desperate after the guardians tried to retain her, Tasha shoots Rose. After her treason to the Moroi society and second murder attempt the relationship between Dimitri and Tasha is unknown.

Christian Ozera

Christian Ozera is Dimitri's charge at the end of Last Sacrifice. They become close friends, due to Dimitri being his Guardian.

Adrian Ivaskov

Adrian and Dimitri are rivals for Rose's love, and Adrian holds a grudge against him after Rose leaves him for Dimitri. They also clash due to having different work ethics. They do eventually become friends to a certain extent, although Adrian teases that he "can't hold his liquor". Dimitri tries to help Adrian after he becomes depressed after the Alchemists abduct Sydney, but is rebuffed. It is shown that he accepts the marriage between Adrian and human Sydney Sage. It is later revealed that Dimitri is the first cousin of Adrian, due to Adrian's uncle, Randall Ivashkov, being Dimitri's father.

Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir

Lissa Dragomir is initially Dimitri's new charge, as he brings her and Rose back from Portland. Over time they become close friends, though she was initially hurt when Rose didn't tell her about her and Dimitri's relationship. Lissa uses a silver stake charmed with spirit to turn Dimitri back into a dhampir when he was a Strigoi, and he becomes eternally grateful towards Lissa, thinking of her as an angel. Dimitri feels as though he would always be in debt to Lissa for turning him back from being Strigoi. Their friendship continues, as Lissa was named Queen, while Dimitri becomes the Guardian of Lissa's boyfriend, Christian Ozera.

DID YOU KNOW?

Dimitri is portrayed by Danila Kozlovsky in the movie adaptation.
Both Dimitri and Rose had a resentment towards one of their parents (Dimitri with his father, Rose with her mother).
Dimitri is the only character to appear in all books (both Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series) thus far.
It is possible that Dimitri and Rose will marry; if they do, they will be the first Guardian couple to marry and continue their duties.
His relationship with Rose began when she developed a huge crush on him. It was obvious that the feeling were mutual when he pinned her down and she blushed. The moment lasted a while since they had a conversation while he was on top her.
According to Richelle Mead, Dimitri will be pushing marriage more than Rose, as Mead said that Dimitri will be the one who wants to settle down of the two of them.
Mead reported recently that Dimitri thinks that the Russian composer, Tchaikovsky is a good composer, but Dimtiri stills loves the 1980's music.
In the film, Dimitri is seen to have been born in 1989.
According to Mead, Dimitri holds a Blood Master Level 7 which is considered the highest level in Guardian standards.
Dimitri enjoys reading novels set in the American 'Old West'.
He also cannot live without a duster coat, which he loves.
Dimitri is the first cousin of Royal Moroi and former rival, Adrian Ivashkov.
Since Dimitri is a restored Strigoi, he and Rose have the option of having their own biological children if she gets the Strigoi vaccine.
At the end of Ruby Circle, Dimitri and Rose are engaged.
During a Twitter chat in 2012, Mead stated that Dimitri is a Sagittarius.[1] The birth dates for Sagittarius are November 23 - December 21.
If you take the fandom's accepted birthday of March 21st 1992 for Rose, this would put Dimitri being born in late 1984 (making him 7 1/2 years older than her) or late 1985 (6 1/2 years older). Late 1984 is more likely since the series starts with them at 17/24; as a Sagittarius, he would've had his 25th birthday at some point between VA and Frostbite.

Rosemarie Hathaway

Rosemarie Hathaway is the narrator and heroine of the Vampire Academy series. She is a Dhampir Guardian and the only daughter and child of the infamous Moroi, Ibrahim 'Abe' Mazur and the well-known guardian Janine Hathaway.
From a young age, she was raised at St. Vladimir's Academy after being sent there by her mother for Dhampir training and schooling. Since the age of five, she has been the best friend of Queen Vasilisa Dragomir. At the age of fifteen, she died in the same accident that killed nearly the entire Dragomir family, only to be saved by Lissa using the element Spirit, making her shadow-kissed. In the same year, she and Lissa ran from St. Vladimir's to save the latter form an unknown threat, only to be brought back by a group of guardians lead by Dimitri Belikov two years later.
Upon her return to St. Vladimir's, Dimitri was assigned to privately teach Rose in order to catch up with her classmates' training level. Over the course of a few weeks, she becomes completely infatuated with Dimitri, hoping he would reciprocate those feelings. Eventually, her wish comes true and they fall in love despite it being forbidden, with Dimitri being Rose's teacher and the fact both would one day be Lissa's guardians. At the age of seventeen, she killed two Strigoi, Isaiah and Elena, but lost ex-boyfriend, Mason Ashford, in the process. At eighteen, she was arrested after being framed for killing Queen Tatiana Ivashkov. She later found the real killer, Natasha Ozera, after finding Lissa's lost (half) sibling, Jillian Mastrano. At the end of Last Sacrifice, Dimitri finally becomes her boyfriend. She is famous for her accomplishments as a novice and as the guardian of Queen Vasilisa Dragomir.

History

Early LifeRosemarie Hathaway (born 21 March 1997) is the only daughter and child of the infamous Turkish, non-Royal Moroi, Abe Mazur and famed guardian, Janine Hathaway. From a young age, she was raised at St. Vladimir's Academy after being sent there by her mother for Dhampir training and schooling. Since the age of five, she has been the best friend of Vasilisa Dragomir. At the age of fifteen, the Dragomir family brought Rose along for their winter break. Eric Dragomir was driving with his wife, Rhea, next to him while Lissa, Rose, and Lissa's brother, Andre, were in the back. As Eric was turning up the radio, at Rose and Lissa's request, a drunk driver on the wrong side of the road smashed into them, killing everyone but Lissa. She used her element Spirit to bring Rose back from the dead, making her the first known shadow-kissed dhampir since Anna. Upon their return to St. Vladimir's, Rose became more reckless than normal, a side-effect of being shadow-kissed. She began to party and sneak out of her dorms on several occasions, even attempting, and failing, to climb out of her dorm window, which resulted her badly injured. Rose was caught by Sonya Karp, who healed her after making a mutual agreement to keep each other's secrets; she saw the scars on Sonya's head caused by her scratching her forehead due to the darkness spirit.
Another time, when Rose and Lissa were sneaking out to meet Abby Badica, who exchanged a bottle of peach schnapps for rhinestone-studded sandals with Rose, Sonya caught the duo again. While the three were walking back to the school, Lissa brought a raven back to life with Rose and Sonya witnessing the event - the latter realizing Lissa could use Spirit. Natalie Dashkov had also saw this from afar and told her father, Victor Dashkov, who later used this to torment Lissa. Sonya then compelled Rose to take Lissa and leave the academy, telling her they would taker away too, meaning Lissa would be taken by guardians from the academy into psychiatric rehabilitation. A few weeks later after witnessing Lissa go into a spirit-induced rage, Rose and her escaped the academy via a car trunk.
Two years later, Guardian Dimitri Belikov finds them in Portland, Oregon and brings brings them back to the academy. He later helps Rose graduate by giving her extra training sessions, during which Rose develops a huge crush on her mentor - both eventually fall in love with each other, despite the forbidden nature.

Vampire Academy

Appearance

Described as looking like a semi-exotic desert princess, Rose is gorgeous and constantly admired for her large sex appeal. She has a slim physique, with feminine curves, large round breasts, small waist, rounded hips, and a light layer of lean muscle covering her body. At 5'7", Rose is the shortest of her friends, most who are male (given most Dhampir guardians and novices are male).
She also has beautiful thick, dark, long brown hair that shines black in the right light, dark brown eyes with golden flecks, and lightly tanned skin which she describes as being "the color of the inside of an almond".

Personality

At the beginning of the series, Rose is a reckless and impulsive person; she enjoys partying, drinking, and boys, often getting herself (and others) into trouble for fun. In the first book, she considers herself a novelty, as she is always pulling off crazy stunts and making wisecracks for entertainment. Although somewhat flirty with other males, and willing to make out with those who caught her eye, she is not necessarily promiscuous, considering she remains a virgin for much longer than most of her peers (she eventually loses her virginity to Dimitri on the cusp of her eighteenth birthday). When she hooks up with Jesse in the first book, she firmly states that she is not having sex with him. Rose also holds very little respect for authority figures, often mouthing off to teachers and earning herself detention. Rose can also be somewhat violent towards those who antagonized her. She has a reputation on campus for being someone who you did not want to pick a fight with, especially after she broke a girl's arm in the ninth grade. Basically, Rose was not all talk: not only can she shoot out hilarious and seething comebacks, but she packs a mean punch. Otherwise known as a fighting beast. At Dimitri and Rose's first meeting in Oregon, he saw her strength and responsible loyal sense of duty (towards Lissa). Dimitri saw fierceness and a devoted beauty. Even in the earliness of Rose's career and life when she was reckless, childish, and a novice, there was a great guardian and fighter.
"There was a passion and intensity that radiated off of her, almost like a palpable thing"
However, as time passes, especially after Mason's death, Rose begins to become much more grounded and responsible. She thinks through her actions much more, in contrast to her old reckless self, shedding some of that old impulsiveness. This is greatly highlighted when she chastised Mason for trying to seek out Strigoi, something she herself would most likely had done in the past. She also becomes much more practical. She finds most information useless unless it teaches her how to become a better guardian, showing an attitude similar to other guardians. Despite this, she still uses what Dimitri calls "Rose-logic". Rose-logic mostly just entails trying to find loopholes in everything in order to rationalize doing something unreasonable, or when Rose tries to justify something that makes little sense. Even back when Rose was irrational and reckless, she had a very strong sense of duty to the Moroi. As stated by Dimitri, she understands her duties better than most guardians twice her age and experience, hence even at the start of the series, looking beyond her smart ass behavior, she is still quite mature in that regard.
Like Dimitri, Rose has very powerful protective instincts. She cannot stand to sit back and see people get hurt, always trying to do something to help whenever possible, even if for a complete and total stranger. She is extraordinarily devoted to helping innocent people and protecting the Moroi. Most often, this protectiveness is directed towards Lissa, although she has shown to be protective over others, including Dimitri, Christian, Adrian, Jill, and Viktoria.
Rose can be very sarcastic and sharp-tongued at times. She always has a smart ass comment ready whenever someone says something antagonistic to her, and always bites back with a witty insult. She doesn't hesitate to speak her mind, and can be extremely stubborn in her opinions. When challenged by Abe Mazur, she shows an almost childish insolence by intentionally staying in Baia after he tells her to leave. She can still be rebellious towards authority figures, as shown in her attitude towards Abe, as well as Queen Tatiana.
Although Rose is not necessarily conceited, she is very aware of the fact that she is beautiful. She is rather proud of her body, especially since most of the girls she is around are Moroi who are slim and underdeveloped. She also takes pride in her hair, mainly because Dimitri loves it. Also, although she has become much more practical, she can still be somewhat vain at times about her appearance, taking pride in how she looks.
Despite many changes in her personality, Rose remains a social creature. She can be friendly and warm, not shying away from meeting new people, and has considerable skill in social interactions. Very much like Lissa, Rose has a certain charisma that attracts people and make them flock to her, but there is still a significant difference in this charm: Lissa's allure stems from her royal refinement and intelligence while Rose's charm originates from her witty sense of humor, her sharp brilliance, and her formidable talent in Moroi protection.
Rose is also shown to be adept at using her feminine wiles. She has shown an ability to seduce men and sweet talk them into giving her what she wants. Examples include Mason and Adrian. Rose has also showed an ability to read people. She is excellent at reading body language, noticing things that others wouldn't.
Rose can be somewhat prejudiced in some matters, mostly involving the politics of Moroi society and the role that Dhampirs play. Growing up, she was taught several basic principles that have become ingrained into her mind. The most prominent is the motto of the guardians, "They come first," meaning the Moroi. However, she has also been taught that certain acts are taboo, and such thoughts remain to this day. For example, she used to hold great disdain for blood whores, or Dhampirs who chose not to become guardians. She considered it to be one of the worst things one could call a Dhampir, and found the very concept of blood whores to be disgusting and disgraceful. After spending time in Baia with the Belikovs, her opinion of them lightened, but she still could not bring herself to step foot inside a blood whore den. She is even more disgusted by the idea of male blood whores, a concept she initially found inconceivable, and still finds unsettling. Rose also believes that some things about Moroi society are constants, such as that the Dhampir don't have to worry about Strigoi during the daytime, that humans have no knowledge of their existence, and that Strigoi cannot penetrate the safety of wards. This is one reason she found the Badica massacre to be so disturbing because it challenged some of her most core beliefs.

Abilities

Rose is considered to be a powerful and talented Guardian. As she has been seen to have been recommended by both Moroi and even Alchemists to be a talented Guardian. Furthermore, she has a Dhampir's abilities: regenerative healing factor, enhanced senses, endurance, strength and speed.
Martial Arts: Rose is a fully trained Guardian, having the ability to take down her opponent using martial arts without any form of weapon. Under the guidance and training of Dimitri Belikov, Rose was able to increase her ability eventually to where she was able to take down Strigoi and dhampir Guardians without fault. Even after two years away from the Academy, Rose was able to take down her opponents in class within a month of returning.
Weapon Adept: Being a fully trained and educated Guardian, Rose is able to use any form of weaponry against her opponents. She is able to control and kill her opponents with the Silver Stake (silver stakes kill strigoi) at the age of eighteen without even graduating her schooling. At the age of seventeen she was able to command a blunt sword to decapitate two Strigoi, one being extremely old Strigoi, when captured in Spokane. According to Sydney Sage, Rose is deadly when holding a weapon due to her amazing ability to kill her opponents during her confrontations.
Shadow-kissed Capability: After being brought back from the dead by her best friend Vasilisa Dragomir, Rose began to develop strange abilities. Rose is able to feel what Lissa is feeling, and in a way, read her mind. Rose is also able to slip into Lissa's head, thus "becoming one with her." This is often referenced to as their bond. Some of Rose's other shadow kissed powers involve being able to tell when Strigoi are near and being able to interact with ghosts who help her kill the Strigoi as well. Rose also has one of the highest tolerances to compulsion ever found in Dhampirs, thanks to the effect of Lissa's extreme compulsion abilities.

Relationships

Family

Janine Hathaway

Rose originally had a grudge towards her mother for leaving her at the academy at a young age and never visiting her. When Janine comes to the school during Rose's senior year, their relationship starts to rebuild, particularly after the Spokane incident with Mason's death. After Rose was shot, Janine was worried for her life (despite the fact that Rose was recovering). Abe noted Janine for coddling her telling her not to perform in guardian full duties.

Abe Mazur

Rose never had any contact with her father until she was eighteen. But in Shadow Kiss, (chapter 15) while Rose is being reprimanded by Queen Tatiana, Tatiana accidentally let slip the first name of Rose's father, Ibrahim. The only information that Rose knew about him was that that he was Turkish, and she resembled him very much. Rose first met her father in Russia. She had no idea who he was, but he told her he was working for someone back in America. He pleaded with her to return there, but she refused. After seeing Abe for the last time in Russia, he gave her one of his scarves, just in case she felt cold on the ride back from Russia:
"It was one of his nicer ones, too: cashmere, woven with an array of brilliant colors, more suited to the Caribbean than here or Montana."
-- Rose Hathaway, Blood Promise, Chapter Twenty-Nine, page 465.
Rose returned to the Academy, and Rose's mother, Janine, told her the man she met was her father; after Janine identified the scarf as a family heirloom. At the end of Spirit Bound, Abe was Rose's lawyer during her hearing for the death of Queen Tatiana Ivashkov, which Rose was framed for. Rose is sentenced to a trial, while Abe promises she will never ever go to trial and that she won't be executed. In the beginning of Last Sacrifice Abe, Lissa, Christian, Mikhail Tanner, and a few others helped Rose escape the Royal Court jails. After Rose was shot, nearing the end of Last Sacrifice, Abe was said to be spoiling her with gifts and love. In Bloodlines, in Palm Springs, when Lee said that he was staying with his father more, Abe turned to Rose and said "Now that's devotion"showing that Abe wants Rose to be around him more. Rose affectionately calls her father "old man"and on some occasions "dad".

Romantic

Dimitri Belikov

Rose and Dimitri first meet when she was seventeen and he comes to bring her and Lissa back to the Academy from Portland. Dimitri becomes Rose's mentor. Rose develops an immense crush on Dimitri, but later learns her feelings are more than that. While under Victor's Love Spell, they confess their growing feelings for one and other and nearly have sex in Dimitri's room, but break away from the spell when Dimitri throws away the enchanted necklace. They know that they can never be together because they are destined to be Lissa's Guardians. As Dimitri says, if he let himself love Rose, he would throw himself in front her, not Lissa. Rose is saddened by this, but respects his feelings. During the book, Shadow Kiss, Dimitri becomes Strigoi after Rose fights to go and get Eddie Castile, but when Rose gets the news from Mason that Dimitri was turned Strigoi, she leaves to go kill him.
Rose later becomes jealous of Tasha Ozera, who is in love with Dimitri, when she asks him to be her Guardian. This upsets Rose, but despite her jealousy, she tells Dimitri to take the offer to be Tasha's guardian (and the father of her children), a very selfless and noble thing for Rose to do. However, Dimitri refuses to take the offer because his heart lie with Rose, causing them to secretly hide their relationship from the eyes of the Guardians and Moroi until Rose was eighteen. Soon their sexual desires for each other could no longer be contained. After Rose is overcome with Spirit Darkness and nearly kills Jesse Zeklos, Rose and Dimitri have sex in a cabin, her first time with Rose losing her virginity to him. Their happiness, however, is short lived, as Dimitri is taken by Strigoi when the Academy is under attack. After the attack, mialabym everything appears to be okay, but then they find out that the Strigoi took some people, prisoners. After rescuing the prisoners, Dimitri is held captive and is turned into a Strigoi against his will. At this, Rose drops out of school to keep a promise that they made to each other: "If one of them ever turned Strigoi, to kill the other". Rose finds Dimitri in Russia, where Dimitri holds Rose captive and wants her to choose to become Strigoi, unlike him. Dimitri tries to enforce this by sucking her blood and making out a lot for pleasure , therefore making Rose high with endorphins but even then Rose refuses. Later, Rose escapes and stabs Dimitri in the heart with a silver stake but didn't push far enough into his chest to kill him. Rose then finds a way to save Dimitri with Spirit embedded into a stake, but only if a spirit user stabs him. Later, Dimitri is turned back by Lissa, just before it appears that Rose is actually going to kill Dimitri after many tries. After Dimitri turns back to normal, Dimitri tells Rose that he doesn't love her anymore because he feels that he doesn't deserve her after sucking Rose's blood whilst Dimitri was Strigoi. He also states that he has no room for anything in his heart other than guilt. Rose is heartbroken and devastated, and this nearly causes her to have sex with Adrian Ivashkov, but changes her mind due to none of them have any protection. So she offers, her neck to him . To drink her , blood instead of sex.
Dimitri and others break Rose out of prison after she is framed for killing Queen Tatiana in Last Sacrifice, and run away. Over time, their love for one another grows stronger.
When Rose is once again overcome with spirit, Dimitri successfully makes her forgive herself for accidentally killing Victor Dashkov, who Rose breaks out of prison to restore Dimitri from being Strigoi. Dimitri proclaims he loves her, and they have sex again in their hotel room. Dimitri and Rose travel back to Court, where Tasha is revealed as the killer and shoots Rose in the chest. Dimitri is overcome with grief believing to have lost her, though she recovered.
After Rose recovers, they're are able to have a real relationship after Dimitri is assigned to become Christian's Guardian instead of Lissa's, who is Rose's charge.
In Homecoming, it was revealed that Rose and Dimitri went to Russia together, where it was continuously hinted by Yeva that they going to get married, despite Rose not believing in her vision. Dimitri also hints to Rose that he wants to get married, but she repeatedly tells him she wants to have a number "2" in front of her age before she ever marries.

In Bloodlines Rose says that they are still together, but she is unhappy that they can't settle properly because they worry too much about Lissa and Jill.
In The Indigo Spell, during Sonya's and Mikhail's wedding reception, Rose and Dimitri stand arm in arm, and are later seen dancing with each other during the reception.
At the end of The Ruby Circle, it is revealed that Rose and Dimitri are engaged, although Rose says the engagement will last for a little while before they get married. She even says that she made it clear she has no intentions of getting married until there is a two at the beginning of her age.

Adrian Ivashkov

Rose first meets Adrian at the Ski Resort at Christmas, where Adrian flirts with her on several occasions, even going as far as sending her gifts to gain her affections. After Dimitri is turned, Rose gives Adrian a chance when she returns from Russia, and asks him to write her a letter asking her to date him which he does. They began dating, despite many disliking the relationship, and Rose becomes jealous when Adrian flirts with Avery Lazar. After Rose and Dimitri re-proclaim their love, Rose breaks up with Adrian due to that she cheated on him with Dimitri in a hotel room which is hard on him, as he was already deeply in love with her.
In Bloodlines, according to Jill, every time Adrian closes his eyes all he sees is Rose. However, this changes due to him falling in love with Sydney Sage. In The Golden Lily, Adrian states that even though he still feels hurt and kind of used by her, his love for Rose has faded and he hasn't thought much about her in a while. By The Fiery Heart, his romantic feelings have disappeared completely, and been replaced by respect and friendship. In Silver Shadows, Rose helps convince Lissa to help Adrian find Sydney, and when she finds out about Adrian and Sydney, Rose's eyes are full of acceptance and support for their relationship.

Mason Ashford

Rose has a brief relationship with her close friend, Mason Ashford, who had had a crush on her for years. However, she only does so in order to try and get over Dimitri. Despite the relationship, she continues to see Mason as a brother and nothing more. After Mason is attacked in Spokane, Rose covers his body in an attempt to protect him from harm. Rose is emotionally scarred by Mason's death. A few months later, (as a result of being Shadow-Kissed) she sees Mason's spirit. He appears to be trying to give her messages, which becomes helpful in locating the place which the Strigoi had been hiding. After the Strigoi attack on the Academy, Rose says goodbye to Mason as he moves on. Even though Rose says they were never really a couple, they shared a close intimate relationship which resembled a relationship.

Friends

Lissa Dragomir

Rose became best friends with royal Moroi, Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir when she was five when their teacher made them both write their long names, causing Rose to throw a textbook at the teacher. They continued to be close friends, eventually becoming like sisters. Lissa brings Rose back from the dead when she dies in the same car accident that kills the rest of the Dragomir family. Rose takes care of Lissa after they run away from the Academy for two years, including giving her blood. When they return to the Academy. Rose defends Lissa's honor and protects her with her life. After graduation, Lissa becomes Queen and Rose becomes Lissa's Guardian; even though she lost her title after they believed she killed Queen Tatiana. After Tasha is found to be the real killer, Rose takes a bullet for Lissa, nearly dying. Through everything that the two have been through, they maintain a close sister-like relationship, even as Guardian and Charge.

Christian Ozera

While Rose is assigned to guard Christian for school, they quickly learn many things about each other that they never have revealed to others, including either Dimitri or Lissa. They became very much like brother and sister, and despite their bickering, they care for each other included Both protective of Lissa

Eddie Castile

Rose is close friends to fellow dhampir, Eddie Castile, they met when they were young children, and become very much like brother and sister. After Mason's death, they comforted each other. They quickly rebuild their friendship, as Eddie believes Rose is innocent when the Queen was murdered, and even helps her escape with Dimitri. Rose comes with Eddie to Palm Springs to help him move Jill there, and they're still shown to be close.
