How do you find them? Do you need to live in a certain biome and explore in that biome? Is it just pure chance? Are certain recipes in certain places?

It depends on the recipes.

The easiest to find are the ones you get by giving an acorn to the possum in its explore encounter (you can get that encounter in a lot of biomes, like deciduous forest or the grassland). If you give the possum an acorn you always get a recipe that can be made with acorns.

Other recipes are a bit less common. You can get some by foraging with your herbalist, by scouting, by fighting and you have a chance to get one on some encounters instead of other items (toys, cave items, etc...)
If you check the news posts that announced the introduction of new decors, it usually says in what kind of encounter/action you can get them.
