New Player FAQ in the "Help" / Tala's Archive

New Player FAQ in the "Help" / Tala's Archive
Posted 2020-11-07 15:54:55

Hi devs - the Help section / Tala's Archive is great but there are still a lot of frequently asked questions I see popping up in the help chat from new members. I think it would be really great if some of these were compiled in the Help section.

Some common q's I see coming up repeatedly that aren't answered in Tala's Archive:

- can nested wolves pupsit? (this is especially confusing to new players since nested hunters and scouts can't fulfill their roles, so it doesn't logically follow that pupsitters will be able to protect pups even when nested)

- do I have to nest my pregnant wolf right away or can I wait?

- how do I change my avatar? (this is a double whammy because folks often don't know what the "image url" is in reference too, since its not clear to new users that the site isn't hosting their avatar image, so even when new people DO find the account settings they're unsure of where to actually change their avatar photo)

- is there any way to gain territory other than buying with SC and later GC?

- can I reassign pups to a newpupsitter right away or do I have to wait? (I suspect this is mostly people coming from Lioden where shuffling kits around was risky since they'd go a day without protecting, but it isn't clear until after you've taken that leap)

- what does burying do?

- how do I regain HP?

- why can't I trade my wolf? (most new folks don't know that you can't put a wolf assigned to a role up for trade, and don't know that you can't trade away pups until they're weaned)

I know that a lot of these q's can be answered with visiting the grouse house or the wiki or browsing the forums, but I remember being frustrated that Tala's Archive answered some of my newbie questions but missed a lot of others, before I had even heard of the grouse house OR visited the wiki.

If folks have more questions they see a LOT that don't have a clear "go look here" answer, please add on!

This would require adding a new sub-page to the Help section and writing up common qs.

Thanks for your time and consideration!

100000% support

+ if this is implemented, there could be some kind of masterpost where users can suggest new FAQ questions.

Support!

I was honestly rather surprised by how bare bones and at time vague Tala's Archive is. It's far less thorough than I was expecting it to be. It could definitely use an FAQ or some section that goes a bit more in depth on things people likely will have questions for.

Support! the FAQ and help guides are wildly unhelpful, and it would save a TON of time. a lot of people don't think to check in the forums for user guides, and reaching out to chat is just redundant since people ask the same questions almost every single day lol

Huge support! Some additional FAQs I've seen from camping out in the help chat

  •  At what age to wolves die?
  • When do stud slots reset?
  • At what age to pups become adols / adults?
  • What / when is rollover? (I think the whole rollover mechanic could do with an in-depth explanation, honestly; I don't think it's obvious to people at first that your account won't roll over if you don't log in that day)
  • Where can I find xyz enemy / quest item / herb? (The answer to this can just link to the various guides and spreadsheets)
  • How many scouts / herbalists / hunters / pupsitters can I have?
  • How do I remove my breeding male without retiring him? (This is quite counter-intuitive I think)
  • How long are seasons / when will they change? (The cooldowns page is often missed)
  • What bases / markings / etc are in the base changer / marking applicator / etc.?
  • Can I safely leave pups without a pupsitter if their innate survival is 100%?

I support!

I think also a "what happens when my lead wolf dies/how does a lead wolf change work?" would be good, too.

@Katie You do not! You need to have them nested before they give birth, so waiting increases the likelihood you may forget, but they won't suffer any ill effects on their pregnancy from being unnested before that.
