WolfQuest AE: A remake of a game you forgot about, probably

if you were around during the golden age of adoptable browser sites, you probably have at least heard of WolfQuest. you might have even played it yourself.

originally a collaboration between the Minnesota Zoo and the educational game development studio Eduweb, the demo first dropped in 2007 as a free download. it periodically received updates until the release of 2.5 in 2011, when funding dried up and development ceased. then, three years later, Eduweb announced their plans to return to the game, bringing updated graphical fidelity, more coat options, plans for a third episode, and even an all-new map. following a successful proposal on Steam Greenlight, 2.7 was released on Steam, Android, and IOS in 2016. as fans, we considered this huge news, but as fans, were never prepared for the success that would come.

the new release didn't just secure funding for future development of 2.7, as we had hoped. in 2017, the announcement no one expected came: Wolfquest Anniversary Edition (also known as Wolfquest 3.0) was in development. it was a complete remaster of the original game in an updated engine. this meant updated graphics, updated and expanded maps, better mechanics an interactive environment, and a stunning level of detail in new gameplay.

the first episode of Wolfquest 3.0, Amethyst Mountain, came out on Steam Early Access and itch.io on July 25, 2019. ever since, it has received regular patches. episode two featuring pups, Slough Creek, came out in late 2020. a DLC including 15 new coats based on real-life Yellowstone wolves released in March 2021, providing additional funding for future development. for the first time in many, many years, the future of WolfQuest is bright again.

I remember playing WQ shortly after the demo was replaced. Good times. I have AE and love it. It’s fun to revisit old memories, but it does feel a bit awkward being in my 20s on MP where most players are still kids. It’d be cool to meet some other adults on there.
