Lifespan Overview

Lifespan Overview

In Wolvden, wolves have a set lifespan. Their age determines what they're able to do in your pack, and each age milestone has its benefits. As they reach old age, wolves will pass away and give you the opportunity to continue your pack through multiple generations.

There are three major age categories that define what a wolf is capable of doing. Puppies are too young to help out with the pack work, but they can be trained by adult wolves so that they're able to contribute more in the future. Adolescents can't complete tasks on their own, but they can join adult wolves on apprenticeships to get them ready to take on a role. Finally, Adult wolves fill pack roles, provide materials, and keep the pack running.

Below is an overview of a wolf's lifespan including specific ages at which notable events happen.

FAQ GraphicWhy don't my puppies look like the ones in these pictures?

A: In order to unlock multiple stages of pup art, the newborn and young pup art, you must purchase it from the [Grove]. The add-on costs 50 GC and will be applied permanently to all of the puppies in your den, present and future. However, it is not applied to other packs. If the other player does not have pup stages purchased, their pups will still display only in the default pup art.

Puppies

Pup Basics

A wolf is considered a puppy from 0 years 0 months old until 0 years 5.5 months old. Between 0 years 6 months and 1 year old, they will be considered adolescents.

A pup will be under their mother's care for 6 days. 5 rollovers after being born, or after 6 total days under their mother's care, pups are weaned and no longer require their mother's specific care with survival. If you chase a wolf that is nursing puppies, they will take their puppies with them.

A wolf with a nursing puppy.

Rollover Penalties

While a wolf is nursing puppies, as well as while the pup is growing, it's important to remember to keep the wolves fully fed and entertained every rollover.

If a nursing mother's hunger and mood are less than 100%, the nursing puppies will suffer survival chance penalties, detailed below. After a puppy is weaned from their mother, they themselves must be fully fed and entertained lest they suffer survival chance penalties.

You should also keep a nursing mother free of illness until their pups are weaned. If the mother has a contagious illness, it is a guaranteed chance that the illness will be passed onto one of the nursing puppies every rollover until all the nursing puppies have it. You can learn about which illnesses are contagious in [this guide].

Survival changes

Pupsitting & Pup Survival

As soon as they are born, pups are given a survival chance. They cannot survive without some help! Wolves younger than 6 months old can be assigned pupsitters to help ensure greater chances of survival. This is not mandatory, but is highly recommended, especially for pups you care for. Pupsitters can guarantee that a pup will survive until adolescence.

A pup's chance of survival is clearly indicated by their Survival Chance, and it is a simple chance. A pup with 60% Survival Chance has a 60% chance they will live this rollover, and a 40% chance they will die. You can view a pup's survival chance on their page.

The only way to guarantee that a pup will survive is to make sure they have 100% survival chance. Any survival chance lower than 100% still provides an opportunity for the pup to pass on rollover.

Survival chance bar
The location of the survival chance status bar.

A pup's initial survivability is dependent on a few factors. How many pups are in the litter, the mother's mood and hunger, as well as the parents' levels all contribute to initial survival chance. Higher level parents will provide higher survival chances.

Birth season also plays a large role in the survival chances a pup is born with. In the Winter, pups are born with significantly lower survival chances. In the Spring, pups are born with survival boosts. Summer and Autumn do not affect survival chances at birth.

WinterSpring
Winter and Spring icons.

On any given day, the only way to instantly increase a pup's survival chance is through the use of pupsitters. Over a few days, however, you can increase the pup's survival chance naturally by keeping the nursing mother, or the pup if the pup is weaned, fully fed and entertained. If a pup is nursing and their mother is fully fed and entertained at rollover, the pup will receive a 7% boost to their Survival Chance. After the pup is weaned, they will receive a 7% survival chance if the pup themselves is fully fed and entertained at rollover. If the pup or the nursing mother is not fully fed and played with at rollover, the pup will instead suffer survival penalties.

Rollover Survival Boosts and Penalties
Hunger and MoodSurvival Effect
100% Hunger and 100% mood+7% survival chance
100% Hunger and less than 100% moodNo survival change
Less than 100% Hunger and 100% mood-8% survival chance
Less than 100% Hunger and less than 100% mood-15% survival chance

Pups can also obtain a small survival boost from completing [pup training], however this is something they can only do once per day.

Pupsitters
Any adult wolf can be made a pupsitter by selecting the role on the wolf's settings. There is no limit to the amount of pupsitters one pack can have.

Pupsitter Icon
Pupsitter icon.

To have a wolf protect a puppy, assign them as a pupsitter and then go to the pupsitter tab on their page. Once there, you can click Assign Puppies to move to the pupsitting menu.

Assign puppies
Assigning puppies on a pupsitter's page.

The pupsitting menu provides a detailed overview of the pupsitter you have selected, as well as the pups they are currently protecting and any unprotected puppies currently in your pack. You can select which unprotected puppies you'd like the pupsitter to protect, or remove puppies from their protection. One pupsitter is able to protect 10 puppies at a time. The fewer puppies they protect, however, the more survival chance boost they will give to each puppy. This page is also where a pupsitter can train an adolescent if you have any available.

Pupsitting menu
The pupsitting menu.

Pupsitters have a base 60% protection they are able to offer to puppies. As their proficiency increases, the amount of protection they can provide also increases. For every 25 proficiency points, the pupsitter will gain an additional 10% possible protection. This means a pupsitter at 100 proficiency will have 100% protection to provide.

The total protection is split evenly between all puppies being protected by one pupsitter. So, if the pupsitter has 60% protection and is protecting 6 puppies, each puppy will receive a 10% survival chance boost from the pupsitter.

Wolves who are actively protecting puppies will gain 5 proficiency points every rollover as well as a small amount of EXP. Every rollover they are not actively protecting puppies, they will lose 1 proficiency point until they are completely out. Even if you change a wolf's role, they will still maintain their previous pupsitter proficiency. So, if you switch a pupsitter with 75% proficiency into the hunter role, and then switch them back to pupsitter, they will still have proficiency in pupsitting, though they will have lost some proficiency depending on how many rollovers they were not protecting puppies. Pupsitting proficiency losses are listed in your Daily Rollover Summary.

Proficiency loss
Pupsitter proficiency loss in a rollover summary.

Pupsitting is hard work, and also has an effect on the wolf's energy! For every pup a wolf is protecting, they will lose 10% energy, and they will not be able to regain this energy until they are no longer pupsitting. Energy can be regenerated using Guarana, however. So, if a pupsitter is protecting 7 puppies, they will drop to 30% energy and this energy will not regain unless a Guarana is used.

Pup Death and Injury
The only way to guarantee that a pup will not die is to make sure that their survival chances are always at 100%. Any survival chance lower than 100%, even 99%, does not prevent deaths.

An important fact to note is that, during rollover, a pup's survival penalties are determined before death is rolled. If your pup is at 100% survival chance going into rollover, but they were not fully fed, they will have actually been at 92% survival (having suffered a -8% penalty from hunger), and they will still have a chance of dying that rollover. Pups also have a chance of dying at rollover if their pupsitter dies during that rollover, as they will no longer have the pupsitter protection. Inversely, a pup whose survival chance isn't 100% will be guaranteed to survive if the boosts they receive on a rollover will increase the survival chance to 100% on that rollover.

If a puppy dies on rollover, you will receive a notice of it in your Daily Rollover Summary, and the puppy will be sent to your dynasty. The death text in the death announcement is completely random flavour text.

Pup Death
Pup death notification in a rollover summary.

Puppies without full survival chances also have the chance of being injured on rollover. If a puppy gets injured, they will lose a little bit of HP and they may even contract illnesses. Injuries are a sign that a pup is not protected enough.

Pup Injury
Pup injury notification in a rollover summary.

Just like with adult wolves, pup can also die from lethal illnesses. One illness, however, is only lethal to puppies. If a pup contracts Pox, it will die the next rollover no matter what its survival chances were.

Runts & Largest Puppies
Depending on litter size, with larger litters having a higher probability, there is the chance of runts and largest pups being born. Upon birth, these pups will be named either "New Largest Puppy" or "New Runt Puppy". The largest puppy is usually the puppy with the highest stats and will be given a survival chance boost. The runt puppy will be the opposite, being the one with the lowest stats and given a survival chance penalty. Both largest puppies and runts will gain additional stats and survival chance just the same as any other wolf and their status will not affect them as they age.

Runt
A runt puppy.

The rates of runts/largest puppies appearing in a litter of a certain size are as follows:
  • 1-2 pup litter: 0% chance
  • 3 pup litter: 10% chance
  • 4 pup litter: 20% chance
  • 5 pup litter: 30% chance
  • 6 pup litter: 40% chance

Puppies

The Enclave

Enclave
Enclave Crossroads token.

[The Enclave] is a token in the crossroads where you can meet the NPC Lillemor (or Mother Bear).

There are three main functions of the Enclave, each pertaining to puppies!

Puppy Quests

Puppy Quest
The puppy quest menu.

Every day, up to three times a day, you can complete a puppy quest. In these quests, Lillemor will ask you to bring her a pup who fulfills a certain requirement such as having a particular base or marking.

The reward for completing one of these quests is 25 SC. This currency reward, however, is planned to be replaced later by a new currency unique to the Enclave and to be used in a shop which Lillemor will run. The estimated time of release for this new currency and shop is unknown.

Since you can turn in three puppy quests every day, the Enclave provides the potential for 75 SC in profit every day.

Each puppy quest gives you three different options of puppies you can bring to Lillemor. Regardless of the difficult of the quest or the rarity of the pup you turn in, the reward for completing the quest is always 25 SC. You only need to find one of the three puppies to complete the quest.

All puppies turned in for a puppy quest must be weaned, not an adolescent, not ill, not immortal, and not currently training. The puppy can be bred by anyone, meaning you can purchase puppies from other players in order to complete these quests. Despite what the notice says afterwards, as soon as a puppy is turned in for a puppy quest, they are wiped from the game and they will not show up for adoption in the Enclave.

Puppy Quest Result
A puppy quest result notification.

Leaving Puppies
In addition to being able to drop off puppies for quests, Lillemor will also let you leave any random puppy with her in exchange for a small amount of SC. You can leave any pup which you have personally bred yourself, who is not weaned, not an adolescent, not ill, not in a trade, not training, and not immortal. You can determine whether or not you bred a pup yourself by checking the top right of the wolf's page. You cannot leave any puppies with Lillemor which you have not bred.

Leaving pup
Leaving a pup at the Enclave.

The SC reward that Lillemor will give you for each pup is determined solely by the pup's stats. The more stats they have, the more SC you will be given. 200 stat pups will reward 2 SC, 300 stat pups will reward 3 SC, and so on.

The amount of puppies you can leave at the Enclave every rollover is determined by your territory size. More territory means more puppies you can leave each day. The amount of puppies you can leave is equal to 1/4 your territory size, rounded up. So, if you have 150 territory (150 adult slots), you would be able to leave 38 puppies at the Enclave every day.

Why does my wolf say it was bred by "Unknown", even though I bred them?

If the "Bred by" section of your wolf's page lists the breeder as "Unknown", despite you having bred them yourself, it's likely that you bred them before the tracker was implemented. The game started keeping track of who bred a wolf on May 10, 2021. Any wolf who was bred before this will have an Unknown breeder. You can check when a wolf was bred at the bottom right of their page, where it says "Wolf created on...".

Puppy Adoption

After you have unlocked Pair Bonding on your 30th rollover, you also unlock the ability to adopt puppies from the Enclave!

Adoption
Adoption information.

Puppies that are left at the Enclave by other players will have the chance to be adopted into another pack! After you leave a pup at the Enclave, they will appear to be adopted right after the next rollover -- they will not show up in the adoption center immediately.

Every player is shown the same puppies in the same order to be adopted from the Enclave. You are not able to adopt your own puppies.

Pups will only be available for adoption for one day before they are deleted from the game completely.

Pups that are adopted will retain all their information from their previous pack including their heritage, looks, stats, previous packs, and who bred them. Names, bios, and footnotes are erased. The puppies will come with 50% survival chance after adoption.

Adopting a pup.

The age of the puppy you adopt from the Enclave is dependent on what age they were left at the Enclave. They will be 1/2 month/1 rollover older than the age they were left at.

This means that, if you leave a pup at the Enclave when they are 5.5 months old, they will be 6 months the next rollover when they are available for adoption. Since wolves become adolescents at 6 months old and you can only adopt puppies from the Enclave, these pups will be wiped from the game without being given the opportunity to be adopted.

Exact details about adoptable pups is not available in the Enclave before you adopt the pup. You are not able to see what base and markings they have before you adopt them and must base your decision off of the preview headshot you are shown. You are however able to see the pup's age, sex, total stats, heritage, and personality.

The price of each pup is based on their total stats, with higher-stat pups being more expensive.

In order to adopt a puppy from the Enclave, you must have at least one pair bond in your pack. When selecting the puppy to adopt, you will select which pair bond will become the adoptive parents of the puppy. After adoption, the puppy will appear on the adoptive parents' heritage pages under a section titled Living Adopted Offspring. There is not a limit to how many puppies a pair bond can adopt in their lifetime, but they can only adopt one every day.

Finally, using the Enclave grants a large variety of achievements, all visible on your [Achievements] page.

Some of these achievements are Challenger achievements, meaning you cannot see the achievement until you have completed it. All challenger achievements related to the Enclave are visible under the spoiler below.

Adolescence

Wolves become adolescents at the age of 6 months. Just like puppies, they are not able to complete tasks or contribute significantly to the pack. The only thing your adolescents have to worry about is continuing their training. More information about adolescent apprenticeships is available further down in this guide!

While wolves are adolescents, they still take up pup slots in your territory. If you do not have enough adult wolf slots in your territory as soon as the adolescent ages into adulthood, the adolescent will leave your pack due to overcrowding. You will be given a warning on your den page before this happens. If an adolescent leaves your pack, you have three days to reclaim them at the bottom of your den page (for 100 SC each), after which the adolescent is deleted from the game. Adolescents running from your pack due to overcrowding will not join the chased wolf pool.

An adolescent overcrowding warning.

Adulthood

Wolves become adults at the age of 1 year. The will take up an adult territory slot and they can now contribute to your pack by completing roles. Currently, adult wolves can be hunters, scouts, herbalists, pupsitters, or mentors, or they could have no role at all. Adult wolves can be bred and have pups.

Pup Training and Apprenticeships

Pup Training and Apprenticeships

Pup Training

After rolling over five times, you can start training your puppies! Puppy training is accessed through the Puppy Training icon on the Crossroads. A unique quest also becomes available on your fifth rollover, as long as you have completed 'The Next Generation' quest, which will walk you through the training process. This quest is not required to start training puppies, but it does award a Guarana upon completion!

Pup Training Token
Pup Training Crossroads token.

In order to be eligible for training, a puppy must be weaned and younger than adolescence (at or between 2 1/2 months and 5 1/2 months).

Lessons

Puppy training is done via lessons which are taught by adult wolves in your pack. Puppies can participate in one lesson every day for a total of 7 lessons throughout the 7 rollovers that they are eligible to be trained.

Lessons are 1, 2, or 3 hours long, and the longer the lesson, the more stats are gained. Puppies do not gain the stats immediately, however. Instead, they gain these stats once they are adults, and their stat gains will be listed in your Daily Rollover Summary when they reach adulthood.

Stat Boosts
Training stats received by a wolf aging into adulthood.

Up to 4 puppies can join a single lesson. Any adult wolf in your pack can be the teacher as long as they fit the requirements for the lesson. Each lesson will take 20% energy per hour of the lesson. 1 hour lessons will take 20% energy, 2 hour lessons will take 40% energy, and 3 hour lessons will take 60% energy. This means the wolves participating in the lesson, including the teacher, must have at least that much energy to begin the lesson. Wolves cannot perform other tasks while training.

FAQ GraphicMy wolf matches the requirements for the lesson, why aren't they showing up in the menu?

A: A common issue players run into when setting up puppy training lessons is a lack of energy. If you are setting up a 3-hour lesson, the adult wolf must have at least 60% energy. They will not show up in the training menu if they do not have this much energy!

Each lesson affects a specific stat -- strength, speed, agility, wisdom, or smarts. The lesson will reward the puppy with a certain amount of the specific stat depending on how long the lesson is. A 1-hour lesson will give +3 stats, a 2 hour lesson will give +6, and a 3 hour lesson will give +9.

Lesson Length Base Stats Gained Energy Requirement Tutor Requirement Item Requirement
1 hour lesson 3 stats gained 20% Taught by any tutor No required item
2 hour lesson 6 stats gained 40% Taught by any tutor Item required
3 hour lesson 9 stats gained 60% Taught by wolf with specific role*, or a Mentor No required item
* 3 hour lessons require wolves with specific roles to complete. For example, some require Pupsitters while others require Scouts. If you would not like to use a wolf with one of these specific roles, you can use a Mentor instead!

The amount of stats that are given to the trained pups are heavily affected by the teacher's stats.

If the specific stat of the tutor isn't at least 50% more than the stat of the pup that's being trained, the pup will lose -1 stat boost per hour of the lesson. For example, if the puppy has 50 STR and the tutor does not have at least 75 STR, and they are teaching a three hour lesson, the puppy will only gain +6 STR instead of +9. Additionally, if the teacher's stat is the same as or even less than the pup's, the pup being trained will lose -2 stat boost per hour of the lesson, resulting in +1/+2/+3 rather than +3/+6/+9. Before choosing a tutor, make sure that their stats are high enough to negate these stat cuts!

If a puppy completes all three lessons within a specific stat, they will receive a bonus for that stat. Puppies can also gain occasional survival chance boosts for training.

Puppy Training Menu
The puppy training menu.

Grouse Tip!

Wondering how to maximize the amount of stats your pup gets from training?

The maximum amount of stats a puppy can receive from training is 63. This can only be achieved if the teacher has at least 50% more of each stat being trained than the puppy does. There are two options you can choose from when deciding which lessons to start.

A puppy could complete all 3-hour lessons for each stat (+45), plus the 1- and 2-hour lessons for one of the stats (hence getting the bonus for that stat and receiving +18). Alternatively, you could complete all of the lessons for two stats (hence getting the bonuses for those stats and receiving +54), as well as one other 3-hour lesson (+9). If you want to train your pup for a specific role rather than general stat increase, the latter option may be a better choice for you.

Mentors

Wolves can be given the Mentor role after they are at least 5 years old, and at least level 5. Mentors can conduct any lesson regardless of role requirements. Mentors do not have a role cooldown, meaning you can switch a mentor out of the role, and then back into it, as many times per day as you would like.

Mentor
Mentor icon.

Unlike other roles, mentors do not gain proficiency, but they (as well as any other wolf conducting lessons) get EXP for training puppies. The amount of puppies they train at one time does not matter -- they will always get the same amount of EXP regardless of how many puppies they are training. The amount of EXP gained seems to be random but falls within a range based on how long the lesson is. Wolves teaching lessons may also gain two stats a day in the stats that they are training, as long as they haven't gained stats from other tasks that day.

Adolescent Apprenticeships

After your 12th rollover, you can start adolescent apprenticeships! There is not a central page for apprenticeships. Instead, you will find the option on all the normal pages for adult wolf roles, such as the hunting and herbalism pages. A new unique quest becomes available on your 12th rollover that helps explain the process of adolescent apprenticeships, but it is not required. It awards 100 SC upon completion.

Upon aging into adolescence, wolves are given the Apprentice role, which means they can start training for roles they may take on in adulthood! On any page where you usually send out adult wolves on tasks, an option to "Includes Apprentices" will appear providing you have eligible apprentices. In order for an apprentice to be eligible to follow along, they must not be ill, not in a trade, and not currently training or already trained. Apprentices can only train once per day.

Apprenticeship
Including an adolescent on a scouting mission.

Completing apprenticeships will help adolescents start gaining proficiency in adult roles. They can gain up to 20% proficiency in any role by following adult wolves along in their daily tasks. They will gain 3-5% proficiency for the role that they observe, and the training will take 15% energy from the adolescent. The adolescent also has a chance of gaining a stat point relating to the role.

Up to three apprentices can follow along a hunting party to gain proficiency in the Stalker, Chaser, and Finisher roles. One apprentice can follow a scout to gain scouting proficiency, and one apprentice can follow an herbalist to gain herbalism proficiency. An apprentice can also meet with a pupsitter to discuss techniques which will provide them with pupsitting proficiency. This can be done on the pupsitting menu page for any given pupsitter.
