When and Where does Wolvden Exist?

It takes place in America!

place evidence :

wolvden.tumblr.com themselves saying it happens in the Americas (thanks to  🕊🦋 Nelthyen 🦋🕊 for letting us know and thanks to  neanderthal for finding the link)

backgrounds are from the Americas

species encountered are native to the Americas

It probably takes place post 2013!

Time evidence:

2013: black footed ferrets were reintroduced!  (thanks to  AdmYrrek)

1997-1999: black footed ferrets were basically wiped out in 1999

1997: black footed ferrets were reintroduced (thanks to  AdmYrrek)

1973-1979: black footed ferrets were declared extinct in 1979

1973: In the raccoon wares for a few habitats you can see some human items, including a plastic bottle. Plastic bottles were patented in 1973 (thanks to  neanderthal

1908: Ozark national forest was created by Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, and it is available as a background (thanks to Eternal Destiny)

1870s: Grain silo is visible in available backgrounds, they weren't invented until the 1870s (thanks to 🍁 KoiWolf 🍁)

16th century: Mustangs are present in game, and they didn't come to the Americas until the 16th century

Any further evidence is appreciated!

original post (feel free to ignore):

I believe Wolvden is in the Americas. This is primarily based on the backgrounds available in the wardrobe, as it list real places in the the Americas, and only in the Americas. This goes off wildlife largely as well. Turkey? Those only exist in north america. Same goes for possums, and many many other animals. I haven't gone through every encounter and prey item to be able to say that every animal is native to the Americas, but it certainly seems like most are. Please feel free to correct me! This is a working theory, the more input the better.

The when is trickier. I am going to say we're in the sixteen century. This is due to two reasons, one in the available backgrounds you can chose an abandoned mineshaft or a cabin. The more convincing to me is that mustangs exist in-game. If we can assume that we are in the Americas, it has to be after the Spanish brought their horses with them. Since they don't exist there naturally, we have to assume it is after they were introduced.

To narrow down the time period further, in the [USA] Illinois - Farmlands background (pictured below) is a grain silo. And the first modern wooden grain silo was constructed in 1873.

Hmm. This is interesting! I really honestly do think WD takes place in the Americas. Something I found out after reading this topic, I decided to look up about this background from my homestate, you know, cause why not: [USA] Ozark National Forest

It's one of the well-known places of attraction/tourism here in Arkansas and this background represents it well. Something I didn't know though is it was established March 6th, 1908 by Theodore Roosevelt from a presidential proclamation (read here).

So, if WD is really in Americas, it might be in a time period from 1908 to ...? 😯👀

However, just now thinking about it, they do have backgrounds from Canada. So, it could be debatable on exactly where in the Americas. It could be the whole Americas continent (North, South, Central) - which I could totally see it.

I'm gonna follow this topic in hopes we can possibly figure it out. I'm intrigued.

Well, the fact that it is based in the Americas (North America, specifically) was confirmed awhile ago on WD's Tumblr page, I believe. : )

its definitely not the sixteenth century. its actually modern day.

if you look at some of the raccoon wares in certain biomes, the raccoon is pictured with little human trinkets. especially the grassland biome displays this very well. the raccoon has things like flip-flops and pencils and plastic water bottles.according to a quick search, plastic bottles were invented around 1970. so at the very oldest, the time period is early 70s.

also @nihilo yes the devs did confirm that wolvden is based in the americas. here is a post where they said so, but i think there might be more than one

if anyone has more evidence to narrow down more specific time, i'd be interested

The fact there are black-footed ferrets out in the prairie is potentially indicative of the time, arguing for modern day (as in, the past decade, if not right now). They were almost extinct in the wild and breeding, training (to hunt, catch, and kill prairie dogs), and release efforts have only recently started bearing fruit in terms of self-sufficient populations in the wild.

awesome insight @AdmYrrek!

after a bit of research, black footed ferrets were declared extinct in 1979 and were introduced in 1997 but in 1999 they were almost wiped out by a plague and then they were re-introduced 2013-2014

right now there are approximately 370 in the wild

which means, either wolvden is set between 1973 and 1979 OR (more likely) some time post 2014 (though it could be post 1997 but there aren't a whole lot then)
