Hallow glides over the rock on silent paws, nary a pebble left disturbed in its path. Out here, there is no shelter from the relentless downpour that has plagued the pack for weeks but it's certainly better than huddling under the cover of the trees where the mud and filth coats one's fur and clogs one's senses. There is no sign of the hare it had been tracking. The unforgiving rain drums a steady beat against Hallow's pelt as it turns to the rest of the party.

Their thick fur, slick with water, is plastered against their bodies. It only serves to show how haggard they look. The five exchange silent glances, their unspoken disappointment and a creeping hopelessness evident in the way they carry themselves. As one, they turn and carefully retrace their steps, slowly making their way back to the rest of the pack. The rain has wiped clean any and all scents and fog wreathes around their tired forms. To get lost now would almost certainly be fatal.

Alita huffed, listening to the howling rain outside. "There's nothing for me to do."

The downpour had pounded down on them for weeks, now. Alita wasn't even sure if any other packs had survived the initial river flood, let alone re-established far enough that the water hadn't reached them by now. She found herself worrying about anyone she had met from her time in other packs, even if she hated to admit that she even cared about anyone in this pack. But worst of all, she and Nymph were stuck, crowded into a den with the hunters with nothing to occupy themselves with. A scout was only useful so long as they could find their way back, and when the rain washed away all scent trails, that rendered them completely unable to help. They couldn't keep the pack alive like the hunters or Soprano, they couldn't safeguard the pups like the pupsitters, and neither had any real commanding power in the pack, unlike Fio or even the unofficial number two, Gradient. They were just pathetic, and waiting to die.

She had asked, many times: was there something she could do? But she was too aggressive to stay with pups, too solitary to work with a group, and hunting alone never yielded results. "I'll have to sit and wait. But I hate waiting." And yet, it was all she could do.

Gradient was panicking. This wasn't supposed to happen, he had told himself. I need to keep calm in front of the pack. And so, after his packmates— his hunting party— his friends— his sister— disappeared, he took charge of the pack, divvying up orders, keeping Cyan and Lune in line as they remained blissfully oblivious to the panic of the pack, and sending out hunting parties. All he could do was pray that every hunting party came back whole and sound. This is out of my paws now. But when he saw a once-whole hunting party reduced to two, his heart sank to his toes.

Insight followed her brother into the undergrowth. Julia had caught the barest whiff of a scent, too little to make out what it was, but even the smallest hint of a scent gave them hope. Feather and Seed flanked the two of them, where Julia remained in the front, following the scent as closely as she could. "Weird, it's looping in circles…" the speckled gray wolf muttered.

"Any traces?" Feather called, her voice tinged with desperation. Their stores were running out; they needed this prey, no matter how small it was.

"Ah— yes. Feather, Sundown, you'll want to head in that direction; Sundown, go from behind to chase it towards us. Seed, loop around the other way to pincer it. Insight, stay here with me." Julia's quick, decisive commands soothed the minds of the chasers, though Insight had a sinking feeling in her heart that something was about to go wrong.

"Are you sure we should split up?" the dark red wolf asked, her paws shifting. "Gradient told us to stick together…"

"There's no other way," Julia replied grimly.

There was a pregnant pause between the two, broken suddenly by loud howling. Was it in pain, or fear, or anger? Could it be possible that…?

"That's Sundown! BROTHER! SEED! FEATHER!" Insight bolted out of the bush, followed closely by Julia. But as Julia slid to a stop, in the clearing where the scent trail disappeared, there was no wolf to be seen; no blood, no scent, no traces.

Insight collapsed to the ground then, tears welling in her eyes. Julia could only nudge her back onto her paws, watching helplessly as she sobbed over the loss of her dear brother on their way back to camp.

Hallow's ears prick as it registers the distant sound of voices. It had paused for only a second at a scent it thought it had caught when it suddenly found itself alone. It howled to call to the other members of its hunting party but they didn't sound familiar. It had to be worth meeting them, at least. The rain seems to grow quiet as it takes a step and appears before two wolves, one reddish brown and one gray. It watches as their expressions change from shock and perhaps a hint of fear to open hostility. Hallow simply watches and gives a single wag of its tail, attempting to be friendly.

Insight glared at the suspicious wolf. Or was it really a wolf? It looked about to melt into the shadows at any moment; could this be what took my brother and friends? She and Julia exchanged a glance, then ran into the woods together. It's too close to the camp… we need to get it away!

Hallow jerks back sharply as the wolves bolt, although the movement more resembled a twitch or a lurch. Well then. Its claws click against the stone as it paces in a small circle (unusual for it to make a sound, something to be pondered later). After a second of consideration, it lets loose another long howl. The sound tears through the air but there are no birds around to send flying. It's boring to just wait around, though so it takes off at a full sprint after reddish brown and gray to see if it can find them again.

For a while, the two felt a flash of relief as the thing did not continue its pursuit. But that didn't last. It's still chasing after us?! Insight's initial levelheadedness melted into anger. "Julia! Head back to camp!" she howled angrily. "I'll fight it myself."

Julia suddenly appeared uncertain. "Are you sure?" she asked the younger wolf. "It might be different from the one that took your brother and the others."

"It's still a threat," Insight declared, turning and baring her teeth at the monstrosity.

"But it could be with another pack," Julia pressed. "Its mannerisms are completely different. The one that took our teammates was cunning and manipulative; it hooked us onto its scent and we didn't realize it was hunting us until we were too late. This is too obvious."

"Don't try to stop me." Insight lunged at the wolf following them.

Hallow forces its weight onto its front paws and throws its body into a hard torque, narrowly slipping by reddish brown's snapping teeth. It feels her fangs clip it in the cheek, although thankfully the wound is superficial (it's unfortunate, but it is only mortal). It seems to be a case of mistaken identity with these two, and its assailant doesn't look too interested in talking it out (not that it will talk anyways, it thinks with a twinge of amusement). Now it's clear to it that the wolves aren't friendly, but these are the first wolves not of its pack that it's encountered and Hallow is more willing to take its chances with gray. It can't let her get away now. Empty white eyes turn towards the cliffs, searching for her, as Hallow spins itself back around and bolts after where it thinks she's gone.

"Stay away from her!" Insight growled, slamming herself onto its back. It is hostile!

Insight… Julia's heart pounded in her ears as she turned back to see the two tussling. She knew that this conflict would waste resources, for both its pack and theirs, if it dragged on for too long. So now, she had to make her decision. "Stop, Insight. Get off." She stepped out from beneath the trees, shivering from the dampness of the bushes she trod over on her sensitive paws.

Insight paused. "But—"

"There's no point in antagonizing a wolf from another pack. Especially now, when we're all suffering from this crisis." Julia padded closer to the other wolf. "Hello. I'm Julia, and that's Insight. Do you have a name?"
