The Trials

Wind blew across the Prairie as Snow the Falls in Winter and his pack left their old home. It was no place for them to live. The mountains provided little shelter, not enough herbs, and it was so rough on pups as well. The small pack moved quietly and quickly towards their new home, the Riparian forest. Snow's eyes gleamed with hunger and determination as they finally crossed from the Prairie into Riparian Forest. It was already much warmer, and the woods seemed to be teaming with life! Was this going to be his forever home?

Skipping Stone was patrolling the edge of her territory. Her apprentice and efficient scout Harbor at her tail. The two she-wolves we're close to to the open plans of the prairie. Skipping Stone was mainly scouting this area for a prospect of territory expansion into the flatter plains. Skipping wasn't didn't usually go on territory excursions. That was her scouts job, along with any other pack members the scouts though should come along. There wasn't a sound to be heard as Skipping Stone stopped and surveyed the edge of the forest. Looking out into the wide and expansive prairie plan. Harbor didn't utter a word, simply shadowing Skipping Stone's movements.

After a moment of contemplation Skipping Stone decided she'd talk to her strategist,Storm, about her expansion plans. The two had grown close over the past sunrises. Just as Skipping Stone was about to turn and retreat home a scent caught her nose. Then she head the distant padding of pawsteps. In a moment's noticed she nudged Habor away and silently ordered her to complete the standard protocol in this situation. Run back to camp and gather part of the pack for if things go south. With Habor halfway out of sight and ear range Skipping Stone pivoted and glared over the horizon. Seeing a flash of fur she growled.
"Watch your step! This is Darkening Sky territory and we don't take kindly to loners… or groups of loners at that," Skipping snarled. Here eyes narrowed and cold, posture confident and frightening.

Snow turned quickly, his muscular body moving quicker than it looked he was capable of. His pack behind him growled and snarled, surrounding the 4 pups that traveled with them. Their fur bristled and their teeth dripped with saliva from immense hunger. Snow stood at the front of the pack, Golden Sun that Shines at his right.

Snow was tall and thick, his big body intimidating to most. He let out a huff before standing tall, though the rest of his pack didn't follow suit. "We aren't loners... We are a pack. The Pack of Changing Seasons." He spat, his aggressive personality doing a little too much of the talking. As the sun began to set, his white and black fur made him stand out from the green and brown forest around him.

"Who are you...?" He asked, daring to take another step towards the wolf.

Skipping Stone eyed the wolves behind who she assumed to be the leader of this ''pack''. Could this small misfit of wolves even earn the title of pack? Skipping Stone didn't believe so. Shaking her head and flashing a menacing smile. Unaffected by the larger male wolf in front of her. If he wanted to be snarky when his pack was close enough to trespassing in Darkening Sky territory then Skipping Stone would flaunt her own power, wisdom, anger.

"Skipping Stone…" watching the wolf take a step towards her Skipping Stone keened her ears back. Listening for the enviable paw-steps of her own pack. "And who are you? I would guess the leader of your…misfit gang yes??" voiced laced with malice Skipping Stone's smile grew wider. This pack was far to small, weak, to be a threat. "Listen, The Darkening Sky pack holds most territory in this forest you seem eager to enter. I don't know you purpose here but if it's to snatch up some free territory…well, I'd like to see you try."

"Misfit gang... You've got one hell of an ego, that's for sure." Snow said, his eyebrows furrowed. He was frustrated by her, not only by her ego, but her looks. She looked so similar to Darkest Night it made him worry. If it came down to it, would he be able to fight her?
Snow could hear the approaching group, their numbers already towering over his pack. "I am the alpha." He answered, holding his head high against her malice. The wind grew stronger, coming from behind Skipping Stone. A storm was bound from the north, and it wasn't going to be a small storm. He began to hear murmuring behind him. One of the pups was so exhausted they had trouble staying up, so their mother began to worry. She forced her way through the group and up to Snow. They talked quietly before Snow looked back at Skipping Stone.
"Look, I understand this is your territory, and I respect that, but I have pups who desperately need food and shelter. Just one night, then we can work this out in the morning." He said. Though what he said was similar to begging, his voice gave no hint of pleading or asking, rather a statement that needed to be said.

Ego? Oh, Skipping Stone didn't like that comment. "Now…" Skipping Stone dwelled on the word. Letting out a low grumble as she sensed her pack getting close. Ordering them to stay back and hide for the time being in the most discreet way possible. "Why would I let you stay in my territory no less my camp if that is what your implying," creeping forward Skipping lowered her neck. Craning her head upwards to glare at the other leader. "Why would I show my pack that weakness, weakness that your pack is filled with, is tolerated? You clearly don't know how my pack works," sliding back to a respectable position Skipping continued. "I don't appreciate the weak and I'm certainly not a charity service. Allowing you in my territory for a night… simply would show my packs younger generation that weakness in our pack is tolerated. Which it is not!" Skipping Stone spat the last word almost leaping at the other leader before withdrawing.

"If you wish for me to even consider aiding your pack you'll need to complete a trial, maybe series of them since you have a whole pack. Or at least… you'd have to win a battle with me," The thought of a full-moon battle with fresh blood excited Skipping Stone. She had yet to be beaten during the trial by any of her pack mates and therefore hadn't earned a single scar.
"Since you and you pack are soo… weak and seemingly worn. I'll let you stay in my camp, eat our food, if you simply pin down one of my swiftest." Skipping Stone took a moment to listen to her surroundings. Sure enough her pack had gathered around as they were told. Hiding in the shadows. She sniffed the air and recognized Evening's scent. She expected him to be brought along as an established hunter and fast runner.
"Evening!" Skipping Stone howled the wolves name and he immediately leapt out from the bushes. Shaking out his grey, white, and brown highlighted pelt.

"Yes Stone Skipping?" Evening bowed his head as he uttered the customary response to being summoned. Going as far as to utter her name backwards to show the most respect.

"Well leader? A trial of catch-me-if-you-can? Or leaving your pack and pups in the cold. Your choice."

"I don't tolerate weakness either, but not all of us start at the top. It's a long journey to get there, as I'm sure you already know. That journey takes longer for same than others." Snow added, angered that she thought he let his pack be like this. While he thought, he signaled Golden to his Side.
"Protect them while I am gone." He ordered. Golden nodded and returned to the group.
"I am ready for any trial you give me, but before I agree. What are the rules of this chase? I should at least now the rules since I'm playing the game." He said, the thought of fighting against her making his blood boil. The wolves behind him now settled down, laying down on the cold ground, wrapped around their vulnerable pups.

"Sure, whatever you say," Skipping Stone waved the other leader off. Happily moving on the rules of her trial. "This game is simple, Evening will dash about the area, avoiding your grasp and your goal is leap on him and hold him to the ground until submissive. Only a couple second really. Evening will to not run away simply hop about and you will not bite. I may allow an accidentally rake of your claws," Pausing Skipping demonstrated by gliding her paw over Evening's shoulder. Her claws barely grazing the flesh under his fur. Evening silently winced from the pressure but no blood was drawn.

Demonstration out the way Skipping Stone tilted her head to think of anything else she should say before they began. "Oh and you only have until the sun slips below that tree," pointing with her tail to a tall oak tree she added," you better begin."
Sliding back Skipping Stone gave Evening the space he needed to preform in this trial. A smile was on the leaders face as she got ready to watch the show.

"Okay... Let's get started." He said, digging his long claws into the ground, ready to begin. His fur stood on edge and his tail lashed behind him, picking up dead leaves from the ground.

Golden moved the pack back, leaving plenty of room for the trial. He hoped his mentor could complete this trial, or the pups might die. The wolves whispered amongst themselves, scared for Snow and for themselves.

From where the tree was, Snow had about 30 minutes to catch his prey. He took a deep breath and readied his legs.
