It all started with that one dream.
Nellie was fourteen years old at the time. She lived with her family in a small house in the woods. They never set food in town, except when absolutely nessecary for clothing and extra food. Even they couldn't get everything all by themselves.
Nellie was the odd one out. Her family consisted of her uncle and aunt, and their two daughters. One was older than her, one was younger. And they were cruel to her. Nellie hated it there.
Her mother had passed away and she didn't remember anything about her. There was a room with her stuff, but Nellie was never allowed inside and if she tried, she wouldn't succeed. She longed nothing more than to dig into the chest of her mother's stuff.

That night, Nellie had gone to bed rather early, in the middle of the day. It was fall, the leaves were red and falling, covering the forest grounds. Nellie's dream was intense. She was never allowed outside, but there she was, in the middle of the woods. Not furhter than the edge. She didn't know how she knew this, but she just did.
She saw the trees, red and orange, beautiful leaves on the trees and that made up the floor of the forest. Her view was off... She seemed way smaller than she actually was, and she could hear herself panting. But it wasn't human like...
And then, her view moved up and down, up and down, up and down... She was running. Running through the woods, her view bouncing and the sides of her view became blurred. This didn't feel human like at all, but man it felt good. It felt fantastic!
She went faster and faster, feeling the running as if she was about to set off and fly, and-
And then she fell. Waking up with a shock, she had fallen straight out of her bed. She was laying on the floor, next to her bed covered with white sheets.
Nellie felt very disoriented. She felt heavy, and moving was difficult. She remembered the dream very clearly, it was so sharp in her memory, her mind. She longed back to that dream, to get back to that forest, and to just run.
Finally, her muscles gained back some feeling and she put a hand on her forehead. Was she warm? Kind of... She wasn't cold at least. Maybe she had a fever, Nellie thought. But that dream... it didn't feel at all like a fever dream. Fever dreams were hazy, this one was so sharp... She sighed, pushing herself up on her elbows and kicking the sheets off of her legs. Of course she was tangled in one of the sheets.
Slowly and with trouble, she got up, and almost fell down again when she was on her feet. She caught herself and moved out to the living room.

What she didn't know, is that at the same day she had that dream.. Her family had picked up a stanger. And when said picked up, it meant they had literally kidnapped a stranger.
Nellie came into the living room, and saw the boy immediatly. He was nineteen or so, a few years older than she was. He was wearing all red, with golden accents, and had black hair and a tanned skin. He seemed tall, the way he was sitting on the kitchen table, and he seemed very uneasy, his brown eyes flashing around the room. No one acknowledged him, yet, he remained still, probably under threat of whatever his family had said to him or done to him.
Nellie was shocked, and the emotions waved through her, freezing her in place.
''Nellie,'' her uncle said. ''Meet our new guest-uh, what was it?''
It took a while for the guy to respond, but everyone was looking at him and he blinked quickly. Did he look at Nellie slightly longer than the rest? He almost seemed surprised to see her... ''Jay,'' he said quickly.
''Jay!'' her uncle said, patting him on the shoulder roughly. ''Meet our new guest, Jay!''
It was quiet for a while, as Nellie's brain fogged and her breath went up slightly. ''...Guest....?'' she eventually managed to get out, but she knew immediatly that was a mistake, and turned around again to go to her room. She didn't listen to whatever her family shouted at her from the other room.
This is why she hated this family. A strange feeling took ahold of her. A feeling that shouted deep inside from her; get out! Leave! Escape!
But how?
This was the day that that feeling had settled; she wanted to leave. Run away.

The next few days, she had taken it upon herself to take care of him, as her family didn't seem to enjoy his company, even though they were the ones bringing him here in the first place.
She was shocked to see he was gone when she got in the kitchen, however.
''Where is he?!'' She asked, scared of what her family could have done to him. Her uncle glanced back at her, not really taking notice. ''Gone.'' He replied.
Nellie could feel and hear her heart and breath going up, when her uncle started laughing. ''Ha! I'm just kidding, he's upstairs.''
Nellie swallowed with a lot of trouble. Upstairs... Upstairs where?
Shakingly, she went upstairs, her hand sliding across the rough railing as she stepped up the stairs. She took a deep breath before knocking on the door closest to the door;
Her oldest cousin's door.
The door swung open, and a girl dressed in all black leather, heavy makeup and black, messy short hair stood inside the opening, chewing gum.
''What,'' she said, annoyed.
Nellie didn't have an answer, and the girl sighed annoyingly, swinging the door further open. Nellie startled as she saw the guy behind her, all the way back on the wall. Chained. Chained by hand and feet, and just because, there was a chain around his middle as well. He looked weak.
''Yeah, he's in here,'' her cousin said, ''come on in,'' she concluded with a sarcastic voice.

And that's what she did. Nellie felt pity for the guy. He hung from the wall, chained. His black hair was no longer tied in a pony tail, at least barely. Strands of hair had gotten loose and were hanging in his face. It looked filthy. He looked filthy. What happened in the few hours she was gone to collect her thoughts and rest? She knew what didn't happen tho... She didn't get the dream back.
He looked like he'd been here for days, weeks maybe, and the neat appearance he had when he got here was gone. His head hung down and moved weakly upon her entering to try and look at her. His legs were folded under him messingly and his hands hung above him. He didn't have the strenght to keep his head up, that's how weak he was...
Nellie breathed in sharply, and could feel the tears building up in her eyes. What did they do? What happened to him? Did he... did he even get food? Water?
She couldn't handle this, and she turned around without a word. And she could swear she heard him speak after her when she left.
''No...'' His voice was weak, shrill as if he was parched... ''Wait....''
But it was too late. Nellie was gone, out of the doorway, and even if she heard him, she wasn't coming back. He sighed in despair, letting his head hang down again.
Nellie did hear him.. And she did stop, slightly, a weird feeling taking ahold of her, lighting up her breath... But then she pushed through the heavy air and the feeling, and walked away with tears in her eyes.

She wasn't doing what the guy thought she was doing, though. She didn't walk off.
She just couldn't handle this, but she didn't flee from it. She came back. She hadn't been in her room like the last time, not again. She was in the kitchen. And she came back with a big glass of water and mixed food plate.
Nellie had her own head bowed too, as she stood in the doorway awkwardly. She didn't dare look up, but there was this urge that pulled her eyes towards the guy. She pushed them down, over and over again, but something pulled her towards him. And she didn't know what.
Jay, at the moment, had his eyes closed. He had to rest. Spirits know how much longer he'd stay here... and without food and water, he was already greatly weakened. Especially with this girl, that brought him upstairs and chained him. She was... intense. And despite not doing anything, he was already out of breath. He felt like he did something very exhausting and just couldn't catch his breath, forever stuck in that one scary moment where you thought 'I can't breathe, I have to calm down, now'.

Nellie stood in shock in the door opening. This seemed really bed... His skin was paler and clam, too. He looked sick...
She hurridly and swiftly rushed towards his side, kneeling down and putting down the plate.
''Hey...'' She said, in a soft voice as she brushed a strand of hair behind his ear.
Besides them, Nellie's cousin had been busy at the desk, but now rolled her eyes, exclaiming ''Oh, goody,'' and put down the item she was busy with on the desk. ''He's all yours,'' she sneered, looking Nellie up and down. Her cousin then walked out of the room, swinging the door behind her. It didn't shut all the way.
Nellie looked after her, doubtfully, but then turned back to the guy concerned. Jay was even weaker than before... He still barely had the strenght to lift his head and it wobbled, as to so speak when he tried to look up to her.
''Shh, no no, it's okay,'' she hurridly said, supporting his face in her hands. This resulted in them meeting eyes. Nellie felt the pain in his eyes piercing deep into her. Nellie looked away, guilt flooding over her. Her family did this.
Something strange happened in that moment... Nellie had never felt such things. But she felt determination. Determination to make this right. Her family did this. That was right. But at least she could do something against it.
Nellie knew it could really get her into trouble, but she didn't care at this point anymore.

And so she gently let go of his face, backing off. Jay tried saying something, but all that got out of his mouth was inaudiauble and it was only groaning muttering. ''Shh,'' she said, ''it's okay, I'll be back,'' she reassured him.
But as she rushed to the door, she stopped in the doorway, turning over her shoulder. He was still muttering and moving his head around.
Nellie felt bad, and stopped in her tracks. Maybe, maybe she could just... Yeah. She went back, and caught him in surprise when she grabbed his face again, still gently. He looked up with his eyes, surprised. He didn't even see her coming back.
He couldn't hear any of what she was saying. Or comprehend it at least. She said something to him, that was meant to be comforting, and grabbed the glass from his side.
Nellie didn't really know what she was doing, exactly, and her hand with the glass in it hovered in the air as she doubted, hesitating.
But she shook her head, and brought a trembling water glass to the guy's face. She put it on his lips, and she wanted to pour something in his mouth, but to her surprise his throat started moving. She'd have thought he was too weak to drink, but he proved her wrong. He must've been so thirsty, she thought, another whim of guilt flooding through her, stinging her eyes.
Jay drank very slowly and weakly, and Nellie had to practice a lot of patience, but at least he drank, and she could breathe in relief when he finally finished the glass. Okay. So at least he was starting to get hydrated again. She'd have to do this regularly, she guessed. She glared at the food on the plate.
Was he even strong enough to eat?

Nellie sighed at that realization, slipping the plate off of her hands onto the floor. Just in case he wanted to eat, he could-
Ah, no. He couldn't. The chains.
She sighed, then turning towards her cousin. She was on her desk, making homework, it looked like? Which was strange, given that she hated school and loved to act out. Nellie shook her head.
Standing at the desk, her cousin made a face towards her. ''What?''
She looked away, averting her cousin's glare. ''Can't we do anything about these chains?''
''What, and let him escape?'' She asked, fidgeting with something in her hands, which Nellie now realized was a weapon that she was taking care of. Of course. She and her dad loved hunting. She sighed.
''Well, what if he doesn't escape?''
Her cousin laughed, throwing her head in her neck. ''Ha! Are you kidding me, he's kidnapped and in chains. The first thing you do when you get out of restraints? Duh, escape! I mean,'' she then mumbled, ''the second thing you do is come back for revenge, of course, but I mean-''
''No, come on, look at him,'' she said, gesturing towards Jay. ''He can't even drink properly, he can't eat, look, if it's nessecary, leave on the ankle chain, but at least take off one of the ankles and his hands out. He can't even eat on his own! He can't get out of a chain if he-''
''Well, hello? Lockpicking. It requires hands.''
Nellie sighed, and looked at Jay again, who was now looking at her too. It got her a little shy, but she still tried to smile, shakingly, giving him an apologetic glance.
To her surprise, he tried to smile back. He tried to, but he failed, his face barely anything that was a smile... She felt bad for him, and looked away.
''Look-'' she started again.
Frustrated, her cousin threw her weapon on the desk. ''No, you look. If you really want this, go talk to my dad, not to me. This guy may be my new unwilling roommate, but it was the only room compatible. I can't see you keeping him in your room, can I? You're the trouble maker anyways, I'm not about to do something wrong just to get into your graces. I'm already in my family's graces, I'm not about to ruin that for you. You're not in the family's graces. So figure it out.''
And with that, her cousin left the room, leaving her and Nellie alone.

Nellie teared up, staying there and not daring to look in Jay's direction. Ashamed of her next action, she left. She just left. Nellie left him there all alone.
But not before he could get a glance into her eyes, her unwilling eyes, but still. His whole glance, his eyes, tried to tell her 'it's okay'.
He never knew if she saw or not, but he hoped and thought so.

This is how it went the next few days. She was the one that brought Jay food, water, and all. And after a few set days, she even got her uncle so far that she could undo his hand chain or chains when she was with him. But if he'd escape, he was very clear that the blame would be on her.

Jay was doing as well as anyone could in these circumstances. He ate and drank and he slept. He started looking a little better too. Whatever they did to him must have been wearing off. He still didn't speak much, but then again, Nellie wagered he was still weakened. She didn't mind much, and often she sat down and read a book in her cousins room (to her dismay) so he could get a little more comfort with the whole chain thing.

Their whole communication right now was body language. A smile here, a glance there. Nellie was too shy to speak, and Jay was far too weakened to try.

One day, Nellie walked into the room only to drop the plate of potatoes and steak, the glass of water and her book. Jay was hanging from the ceiling beam, covered from top to toes in chains. Her youngest cousin, who must have been five or six, maybe four even, was swining him around, laughing.
''What are you...'' Nellie stumbled.
''Look!'' She replied, ''He's a caterpillar!''

....What?
Nellie didn't want to think about that. Somehow, this girl always had twisted games anyways, and her priority right now was to get Jay down.

''You can't do that!'' She just said.
''Yes, I can. It's my house, you're just here... I don't even know why you're here. Why are you here anyways?''
Nellie didn't have a response to that, but Jay's eyes were panicked. Without trying to reason with the little kid anymore, she just started tugging the chains.
''Heeeeey,'' she whined, ''what  are you doiiiinggg.''
She didn't reply, and when it didn't work, Nellie started climbing up to the attic stairs. That's where her cousin was too, and that scared her, even though Nellie was like ten years older.
There, the chains went easier, and so Nellie found herself carefully untying them and letting Jay down slowly. Until her cousin started screeching and hitting her. It was all good until she started scratching too, and Nellie felt the chain slipping away from her. Then she heard a THUD and she realised Jay had just dropped a good distance... Nellie could hear a grunt, then nothing anymore.
''Okay, okay okay, stop!''
But the cousin didn't stop until Nellie's older cousin came walking into her room. And she looked angry.

''What do you think you're doing, ruining a little girl's fun?''
Before Nellie could answer, she heard a strange noise behind her. She noticed that the chains were wrapped up in such a way that Jay seemed to have trouble breathing, and he had trashed around once to make someone notice that. Before her cousin could stop her, Nellie rushed towards him, trying to tug on the chains.
Soon, she felt a tug on her own arm, and she realised her older cousin had come up to stop her. ''I SAID what do you think you're DOING?!''
''Saving him from dying, he can't breathe!!''
And indeed, Jay was struggling to breathe. Nellie knew even her cousin must notice that... the question to her was, was she just going to let him die, or not? It was clear to her that her family only took this guy to have fun. Let him die, and that fun would be over... so would she choose Jay's life and end the fun but get her sister a little enjoyment from this, or would she let the fun continue?

It was the latter one. ''Drop it,'' the cousin said to the little girl up the stairs.
She pouted. ''But-''
''I said drop it.'' Her voice left no room for any sort of argument, and after some pouting the child dropped the chains. Nellie's older cousin was quick to leap into action and with more strength than Nellie could ever posess, she ripped the chains away from Jay's face, who gasped for breath like a fish being returned to the water.
''There; happy now?''

Nellie didn't answer. Her cousin didn't seem to be minding that, either. She went to her desk, and started going through several of her weapons. She had a lot. Guns, knives...
''Dad and I are going hunting.'' She just said. Nellie still didn't answer and her cousin sighed. ''Whatever. Just be in the kitchen soon, and get out of my room.''
''He needs care,'' Nellie said.
''Oh, so now you answer me?'' Her cousin snapped back, annoyed. She tossed one of her weapons on the desk.
''Yes,'' she said, reaching out a hand to Jay's head. As soon as she touched it, he screamed. ''See? He probably has a concussion. He needs serious care, it could get worse.''
Her cousin scoffed. ''You read too many books.''
''Concussions are real-''
''You think I'm dumb?! I know concussions are real, I'm not an idiot, unlike SOME people in this house.''
''I wasn't saying that. But they're really serious. It could get worse. He needs to be woken up every now and then to check if it is getting any worse.''
''Yeah? What do you reccommend? I'm not waking up in the middle of the night for that guy.''
Nellie clenched her fists. ''Look. He's got a serious head injury. He NEEDS care. It could get worse, and then he could DIE. Did you save him just now just to let him die of a head injury?''
''No, I saved him to stop your whining, but apparantely it didn't work,'' her cousin said, rolling her eyes.
Nellie didn't say anything for a while. But she just repeated it; ''He needs care.''
''Fine, whatever, he needs care. Just go to the kitchen. Sheesh,'' Nellie's cousin said, having apparantely picked her items for the hunting trip and cleaned them now. She had one gun and one knife and walked past Nellie.
Her cousin got dangerously close to her with the knife, leaning in to whisper to her face. ''You want that he gets care? You care for him. See if you can convince dad.''
Nellie shuddered, feeling some metal against her body and the hot breath of her cousin. Then, cold again as her cousin moved away and out of the room. ''Don't forget. Kitchen.''

How could Nellie forget that?
