Foragers and other new roles

Foragers and other new roles

Hey devs!

I absolutely love the idea of roles- like. They’re easily my favorite part of the game. So I figured, well, there are things that would probably be rather useful roles! Now I believe I’ve seen a similar version of one of these suggested, however I do feel like what I suggest is different enough to warrant being here. Of course some of these roles would need certain mechanics entered into the game, but I think it could be fun to have them.

First up, we have what started this- Foragers. Foragers/Gathers would be probably be the ones that are least useful. My suggestion for them would be some mix between rescouting and foraging, but with a bit added. The idea is that these wolves would be sent out to look for things in your home biome. They’d come back with things like very small prey (quails, hares, things like that), possibly some herbs, and possibly some den building supplies. Like the hunters, this would have a limit since it is similar to just exploring. Maybe 3 per day with a max of 3 Foragers? I think this would be a role that depended on wisdom and agility.

Now we get into those who would be introduced if a new game mechanic was introduced.

To start, we have the Patrollers. Now, why would we even need them? We don’t have anything to use them for. However, I think that should change. This whole idea came from the fact that we can find other wolf packs in our home biome. This, in my opinion, shouldn’t be possible. Our home biomes are our territory! So, in order to keep rival npc wolf packs and certain predators out, we should have wolves patrol and mark our territories. Now, I know that they still sound useless, but hear me out.

This game seems to want to have more focus on realism than lioden, which is perfectly fine. However, one thing that kind of strikes me as odd is the fact that even with a bajillion other predators in our biome/territory, prey is still fairly plentiful. I believe that there should be some form of penalty for allowing other predators to be on our land. Perhaps if the territory isn’t patrolled, the chances of catching prey drop. In real life, if an area was full to the brim with predators, the prey population would be low and I think having that represented here would be cool.

Additionally, these patrols that are sent out could potentially bring back news like “x told you that they spotted a herd of y near z” or “x told you they found traces of y predator around z”. These could potentially correspond to quests as well, slightly boosting your chance of finding the needed predator/pray. This would probably focus on strength and intelligence.

Next is another somewhat related role- Guardians. Now I saw someone mention them in regards to PVP, but I think they could serve another function- protecting pup sitters. Pups are easy prey, and a large amount of them would no doubt attract some... unsavory guests. With these predators coming in for a snack, your pupsitters would end up needing to fight. Well, fights can lead to serious injuries for the predator, the pupsitters, and the pups. Thus, without anything, pupsitters could get attacked and killed. A few guards who are focused on defending the pupsitters could completely eliminate that risk.

Of course, these are a few of my more underdeveloped ideas, but I like them.

Oh, and we could also have Apprentices who shadow certain roles and get a small stat boost one that is put in said role.

I am only not supporting because the roles you are proposing feel redundant or are already suggested.

Your Foragers are already fulfilled by scouts, herbalist, and lead exploration. I really don't want or need anymore den items or small carcasses as they're so easy to come by. Also, the only one that wants them is the racoon because everyone else (except the newest players) already have these high "drop rate" items.

Your Patrollers and Guardians already sound a lot like the Sentinel and Guardian roles that are already being suggested. Maybe add your specialization or tweak ideas to their threads?

As you also know, apprenticeship is also being discussed in the Suggestion Boards.

Personally I feel like the Guardians and Patrollers I suggested are quite different (considering that the Sentenials are really suggested for PvP and backing you up in battle where as mine are more based around npcs) but I can add them there.

As for foragers, I said it could be redundant already, though I still think they could be useful.

I also didn’t realize apprenticeship was being suggested.

That's cool. I just don't feel they are unique enough from the others but that doesn't mean anything. Just my opinion! Others may disagree with me and that is totally cool as far as I'm concerned.

I just didn't want to not support without explaining myself.

Good luck with your ideas!

Oh no, I understand your explanation and I do appreciate it! I just feel like more roles would make this game even more interesting so I decided to explain the ones I could think of.

this post old now BUT i really like your take on guardians/patrollers. other suggestions for similar roles seem to have the guardians directly contributing to the pup's survival bar by some amount, which i don't really like since it seems a bit redundant. extra risk to the PUPSITTERS instead of directly to the pups is very interesting.

i do think a lot of these role suggestions that are combat oriented (your guardians and patrollers, the sentinels and pvp/battle buddy roles that have been suggested by other people, etc) could be sort of condensed into a single guardian/warrior role, but if everyone's suggestions are taken into account i suppose it could become a bit overtooled.

of course i don't really think the devs would add EVERYTHING everyone has suggested, but i do hope pvp stuff and other things that reflect how violent wolf packs are towards each other irl get added (if i remember right a SIGNIFICANT portion of wolf mortality in the wild comes as a result of conflict with other wolves)

I like the idea of the guard role increasing hunting sucess within your home biome. Maybe EXP gain from going to other bioms to fight train, but none of the rewards of defending the home territory.
