Grant carcasses from Explore battles

Grant carcasses from Explore battles

It seems goofy to me that my main wolf can kill, say, a whitetail buck, yet there's no carcass afterwards. Did the prey evaporate?

I've occasionally seen Explore battles give meat hunks, and I suppose that also makes sense, but even so I'd like to see the amount of times this happens increase even if full carcasses aren't always awarded. I realize this game is supposed to be harder than Lioden, but if it's for the sake of realism, it's also realistic for a wolf to either take home spoils or summon the pack when they're lucky enough to kill something on their own.

Perhaps there could be a mechanic where the game takes into account how big the prey is and how far away from the pack's home territory the lead wolf is exploring. It kind of makes sense that they wouldn't be able to drag a whole deer or boar from some far-off biome, but if it's in the home biome or maybe even one of the biomes surrounding it, I'd think the pack could be summoned to a kill. On the other hand, if the lead wolf killed a bobcat, you'd think they would be able to bring the whole thing home for the rest of the pack.

This does run into uncomfortable territory when we fight other wolves in Explore. Again, though, cannibalism is not unheard of with real wolves, especially during hard times like winter. It could be discouraged by being prone to spreading diseases, perhaps, or the flavour text for wolf-on-wolf fights could be changed to say the loser gets away with the last of their strength. And if players are really squicked by their pack nomming on wolf carcasses, or if that's prone to spreading disease, there's always selling them to the raccoon.

tl;dr make carcasses an automatic or common reward from Explore battles.

NGL this would be supremely useful. If I take on a moose, I'd expect to get something for it other than XP. Support!

Regarding the 'uncomfortable territory': with predator battles where you fight other wolves, big cats, etc, it could be that the enemy was in possession of a prey carcass, but you steal it from them post-fight. e.g. fight a wolf, you get to take away the whitetail carcass they were feeding on, winning you one Whitetail Carcass from the fight, perhaps with reduced uses.

To reduce confusion this would have to be clarified in the battle dialog, e.g. "Too weakened to defend itself, the Timber Wolf watches as you snatch away the prey it had possessed. You got 1 Whitetail Carcass!" Or something more concise.

Edit because I forgot to add my own sentiment: I'm personally ambiguous to this suggestion, it would be a great additional incentive to battling but I wouldn't want it to overshadow the purpose of hunting, hence why I also suggested slightly reduced uses for some battle-won carcasses.

Getting carcasses with fewer uses would be a good balancing mechanic in general, and stealing food from other predators would work well, especially from other wolves.

Perhaps carcassess with fewer uses could also reflect how far away the lead wolf was exploring from the pack's home territory. Something like, "You bring the kill back to the den, but it's so far away you only manage to take a leg/you lose part of the carcass to scavengers while you're resting/etc."

After playing a bit more, I think I've changed my mind a little re:nerfing carcasses gained from battle.

It's very, very silly how giving an acorn to a prairie chicken can get me an entire bison carcass but actually beating a bison two levels above me gets... maybe a meat chunk, 2-4% on the EXP gauge, and a handful of pinecones.

As it stands the battle system needs work in general to be less random, but better rewards for harder fights would be good, and I think carcasses would make sense on a lore/realism basis.

Support!! Would also be useful for quests. SO frustrating to need a pronghorn carcass and see a pronghorn herd in explore.

Support. more consistent reward drops would be a great incentive to keep battling, as tons of players just give up on it once they reach certain levels since the payout sucks

as for the predators- could just code in different items? like killing prey animals grants you prey carcasses semi-consistantly, maybe predators drop healing items/currency/etc more rather than food? that way you can benefit from targeting certain fights too

i could see this being useful - if there's too much potential for oversaturating the food market, you could even do what is coded for the bone reward in the slots, which is to award the carcass but have less than full uses.
